We investigate transient, photo-thermally induced metasurface effects in a planar thin-film multilayer based on a phase-transition material. Illumination of a properly designed multilayer with two obliquely incident and phase-coherent pulsed pumps induces a transient and reversible temperature pattern in the phase-transition layer. The deep periodic modulation of the refractive index, caused by the interfering pumps, produces a transient Fano-like spectral feature associated with a guided-mode resonance. A coupled opto-thermal model is employed to analyze the temporal dynamics of the transient metasurface and to evaluate its speed and modulation capabilities. Using near-infrared pump pulses with peak intensities of the order of 100 MW/cm 2 and duration of a few picoseconds, we find that the characteristic time scale of the transient metasurface is of the order of nanoseconds. Our results indicate that inducing transient metasurface effects in films of phase-transition materials can lead to new opportunities for dynamic control of quality (Q)-factor in photonic resonances, and for light modulation and switching.

Field trials are of key importance for novel technologies seeking commercialization and widespread adoption. This is also the case for quantum key distribution (QKD), which allows distant parties to distill a secret key with unconditional security. Typically, QKD demonstrations over urban infrastructures require complex stabilization and synchronization systems to maintain a low quantum bit error and high secret key rates over time. Here we present a field trial that exploits low-complexity self-stabilized hardware and a novel synchronization technique, to perform QKD over optical fibers deployed in the city center of Padua, Italy. Two techniques recently introduced by our research group are evaluated in a real-world environment: the iPOGNAC polarization encoder was used for preparation of the quantum states, while temporal synchronization was performed with the Qubit4Sync algorithm. The results here presented demonstrate the validity and robustness of our resource-effective QKD system, which can be easily and rapidly installed in an existing telecommunication infrastructure, thus representing an important step towards mature, efficient, and low-cost QKD systems.

We demonstrate optically tunable control of second-harmonic generation in all-dielectric nanoantennas: by using a control beam that is absorbed by the nanoresonator, we thermo-optically change the refractive index of the radiating element to modulate the amplitude of the second-harmonic signal. For a moderate temperature increase of roughly 40 K, modulation of the efficiency up to 60% is demonstrated; this large tunability of the single meta-atom response paves the way to exciting avenues for reconfigurable homogeneous and heterogeneous metasurfaces.

Polarization-encoded free-space quantum communication requires a quantum state source featuring fast modulation, long-term stability, and a low intrinsic error rate. Here we present a polarization encoder that, contrary to previous solutions, generates predetermined polarization states with a fixed reference frame in free-space. The proposed device does not require calibration either at the transmitter or at the receiver and achieves long-term stability. A proof-of-concept experiment is also reported, demonstrating a quantum bit error rate lower than 0.2% for several hours without any active recalibration.

Quantum key distribution (QKD) allows distant parties to exchange cryptographic keys with unconditional security by encoding information on the degrees of freedom of photons. Polarization encoding has been extensively used for QKD along free-space, optical fiber, and satellite links. However, the polarization encoders used in such implementations are unstable, expensive, and complex and can even exhibit side channels that undermine the security of the protocol. Here we propose a self-compensating polarization encoder based on a lithium niobate phase modulator inside a Sagnac interferometer and implement it using only commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components. Our polarization encoder combines a simple design and high stability reaching an intrinsic quantum bit error rate as low as 0.2%. Since realization is possible from the 800 to the 1550 nm band using COTS devices, our polarization modulator is a promising solution for free-space, fiber, and satellite-based QKD.

Four-wave mixing (FWM) based parametric amplification in optical microfibers (OMFs) is demonstrated over a wavelength range of over 1000 nm by exploiting their tailorable dispersion characteristics to achieve phase matching. Simulations indicate that for any set of wavelengths satisfying the FWM energy conservation condition there are two diameters at which phase matching in the fundamental mode can occur. Experiments with a high-power pulsed source working in conjunction with a periodically poled silica fiber (PPSF), producing both fundamental and second harmonic signals, are undertaken to investigate the possibility of FWM parametric amplification in OMFs. Large increases of idler output power at the third harmonic wavelength were recorded for diameters close to the two phase matching diameters. A total amplification of more than 25 dB from the initial signal was observed in a 6 mm long optical microfiber, after accounting for the thermal drift of the PPSF and other losses in the system.

We describe the coupling dynamics of one-dimensional surface plasmon polaritons supported by a pair of hetero-junctions between two-dimensional media. We first discuss the unique symmetry properties of the supermodes of such structures, and then we exploit the possibility of electrically tuning the conductivity of graphene to demonstrate tailoring and manipulation of light propagation in a graphene/graphene platform.

All-fiber ns-pulsed visible laser at λ=521  nm is realized by frequency doubling an Yb-doped fiber laser with a periodically poled silica fiber. A 50-mW second-harmonic (SH) output power is produced that is over 6-orders of magnitude greater than previous results obtained with poled fibers in the visible spectral range. The normalized conversion efficiency of 0.3%/W is to date the largest demonstrated with poled fiber technology. Furthermore, 21% conversion efficiency is achieved for the doubling of 8-ps pulses from a neodymium-doped yttrium vanadate solid-state laser. The advances are made possible by the precision and flexibility offered by using the continuous periodic UV erasure, as opposite to photolithographic methods, for the fabrication of over 20-cm-long χ(2)-gratings for quasi-phase matched SH generation.

We investigate the tuning of the coupling of surface plasmon polaritons between two spatially separated graphene layers. We demonstrate that by slightly changing the chemical potential, a graphene coupler can switch from the bar to the cross state; as a consequence, the coupling coefficient in such structures can be easily controlled by means of an applied electrical signal.

We discuss the existence of nonlinear modes sustained by graphene layers in dielectric waveguides. Taking advantage of the almost two dimensional nature of graphene, we introduce the nonlinear effect as a parameter in the continuity equations. We then apply our modeling to a simple slab waveguide to enlighten how graphene can be used to induce huge nonlinear phase shifts at easily accessible power levels.

Fabrication and cw lasing at 798.25 nm is reported for femtosecond (fs) and picosecond (ps) laser-inscribed channel waveguides in Ti:sapphire crystals. Lasing in channels written by fs (ps) pulses was obtained above a threshold of 84 mW (189 mW) with a maximum output power and a slope efficiency of 143 mW (45 mW) and 23.5% (7.1%), respectively. The emission wavelength was tuned over a 170 nm range by using a birefringent filter in an external cavity.

We theoretically and experimentally investigate multistep parametric processes in broadband optical parametric generators (OPGs) based on periodically poled 1 mol. % MgO-doped stoichiometric LiTaO3. We demonstrate that parametric collateral processes may deplete or enhance spectral portions of the OPG output, depending on pump pulse duration.

We measure the values of individual chi((2)) tensor components in a birefringent periodically poled silica fiber through spectrally separated type I and type II second-harmonic generation. We demonstrate that the chi((2)) tensor symmetry is consistent with that of chi((3)) in silica and thereby provide experimental evidence that this chi((2)) originates from a chi((3)) process.

Precise control of the bandwidth of quasi-phase-matched second-harmonic generation in silica fibers is realized through chirped-period poling. The bandwidth is expanded by a factor of 33 over a uniform-period poled fiber of the same interaction length.

We demonstrate an ultracompact optical filter based on two coupled high-index contrast GaAs photonic crystal (PhC) membranes. The PhC membranes consist of a square lattice of air holes and behave as a Fabry-Perot cavity whose reflectivity and transmissivity depend on the air gap between the two membranes. The normal-incidence reflectance measurements and the numerical simulation of reflection spectra show a high sensitivity to the geometrical parameters, such as the distance between the slabs, whose control would make the device suitable for a new class of tunable optical filters.

The generation of 236 mW of second-harmonic power in a 32-cm-long periodically poled silica fiber, corresponding to an average conversion efficiency of 15.2+/-0.5%, is reported. This represents the highest normalized second-harmonic conversion and the highest average second-harmonic power ever reported for a periodically poled silica fiber, to our knowledge. The enhancement is attributed to an improved design of the specialty twin-hole fiber and the extension of the nonlinear interaction length.

We study light propagation in nanoscale periodic structures composed of dielectric and metal in the visible range. We demonstrate that diffraction can be tailored both in magnitude and in sign by varying the geometric features of the waveguides. Diffraction management on a subwavelength scale is demonstrated by numerical solution of Maxwell equations in the frequency domain.

We present a single-pass frequency doubler that efficiently converts broadband near-infrared femtosecond pulses into narrow-spectrum visible picosecond pulses. An optimal control technique is introduced for properly designing aperiodically poled nonlinear crystals to generate visible pulses of the desired amplitude, phase profile, and carrier wavelength.

Broadband tunability of the second-harmonic wavelength is achieved in periodically poled silica fibers. A wavelength tuning range of almost 45 nm of the fundamental wave is demonstrated through mechanical compression tuning of the quasi-phase-matched periodic structure. The uniform strain applied along the entire periodic structure enables the spectral profile and the conversion efficiency of the generated second harmonic to be preserved for the full tuning range. To our knowledge, the achieved tuning range realized through this technique is far greater than that possible with uniform periodically poled crystals.

We report a systematic analysis of anomalous refractive effects at interfaces between two photonic crystal waveguide arrays. Discrete negative refraction can be easily predicted from the sign of the coupling coefficient between adjacent waveguides, regardless of handedness of propagation.

We give direct experimental evidence that the group velocity of ultrashort pulses can be controlled through chi(2)-cascaded interactions, under the condition of large group-velocity mismatch. The group velocity can be finely tuned by acting on pulse intensity and phase mismatch. Group-delay shifts up to 50 fs are achieved by propagating 40 fs pulses around 1400 nm in a 25 mm long periodically poled stoichiometric lithium tantalate crystal.

Light propagation in uniform arrays of photonic crystal waveguides is studied. We demonstrate that, in stark contrast to the case of conventional waveguide arrays, diffraction can be tailored both in magnitude and sign by varying only the spacing between adjacent waveguides. Diffraction management in ultracompact arrays of straight photonic crystal waveguides is demonstrated by solving Maxwell's equations through the time-domain finite-element method.

We report experimental evidence of soliton reflection at the boundary of quadratic nonlinear media. The evolution of beams incident upon the interface of periodically poled LiNbO3 and uniform LiNbO3 is considered; in the whole device the linear refractive index is homogeneous. Linear beam transmission and soliton reflection at the nonlinear phase-mismatched boundary were observed. Numerical simulations that correspond to the experiments are also presented.

We report the experimental demonstration of spatial nonlinear beam displacement caused by an interface between periodically modulated and uniform quadratic nonlinearity. We observe intensity- and phase-mismatch-dependent spatial beam displacement at 1548 nm in lithium niobate waveguides. The device has the potential to provide a soliton-emission-based, ultrafast all-optical switch.

We perform a linear stability analysis of the Ablowitz-Biondini equations to explain the dynamic evolution of the noise squeezing, caused by the interplay among optical solitons and noise components, of initially uncorrelated statistics in fiber systems with dispersion management.

We show numerically and experimentally that spatial trapping can be induced in quadratic media even if the pump pulse's duration is shorter than the group-delay mismatch between fundamental wave and second-harmonic components. The influence of phase mismatch and pulse power on the trapping effect is discussed. Spatial, temporal, and spectral behaviors that accompany self-trapped propagation are highlighted.
