4. Ultrahigh extinction ratio and ultra-low insertion loss silicon TE polarizer covering 1260–1675?nm bandwidth

Abstract

An ultra-broadband TE polarizer with outstanding performance is proposed and demonstrated on a 220?nm-thick silicon-on-insulator platform. The proposed TE polarizer consists of six cascaded directional couplers assisted by subwavelength grating (SWG) structures and two Euler bends. The SWG is introduced to control the coupling strength of the fundamental TE and TM modes. Simulations show that our proposed TE polarizer possesses ultra-low insertion loss (IL < 0.3?dB) for the fundamental TE mode and an ultrahigh polarization extinction ratio (PER > 35?dB) for the fundamental TM mode covering all communication bands from 1260?nm to 1675?nm. The experimental results show that the fabricated TE polarizer has excellent performance of IL < 0.6?dB and PER > 35?dB over a 210?nm bandwidth, which is limited by the measurement equipment. To the best of our knowledge, our proposed TE polarizer is the first single-etched all-silicon TE polarizer with such high PER covering all communication bands.

42. Double-pumped multiwavelength fiber optical parametric oscillator based on a Sagnac loop filter

Abstract

We propose a double-pumped ring cavity multiwavelength fiber optical parametric oscillator (MW-FOPO) using a highly nonlinear dispersion-shifted fiber (HNL-DSF) as the gain medium and a polarization maintained fiber based Sagnac loop filter as the comblike filter. 22-wavelength lasing of the double-pumped MW-FOPO with a ripple less than ±2.5??dB and a wavelength spacing of about 0.8 nm in a wavelength range from 1541 nm to 1558 nm is experimentally demonstrated. We discussed the power stability of the multiwavelength lasing of the double-pumped MW-FOPO. A comparison of the output spectra between the double-pumped MW-FOPO and single-pumped MW-FOPO is also presented.

43. Enhancing extraordinary transmission of light through a metallic nanoslit with a nanocavity antenna

Abstract

The extraordinary transmission of light through a vertical nanoslit in a metal film is enhanced by introducing a nanocavity antenna formed by a nearby metallic nanostrip over the slit opening. For a fixed wavelength, the width of the metallic nanostrip should be chosen to make the horizontal metal-insulator-metal waveguide of finite length resonant as a Fabry–Perot cavity. When such a cavity antenna is used to enhance the transmission through a nonresonant nanoslit, the slit should be opened at a position with a maximal magnetic field in the horizontal resonant cavity. It is shown that an optimized cavity antenna can enhance greatly the transmission of light through a nonresonant nanoslit (by about 20 times) or a resonant nanoslit (by 124%). Such a transmission enhancement with a nanocavity antenna is studied for the first time, and the physical mechanism is explained.

44. Three-dimensional photonic crystal of negative refraction achieved by interference lithography

Abstract

A three-dimensional bicontinuous photonic crystal of a bcc lattice with all-angle negative refraction that can be achieved at optical frequencies by interference lithography is proposed. A numerical simulation of the focusing imaging of a slab of this crystal was performed to verify the property of all-angle negative refraction. The dependence of the negative-refraction frequency range on the threshold of photoresist development and on the dielectric constant is also discussed.

47. Highly circularly polarized and coherent thermal emission based on chiral quasi bound states in the continuum.

Abstract

Polarization, temporal coherence, and spatial coherence are crucial for far-field thermal emission. However, achieving chiral thermal emission with both ultra-narrow bandwidth and ultrahigh directionality remains a challenge. In this study, we address this problem by combining the principles of band folding and chiral quasi bound states in the continuum. The demonstrated thermal emitter, a tri-layered structure consisting of a planar chiral silicon metasurface, a silica spacer, and a reflecting gold film, numerically achieves an emissivity circular dichroism of 0.984, a full width at half maximum of 1.6 nm, and a divergence angle of 1° at wavelength 1170 nm, surpassing the state-of-the-art thermal emitters. Our finding provides a new, to our knowledge, approach for designing chiral thermal emitters, which may find use in the areas of thermal lighting, infrared camouflage, thermal imaging, and infrared sensing.
