Independent pet retailers are facing increasingly stiff competition from large pet superstore chains and discounters which have begun to appear in many metropolitan areas. In many instances, small pet shops were simply overwhelmed by the low prices and massive marketing efforts of their larger competitors. However, small pet retail operators can fight back by providing something the big superstores cannot: personalized customer service. The impact of the large chains on the pet industry cannot be ignored, but independent retailers can also successfully compete.
