Purpose: The purpose of this study is to determine the need, purpose, nature, scope and the outcome of continuing education programs either having positive or negative effects on the personal and professional lives of the participants. Findings: Elaborated tlie effects of CEP on the librarians' professional lives and determined the librarians' needs and preferences for continuing education activities. Findings of the study revealed that CEPs improved librarians' professional skills and helped them learn new and up to date professional methods and technicjues. Also identified the barriers faced by Pakistani librarians while participating in CEPs. The study indicated that CEPs proved very helpful in capacity building of professional librarians. Design/methodology/approach: The study is based on a survey questionnaire adopted from various studies relating to Continuing Education Programs (CEP). Population of the study included 220 library professionals. The sample of the study consisted of 130 Librarians who attended the 9th and 10th LIS Conference organized by the DLIS, University of Peshawar in 2014 and 2017 held in Baragali Summer Campus of the University of Peshawar. Practical implications: It is expected that the results of this sfildy will be of practical importance to design continuing education programs for librarians. This study will stimulate CEPs managing associations or organizations to check outcomes, whether they are valuable for the participants. Originality/value: This study investigated the present status of librarians' continuing education and explored the need, purpose, nature and scope of continuing education programs in Pakistan.
