We demonstrate the stable and flexible light delivery of multi-microjoule, sub-200-fs pulses over a ∼10-m-long vacuumized anti-resonant hollow-core fiber (AR-HCF), which was successfully used for high-performance pulse synchronization. Compared with the pulse train launched into the AR-HCF, the transmitted pulse train out of the fiber exhibits excellent stabilities in pulse power and spectrum, with pointing stability largely improved. The walk-off between the fiber-delivery and the other free-space-propagation pulse trains, in an open loop, was measured to be −7. This walk-off can be further suppressed to ∼2 fs rms simply by using an active control loop, highlighting the great application potentials of this AR-HCF setup in large-scale laser and accelerator facilities.

A low-dispersion mirror (LDM), an important component in ultrafast laser systems, requires both a broad low-dispersion laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT). It is difficult for a traditional quarter-wavelength-based dielectric LDM to achieve these characteristics at the same time. We propose a novel, to the best of our knowledge, low-dispersion mirror (NLDM) that combines periodic chirped layers at the top and alternating quarter-wavelength layers at the bottom. Low dispersion is achieved by introducing a large same group delay (GD) for different wavelengths, so the bandwidth is broadened greatly. In addition, owing to the staggered electric field intensity peak effect in the structure, the NLDM shows the potential for high laser damage resistance. The experiments demonstrated that the NLDM doubles the low-dispersion bandwidth, while the LIDT is also increased compared with the LDM. This novel concept results in improved performance and paves the way toward a new generation of the LDM for ultrafast bandwidth and a high laser applications.

We demonstrate the temporal pedestal suppression in a Ti:sapphire chirped-pulse amplification laser system. The far-field spectral phase noise can be avoided by using a stretcher based on two concave mirrors in the system, reducing the intensity and the time range of the amplified pulse’s pedestal. At the amplified energy of 1.7 J, the contrast measurement showed that the pedestal intensity was at a level of about 1 0 − 10 within a 10 ps time window near the main pulse. In the proton acceleration experiment, a 10 nm thickness CH target was irradiated by the high-contrast pulse with the focused intensity of ∼ 1.4 × 1 0 20 W / c m 2 , which generated a proton beam with a cutoff energy of 16 MeV.

A few-cycle mid-infrared (MIR) laser is demonstrated via nonlinear self-compression in solid thin plates. In this novel solution, the anomalous material dispersion in the MIR band and the chirp induced by self-phase modulation are mutually compensated, which can achieve self-compression. Finally, with the 4 µm laser injection with 4.8 mJ/155 fs and few-cycle pulses with 3.44 mJ, 29.4 fs are generated with a high efficiency of 71.7%, and the system maintains very good spectral stability in 10 days. Compared with other post-compression methods, this self-compression technique has the advantages of high efficiency and robust and large energy expansion scale, which can be further extended to MIR lasers with other wavelengths and higher peak power.

In this Letter, we experimentally investigate a new kind of nanosecond pre-pulse, which originates from the bidirectional scattering of crystals in traditional Ti:sapphire multi-pass amplifiers. The experimental results demonstrate that the intensity of scattering-induced pre-pulses is very sensitive to the scattering angle, and the delay time between the pre-pulse and the main pulse is an integer multiple of the light path in each pass of the amplifier. An optimized multi-pass amplifier configuration is proposed, for what is believed to be the first time, to suppress the scattering-induced pre-pulses. The contrast ratio between pre-pulses and the main pulse is enhanced by more than two orders of magnitude, reaching a level of 10−10. This novel multi-pass amplifier configuration is very simple and economical, and provides an effective solution for the temporal contrast enhancement in the nanosecond range.

We experimentally investigate the laser polarization effect on the supercontinuum (SC) generation through femtosecond laser filamentation in air. By tuning filamenting laser ellipticity from linear polarization to circular polarization, the spectral intensity of the SC after filamentation gradually increases, while the spectral bandwidth of the SC continuously decreases. The laser ellipticity-dependent spectral intensity modulation of the SC is stronger at higher filamenting pulse energy. Laser energy deposits more in linearly polarized laser filaments than in circularly polarized laser filaments. The experimental results are supported by numerical simulations. A physical picture based on the laser ellipticity-dependent clamped intensity inside the filament, together with the Kerr nonlinearity and plasma related self-phase modulations, is proposed to explain the observation.

We demonstrate in this Letter the generation of carrier-envelope-phase (CEP)-stabilized laser pulses at 910 nm with simultaneously high-temporal-contrast, broad spectral bandwidths and few-cycle pulse durations. Through combining the techniques of cascaded optical parametric amplification (OPA) and second-harmonic generation (SHG) in the laser setup, a pulse temporal contrast as high as > 10 12 has been obtained at the laser output. During the OPA and SHG processes, both the pulse chirp and gain bandwidth are perfectly optimized, leading to the generation of 170 µJ pulses with > 200 n m bandwidth and ∼ 15 f s pulse duration. Moreover, the CEP of the laser is stabilized passively to a noise level of less than 340 mrad. This high-quality pulsed light source, as the seed laser of the deuterated potassium dihydrogen phosphate (DKDP)-based 100 PW system, will be integrated into the Station of Extreme Light facility in the near future.

Here we demonstrate that the pulses in thin solid plates (TSPs) can simultaneously realize contrast improvement and spectral broadening. In a proof-of-principle experiment, we used nine thin fused silica plates to make the beam form a series of foci in sequence, by which the divergence of the beam of the main pulse was seriously changed. After the last plate, the intense center spot of the output beam was picked out, and the energy of about 129 µJ was obtained for the 400 µJ input pulses, corresponding to a total transmission efficiency of more than 30%. The contrast measurement showed that the contrast was improved by 2 orders of magnitude. Meanwhile, the cleaned pulses were broadened spectrally, spanning from 680 to 930 nm at the − 23 d B intensity level and giving a compressed pulse of 11.3 fs. These characteristics make the TSP method suitable to generate broadband seed pulses for high-contrast, few-cycle intense lasers.

We demonstrate a novel active multipass stretcher that can deliver pulses with large chirp, adjustable chirped pulse duration, and great beam quality for a high-flux chirped-pulse amplification system. The stretcher is based on a Martinez-type stretcher and a regenerative amplifier structure, and the laser pulses can be amplified while they are stretched in the cavity. By controlling the round trip of the pulses running in the cavity, chirped pulses with more than 10 ns, even scaling to 30 ns, pulse duration and 20 nm bandwidth can be obtained very easily, which indicates a chirp rate of 0.5 ns/nm at 1053 nm central wavelength. Chirped pulses with several millijoules energy can be delivered with an Nd:glass-based intracavity amplifier used to compensate the losses. Benefited by the advantage of regenerative structure, the output pulses have excellent beam quality with M2 of 1.1. Finally, the chirped pulses from this novel stretcher are compressed to 1.13 times the Fourier transform limit. With these advantages, this novel multipass active stretcher is significant for ultra-intense laser systems, especially for high-flux and high-energy 100 petawatt lasers.

We experimentally report the generation of wavelength-tunable blueshifting soliton in the visible spectral region through a gas-filled single-ring photonic crystal fiber (SR-PCF). In particular, in a He-filled SR-PCF, we observed a sharp narrow-band spectral peak at the first resonant spectral region of the SR-PCF, which results from phase-matched nonlinear processes. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time investigating the influence of the core-cladding resonance on the blueshifting soliton. In addition, when Ar gas was filled into the SR-PCF, some interference fringes on the blueshifting soliton were observed at high pulse-energy levels due to plasma-induced pulse fission. These two experimental observations are confirmed by numerical simulations. Furthermore, through properly adjusting input pulse energy, we found that the blueshifting soliton can obtain a high conversion efficiency (∼84%) and its wavelength can be tuned over hundreds of nanometers (∼240 nm).

We report on the laser pulse output of 339 J centered at 800 nm from a chirped-pulse amplification (CPA) Ti:sapphire laser system at the Shanghai Superintense Ultrafast Laser Facility. The experimental results demonstrated that the parasitic lasing as well as the transverse amplified spontaneous emission of the homemade 235-mm-diameter Ti:sapphire final amplifier were suppressed successfully via the temporal dual-pulse pumped scheme and the index-matching liquid cladding technique. The maximum pump-to-signal conversion efficiency of 32.1% was measured for the final amplifier. With a compressor transmission efficiency of 64% and a compressed pulse duration of 21 fs obtained for the sample light at a lower energy level, this laser system could potentially generate a compressed laser pulse with a peak power of 10.3 PW. The experimental results represent significant progress with respect to the CPA laser.

We investigate in the experiments the ionization-induced adiabatic soliton compression process in a short length of He-filled single-ring photonic crystal fiber. We observe that the plasma-driven blueshifting solitons show little residual light near the pump wavelength in a certain pulse energy region, leading to a high-efficiency frequency upconversion process. In contrast, at high pulse energy levels, we observe that the quality of the frequency upshifting process is impaired due to the existence of a dynamical loss channel induced by the coupling of the soliton to linear modes near the pump wavelength. In addition, through adjusting the input pulse energy, the central wavelength of blueshifting solitons can be continuously tuned over 300 nm. These experimental results, confirmed by numerical simulations, not only offer a deep insight into ionization-induced soliton-plasma dynamics in gas-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fibers, but also develop highly tunable ultrafast light sources at visible wavelengths, which may have many applications in ultrafast spectroscopy.

A carrier-envelope-phase-stable near-single-cycle mid-infrared laser based on optical parametric chirped pulse amplification and hollow-core fiber compression is demonstrated. A 4 μm laser pulse with 11.8 mJ energy is delivered from a KTA-based optical parametric chirped pulse amplification (OPCPA) with 100 Hz repetition rate, and compressed to 105 fs by a two-grating compressor with efficiency over 50%. Subsequently, the pulse spectrum is broadened by employing a krypton gas-filled hollow-core fiber. Then, the pulse duration is further compressed to 21.5 fs through a CaF2 bulk material with energy of 2.6 mJ and energy stability of 0.9% RMS, which is about 1.6 cycles for a 4 μm laser pulse. The carrier envelope phase of the near-single-cycle 4 μm laser pulse is passively stabilized with 370 mrad.

The optical parametric-chirped pulse amplification (OPCPA) based on large-aperture nonlinear optical crystals is promising for implementation of an ultrahigh peak-power laser system of 10 PW and beyond. We demonstrated the highest energy broadband OPCPA at 800 nm, to the best of our knowledge, by using an 80 mm in diameter LiB(3)O(5)(LBO) amplifier, with an output energy of 28.68 J, a bandwidth of 80 nm (FWHM), and conversion efficiency of 25.38%. After compression, a peak power of 0.61 PW with 33.8 fs pulse duration is produced.

We demonstrate a 100 μJ

We demonstrate what we believe to be a novel tunable IR optical parametric amplifier (OPA) with the passively stabilized carrier-envelope phase (CEP), in which a hollow fiber is used to improve the output beam quality and to overcome the spatial chirp issue. Pumped by an 800 nm pump source, the output pulses are tunable from 1.2 to 2.4 microm with the CEP stabilization. The maximum output average energy can reach approximately (1.2 W/40 fs)/1 kHz with the total of (6.8 W/40 fs)/1 kHz pump energy. Further, the high-order harmonic generation driven by the tunable phase-stabilized OPA has been demonstrated.

We report on the generation of 192.3 J centered at 800 nm wavelength from a chirped-pulse amplification (CPA) Ti:sapphire laser system. The experimental results demonstrate that parasitic lasing can be suppressed successfully in the final amplifier based on a Ti:sapphire crystal of 150 mm in diameter. An over 50% pump-to-signal conversion efficiency was measured for the final amplifier by optimizing the time delay of two pump pulses and enhancing the injected seed energy. With 72% compressor throughput efficiency and 27 fs long compressed pulse duration obtained at a lower energy level, this laser could potentially support a compressed laser pulse of 5.13 PW peak power. The experimental results represent notable progress regarding the CPA laser.

In this Letter, we present a study of high-energy and high-conversion-efficiency broadband optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification (OPCPA) system with a 100 mm×100 mm×17 mm LBO crystal near 800 nm. The results showed that the back-conversion was sensitively affected by the pump intensity and the injected signal intensity. It occurred when the injected signal was above 0.82 J with a pump energy of 170 J, and this effect also reshaped the amplified spectrum. After optimization, an amplified energy of 45.3 J was achieved with a conversion efficiency of 26.3% by the OPCPA. The peak power of the hybrid CPA-OPCPA laser system reached 1.02 PW with a compressed duration of 32 fs, which is the first reported OPCPA peak power higher than 1 PW, to the best of our knowledge.

A pulse clean technique in time domain combining noncollinear optical-parametric amplification and second-harmonic generation is demonstrated. The measurement-limited10(10) temporal contrast ratio of the 0.5 mJ/40 fs pulse near 800 nm is obtained over a large temporal range extending from1 ps before the main pulse. The contrast ratio enhancement as fourth power of the initial contrast is demonstrated. The total efficiency is6% for the 8.2 mJ/40 fs initial incident femtosecond pulse.

Attosecond-pulse extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) photoionization in a two-color laser field is investigated. Attosecond pulse trains with different numbers of pulses are examined, and their strong dependence on photoelectronic spectra is found. Single-color driving-laser-field-assisted attosecond XUV photoionization cannot determine the number of attosecond pulses from the photoelectronic energy spectrum that are detected orthogonally to the beam direction and the electric field vector of the linearly polarized laser field. A two-color-field-assisted XUV photoionization scheme is proposed for directly determining the number of attosecond pulses from a spectrum detected orthogonally.

A compact multiterawatt laser system based on optical parametric chirped pulse amplification is demonstrated. Chirped pulses are amplified from 20 pJ to 900 mJ by two lithium triborate optical parametric preamplifiers and a final KDP optical parametric power amplifier with a pump energy of 5 J at 532 nm from Nd:YAG-Nd: glass hybrid amplifiers, After compression, we obtained a final output of 570-mJ-155-fs pulses with a peak power of 3.67 TW, which is the highest output power from an optical parametric chirped pulse amplification laser, to the best of our knowledge.
