The purpose of this paper is to evaluate carbon spheres as a green lubricant additive in 5W30 engine oil to reduce friction and wear. Carbon spheres with a diameter of ∼400 nm are synthesized from glucose by using a hydrothermal process. Lubrication is studied using a ball-on-disk tribometer by measuring the friction coefficient and wear in the boundary lubrication regimes. The worn surfaces were analyzed by Raman spectroscopy. Carbon spheres are found to be stably dispersed at 0.5 wt% concentration in base oil. The experiments revealed that carbon spheres are effective in reducing both friction and wear when lubricating by using base oil. Raman results show that the enhanced tribological performance is owing to a carbon-rich boundary film, the formation of which is attributed to the deposit of carbon particles during the sliding process. The potassium borate nanoparticles (nPB) as lubricant additive were prepared with an eco-friendly method. The tribological properties of nPB and ZDDP as lubricant additives in polyalphaolefin (PAO) were systematically evaluated using a four-ball tribometer and a SRV fretting friction and wear tester, which suggested that nPB exhibited excellent extreme pressure capacity, and better anti-wear and friction-reducing properties than ZDDP. Results of surface analyses show that the good lubricating properties and excellent load-carrying capacity of nPB in PAO are ascribed to the boundary protecting films, which were composed of some easy-shearing compounds: B2O3, FexBy and Fe2O3. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of nano hexagonal boron nitride(hBN) particles on the friction and wear properties of AISI 4140 steel material when the hBN particles are used as an oil additive. Nano hexagonal boron nitride powders, which were produced using a special process, were dispersed in engine oil (SAE10 W) to enhance lubrication. The amount of nano hexagonal boron nitride in the engine oil was varied from 0 to 10% by volume, and four different lubricant samples were prepared. Wear tests were conducted using ball-on-disc geometry. The worn surfaces of substrates were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The experiments showed that the nano hexagonal boron nitride particles that were used as an oil additive affected the friction and wear behavior. A 14.4% improvement in the friction coefficient and a 65% decrease in the wear rate were achieved through the use of the nano hBN as an oil additive. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
