A database for the 'History of the Book in Britain,' volume III, was designed to track the private ownership of printed books in Britain from 1450-1557. The database, using Paradox software, was also developed to create a profile of the owners of printed books in Britain during that period. A two-fold process in gathering evidence was used to devise the database. Printed copies from British libraries were systematically examined and vital information was obtained from published sources. The database contains bibliographical edition information and records copy-specific information of ownership.

A librarian tells of proposing the publication of a series of occasional papers for the Council of the Bibliographical Society in the late 1980s. He suggested that 'Marks in Books' be adopted as the theme of the series, that these themes be related to institutions and their histories and that strong emphasis be placed on illustration. However, various issues in the preparation of 'Marks in Books' need consideration. These include an issue being prepared by Kathleen Scott, which focuses on English illuminated borders, and another issue which focuses on the contemporary use and collection of English incunabula by Joseph Smith.

The 'Dated and Datable Borders in English Books' project was organized with the aim of providing language and criteria for close or closely approximate dating of illuminated borders and to depict the chronological and localized development of English illuminated borderwork from the 14th to the early part of the 16th century. The Private Libraries in Renaissance England Project focuses on records of book ownership found in probate inventories and account books. The project was founded in the late 1980s by Prof Robert Fehrenbach of the College of William and Mary at Williamsburg with the aim of recording the evidence of book ownership in England from as early as 1500 to 1660. Two main databases which have identical format are supported by the project. The first database contains previously unpublished records while the other database presents records obtained from previously published sources.

A man tells of organizing a database for marks of ownership of British and American book collectors. He defines 'marks of ownership' as various kinds of physical markings found in all books except bookplates inside books, bookstamps on covers or spines and owners' signatures. He is currently organizing results of research on marks of provenance into a book and is creating a database for book markings which will sort markings by type and common characteristics. This will enable other researchers to easily locate a book's correct section and find illustrations of representative shelfmarks of different collectors.
