John Dewey's concept of reconstruction is comparable as a vision of human possibility to the notion of self-overcoming in the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche. If atomistic individualism is rejected, then Dewey's democratic approach can be seen as an improvement over Nietzsche's aristocratic conception. If, as Dewey suggests, the boundaries between the individual and society are fluid, then a Nietzschean cultural physician must accept Dewey's democratic idea of reconstruction.
