We report the development of a silica glass single-mode polarization-maintaining fiber with birefringence induced by artificial anisotropic glass in the circular core without any external stress zones or structured cladding. The fiber core is composed of silica and germanium-doped silica nanorods ordered in submicrometer interleaved layers. The fiber has a measured cut-off wavelength at 1113 nm, phase birefringence of 0.3×10−4, and an effective mode diameter of 10.5 µm at the wavelength of 1550 nm. The polarization extinction ratio in the fiber is 20 dB at 1550 nm. The fiber is compatible with the standard SMF-28 fiber and can be easily integrated using standard fusion splicing with losses of 0.1 dB.

We demonstrate a new, to the best of our knowledge, method of generating mid-infrared pulses by difference frequency mixing the Stokes pulse generated by four-wave mixing in a photonic crystal fiber with the remaining pump pulse. The Stokes pulses generated by four-wave mixing are inherently overlapped temporally and spatially with the pump pulse at the output of the fiber. Focusing this output into a nonlinear crystal phase matched for difference frequency generation between the pump and Stokes pulses results in a simple method of generating mid-infrared pulses. With a pump source at 1.064 µm, and a photonic crystal fiber engineered to generate Stokes pulses at approximately 1.65 µm, we generate 160 mW of mid-infrared light at approximately 3 µm through difference frequency generation.

International audience; We report the experimental observation of a modulation instability induced Kerr frequency comb in an all fiber Fabry–Pérot resonator. We fully characterized, in intensity and phase, the frequency comb using a commercial 10 MHz resolution heterodyne detection system to reveal more than 125 comb teeth within each of the modulation instability sidelobes. Moreover, we were able to reveal the fine temporal structure in phase and intensity of the output Turing patterns. The experimental results are generally in good agreement with numerical simulations.

International audience; We experimentally investigate two cycles of Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou recurrence in optical fibers. Using three waves input we characterize the distance of maximum compression points against sideband amplitude and relative phase, outlining the qualitative changes of the dynamics due to separatrix crossing. Experimental results are in good agreement with numerical simulations and analytical predictions.

We experimentally demonstrate the amplification of chirped pulses in a fiber optical parametric chirped pulse amplifier up to 1 μJ. This high energy level originates from combined Raman and parametric processes in a specially designed solid core photonic bandgap fiber. Output pulses are recompressed up to 560 fs. These performances make this all-fiber system compatible with first stages of bulk amplification chains.

The fiber optical parametric amplifier (FOPA) has been well investigated and widely adopted at the telecommunication window, and outstanding progress has been achieved in areas such as high gain, wide bandwidths, and even flexible gain-spectrum shape. In contrast, a FOPA at the bio-favorable window, 1.0 μm, has been largely underexploited, especially for its relatively limited bandwidth. Here, we demonstrate an all-fiber single-pump FOPA at 1.0 μm with versatile performances, including ultrahigh gain (∼52 dB), wide bandwidth (∼110 nm), and good gain-spectrum flatness (∼3 dB). To showcase the practical applications, the FOPA is utilized to amplify the broadband optical image signal from a spectrally encoded microscopy, yielding a sensitivity enhancement of 47 dB. Thus, it is promising that this all-fiber versatile FOPA works well as an add-on module in boosting sensitivity for existing optical systems at a 1.0 μm window.

International audience; We investigate the propagation of a soliton in an axially-varying optical fiber with a progressive change from anomalous to normal dispersion regimes. Spectral and temporal measurements provide evidence for a complete annihilation of the soliton, which explodes into a polychromatic dispersive wave. This interpretation is confirmed by numerical solution of the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation.

We investigate the role played by fourth-order dispersion on the modulation instability process in dispersion oscillating fibers. It not only leads to the appearance of instability sidebands in the normal dispersion regime (as in uniform fibers), but also to a new class of large detuned instability peaks that we ascribe to the variation of dispersion. All these theoretical predictions are experimentally confirmed.

Fiber-based optical-parametric chirped-pulse amplification is reported at 1μm in a microstructured fiber in the femtosecond regime. The signal has been highly stretched by an Offner triplet and then amplified with an all-fiber, pulsed-pump, fiber optical-parametric amplifier. More than 30dB gain has been achieved over 8.3nm, and the amplified signal has been recompressed.

We report the experimental demonstration of a visible supercontinuum in the cw pumping regime. A 20 W ytterbium fiber laser at 1.06 microm is used to pump a photonic crystal fiber whose zero-dispersion wavelength decreases along the fiber length. Visible wavelengths are generated in the fundamental mode via trapping of dispersive waves by redshifted solitons.

We demonstrate a broadband all-fiber-optical parametric amplifier for ultrafast time-stretch imaging at 1.0 μm, featured by its compact design, alignment-free, high efficiency, and flexible gain spectrum through fiber nonlinearity- and dispersion-engineering: specifically on a dispersion-stabilized photonic-crystal fiber (PCF) to achieve a net gain over 20 THz (75 nm) and a highest gain of ~6000 (37.5 dB). Another unique feature of the parametric amplifier, over other optical amplifiers, is the coherent generation of a synchronized signal replica (called idler) that can be exploited to offer an extra 3-dB gain by optically superposing the signal and idler. It further enhances signal contrast and temporal stability. For proof-of-concept purpose, ultrahigh speed and diffraction-limited time-stretch microscopy is demonstrated with a single-shot line-scan rate of 13 MHz based on the dual-band (signal and idler) detection. Our scheme can be extended to other established bioimaging modalities, such as optical coherence tomography, near infrared fluorescence, and photoacoustic imaging, where weak signal detection at high speed is required.

We numerically and experimentally demonstrate ultra-broadband fiber optical parametric amplification in a microstructured fiber pumped by stretched short pulses. The chirped pump pulse induces a temporally spread spectral gain suitable for optical parametric chirped pulse amplification in fibers. Numerical simulation shows ~45 dB flat gain with more than 70 nm bandwidth, allowing sub-35 fs pulse amplification around 1 μm with reduced gain narrowing. This amplification principle is experimentally confirmed by measuring the instantaneous spectral gain band and related chirp.

We investigate numerically and experimentally the spectral correlation between multiple modulation instability (MI) side lobes in a dispersion oscillating fiber. By leveraging the dispersive Fourier transformation, we acquire instantaneous spectra and investigate the energy correlation between individual MI sidebands through scattergrams. We found that conjugate MI side lobes are strongly correlated while other combinations experience a very low degree of correlation, revealing that parametric processes related to each side lobe pair act quasi-independently.

We report the experimental demonstration of a modulation instability (MI) process assisted by a periodic dispersion modulation in an optical fiber. We observe the spontaneous growth of more than 10 pairs of MI sidebands spanning over more than 10 THz thanks to a quasi-phase-matched process.

We report the development of a compact, tunable synchronously pumped photonic crystal fiber (PCF)-based optical parametric oscillator (FOPO). The oscillator is pumped using a gain-switched laser diode producing 220 ps pulses around 1062 nm, amplified in a ytterbium doped amplifier to peak powers of 3.5 kW. The FOPO produces anti-Stokes pulses at wavelengths between 757 and 773 nm, with durations of 150 ps at average output powers exceeding 290 mW. The output slope efficiency of the device varies with output wavelength from 1.9 to 6.0%.
