In today's world where information is a valuable and vital resource, Information Management emerges as a fundamental discipline to deal with the growing volume of data and transform it into strategic knowledge. This article seeks to present the development of Information Management from the emergence of Information Science and its subareas and its contribution to the management of organizations. Thus, the work unfolds into four main sections: (1) discussion of the framework of the emergence of Information Science and its main milestones over the years; (2) different concepts and characteristics of IC and the emergence of different branched subareas of IC; (3) presentation of the definitions and characteristics of the Information Management subarea; (4) exposition of the various advantages resulting from the application of Information Management in organizations. From the research it was possible to identify that the main advantages arising from information management contribute especially to a better understanding of the different organizational areas and help in decision making.
