An optical fiber sensor based on arrays of silica microspheres is proposed. The microspheres are produced separately using a fusion splicer and then also connected in series by fusion splicing. Three different sensors are presented, differing by the number of microspheres. Due to the geometry of the structures, different behaviors are obtained in strain measurements. Sensors with an odd number of microspheres are more sensitive to strain than the ones with an even number of microspheres. Additionally, the sensing heads are subjected to temperature where a sensitivity of 20.3 pm/°C is obtained in a range of 200°C.

An intensity-based highly birefringent (Hi-Bi) fiber loop mirror (FLM) sensor is proposed which uses a wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) fiber coupler. The effect of integrating the WDM coupler in a FLM configuration is first studied. A section of Hi-Bi (bow-tie) fiber of length 0.26 m is then placed in the fiber loop, making the spectral response of the device simultaneously dependent on the Hi-Bi fiber section and WDM coupler characteristics. When strain is applied to the sensing head, the spectral signal is modulated in amplitude, in contrast with the conventional Hi-Bi FLM sensors in which there are wavelength shifts. The sensor was characterized in strain and a sensitivity of (-2.2±0.4)×10(-3) με(-1) for a range of 300 με was attained. The self-referenced character of the sensor is noted.

Phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (φOTDR) is a simple and effective tool allowing the distributed monitoring of vibrations along single-mode fibers. We show in this Letter that modulation instability (MI) can induce a position-dependent signal fading in long-range φOTDR over conventional optical fibers. This fading leads to a complete masking of the interference signal recorded at certain positions and therefore to a sensitivity loss at these positions. We illustrate this effect both theoretically and experimentally. While this effect is detrimental in the context of distributed vibration analysis using φOTDR, we also believe that the technique provides a clear and insightful way to evidence the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam recurrence associated with the MI process.

In this Letter, a hybrid interferometer for simultaneous measurement of the partial pressures of O2 and CO2 mixtures is reported. The sensing head consists in the combination of two interferometric structures, one a Fabry-Pérrot cavity and the other a modal interferometer. The intrinsic Fabry-Pérot was formed by splicing a single mode fiber with a graded index fiber length that was then subjected to chemical etching creating an air cavity. The second interferometer is based on a splice of a pure silica tube in series with the Fabry-Pérot. It was observed for a particular gas that its refractive index changes with pressure variation in a specific way, a characteristic that permitted the simultaneous measurement of partial pressures of CO2 and O2 with rms deviations of ~±48.7 kPa and ~±20.1 kPa, respectively.

A spatial optical filter based on a hollow-core silica tube is proposed. Because of the hollow-core dimensions, it is possible to obtain a periodical spatial filter ranging from 1200 to 1700 nm with a channel spacing of 2.64 THz. The bandwidth is approximately 5.32 nm, and the isolation loss is ~30 dB. The optical losses are approximately ~0.67 dB/mm for a wavelength of 1500 nm. The 40 mm long spatial optical filter is tested as a sensing element and subjected to different physical parameters. The spatial optical filter is wavelength sensitive to strain and temperature, while for refractive-index variations there is an optical power dependency. This fiber structure can be used as a sensing element for extreme conditions, such as in very high temperature environments, where it presents a sensitivity of 27.5 pm °C(-1)., (© 2012 Optical Society of America)

A Fabry-Perot (FP) cavity of simple design and based on a pure silica diaphragm-free hollow tube is proposed. Its operation is based on a first reflection of light at the end of the single-mode fiber that illuminates the silica rod and in a second reflection that takes place at the end of the rod. The FP cavity is characterized for high temperature, pressure and refractive index sensing, showing useful characteristics for the measurement of these three parameters. The diaphragm-free configuration simplifies the measurement of the refractive index of fluids.

In this Letter, we present a fiber loop mirror configuration based on a suspended twin-core fiber for sensing applications. Using the suspended twin-core fiber, the fringe pattern is due to the differential optical patch of the light in the two cores associated with a refractive index difference of approximately 10(-3), which indicates an advantage of this approach compared with those based on high-birefringent fibers, namely, the possibility of using a small length of fiber. The sensing configuration was characterized for torsion, temperature, and strain. Using the fast Fourier transform technique, it is possible to obtain measurand-induced amplitude variations of the fringe pattern. The results obtained indicate the viability of a temperature- and strain-independent torsion sensor.
