One of the major challenges faced by externally occulted solar coronagraphs is the suppression of the light diffracted by the occulter edge. It is a contribution to the stray light that overwhelms the coronal signal on the focal plane and must be reduced by modifying the geometrical shape of the occulter. There is a rich literature, mostly experimental, on the appropriate choice of the most suitable shape. The problem arises when huge coronagraphs, such as those in formation flight, shall be tested in a laboratory. A recent contribution [Opt. Lett.41, 757 (2016)OPLEDP0146-959210.1364/OL.41.000757] provides the guidelines for scaling the geometry and replicate in the laboratory the flight diffraction pattern as produced by the whole solar disk and a flight occulter but leaves the conclusion on the occulter scale law somehow unjustified. This paper provides the numerical support for validating that conclusion and presents the first-ever simulation of the diffraction behind an occulter with an optimized shape along the optical axis with the solar disk as a source. This paper, together with Opt. Lett.41, 757 (2016)OPLEDP0146-959210.1364/OL.41.000757, aims at constituting a complete guide for scaling the coronagraphs’ geometry.

In this paper, an optical phased array (OPA) with wide beam steering angle and low side-lobe level is designed based on the hybrid approach of particle swarm optimization (PSO) and convex optimization (CVX). The optimization process is divided into two steps. First, the antenna spacing distribution of the OPA is designed to obtain a wide beam steering range by using a PSO algorithm. Second, based on the antenna spacing distribution obtained in the previous step, the CVX algorithm is used to obtain the excitation amplitude and phase distribution of the OPA under different beam steering angles. By using this approach, we design an OPA with 1024 antennas. The beam steering range of the OPA is ±60° and the side-lobe level is reduced to −24.65?dB.

Integrated optical systems based on lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) have attracted the interest of researchers. Recently, erbium-doped LNOI lasers have been realized. However, the reported lasers have a relatively lower conversion efficiency and only operate in the 1550?nm band. In this paper, we demonstrate an LNOI laser operating in the 1060?nm band based on a high Q factor ytterbium-doped LNOI microdisk cavity. The threshold and the conversion efficiency of the laser are 21.19?µW and 1.36%, respectively. To our knowledge, the conversion efficiency is the highest among the reported rare-earth-doped LNOI lasers. This research extends the operating band of LNOI lasers and shows the potential in realizing high-power LNOI lasers.

Photoacoustic (PA) transducers are an attractive method of producing high-amplitude, high-frequency, broad-bandwidth ultrasound signals with excellent immunity to electromagnetic interference, when compared with their traditional electroacoustic counterparts. However, the lack of effective control over the spatial sound field prohibits PA transducer technology from further widespread application. This paper presents the first, to the best of our knowledge, experimental study on the dynamic spatial ultrasound modulation strategy for the use of PA transducers, in which a novel PA transducer element is designed. This consists of a suspended compound PA conversion film, whose backing condition can be switched between air and glass through pneumatic actuation to create destructive and constructive acoustic wave interference, respectively. As a result, nearly an order of magnitude contrast in the output acoustic amplitude can be obtained by switching the device’s backing condition given the same laser excitation, thus achieving a binary amplitude tuning. Furthermore, a linear PA transducer array consisting of three independently controllable elements is used for a proof-of-concept demonstration of the dynamic spatial sound field manipulation. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first time that such a unique capability has been successfully applied to PA transducer technology.

Two-photon microscopy (TPM) has provided critical in situ and in vivo information in biomedical studies due to its high resolution, intrinsic optical sectioning, and deep penetration. However, its relatively small field of view (FOV), which is usually determined by objectives, restricts its wide application. In this paper, we propose a segment-scanning sensorless adaptive optics method to extend the FOV and achieve high-resolution and large-FOV two-photon imaging. We demonstrated the proposed method by imaging fluorescent beads, cerebral nerve cells of mouse brain slices, and cerebral vasculature and microglia of live mice. The method extended the FOV of a commercial objective from 1.8 to 3.46 mm while maintaining a lateral resolution of 840 nm and high signal-to-noise ratio. Our technology is compatible with a standard TPM and can be used for large-scale biological exploration.

The intriguing analogy between quantum physics and optics has inspired the design of unconventional integrated photonics devices. In this paper, we numerically demonstrate a broadband integrated polarization beam splitter (PBS) by implementing the stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) technique in a three-waveguide plasmonic system. Our proposed PBS exhibits >250 nm transverse-magnetic (TM) bandwidth with <−40 dB extinction and >150 nm transverse-electric (TE) bandwidth with <−20 dB extinction, covering the entire S-, C-, and L-bands and part of the E-band. Moreover, near-lossless light transfer is achieved in our system despite the incorporation of a plasmonic hybrid waveguide because of the unique loss mitigating feature of the STIRAP scheme. Through this approach, various broadband integrated devices that were previously impossible can be realized, which will allow innovation in integrated optics.

Interferometric fiber optic gyroscopes are widely used in spacecraft, navigation, and autopilot and missile systems due to their high accuracy and fast speed. However, the dynamic measurement range is generally limited to a small value. In this paper, an angular velocity measurement system based on a dual-comb Sagnac interferometer is proposed. The theoretical dynamic range can reach the order of 10^8 deg/s, which is remarkably superior to that of the conventional fiber optic gyroscopes. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a dual-comb-based passive fiber optic gyroscope system, offering an attractive tool for measuring angular velocity with large dynamic range.

This paper introduces a fiber-optic microelectromechanical system (MEMS) seismic-grade accelerometer that is fabricated by bulk silicon processing using photoresist/silicon dioxide composite masking technology. The proposed sensor is a silicon flexure accelerometer whose displacement transduction system employs a light intensity detection method based on Fabry–Perot interference (FPI). The FPI cavity is formed between the end surface of the cleaved optical fiber and the gold-surfaced sidewall of the proof mass. The proposed MEMS accelerometer is fabricated by one-step silicon deep reactive ion etching with different depths using the composite mask, among which photoresist is used as the etching-defining mask for patterning the etching area while silicon dioxide is used as the depth-defining mask. Noise evaluation experiment results reveal that the overall noise floor of the fiber-optic MEMS accelerometer is 2.4 ng/H z at 10 Hz with a sensitivity of 3165 V/g, which is lower than that of most reported micromachined optical accelerometers, and the displacement noise floor of the optical displacement transduction system is 208 fm/H z at 10 Hz. Therefore, the proposed MEMS accelerometer is promising for use in high-performance seismic exploration applications.

The in-plane orientation-dependent electrical and optical properties of two-dimensional (2D) anisotropic materials attract significant attention because of the intriguing underlying physics. However, this feature limits their further development in polarization-independent applications such as refractive index sensors and light absorbers. In this paper, polarization-independent optical properties of black phosphorous (BP) metadevices are achieved by the design of a single-layer pattern of 2D anisotropic material. Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation results indicate that the absorption spectrum remains unchanged as the polarization angle of the incident light varies from 0° to 360°. The performance of the BP metadevices when used as refractive index sensors is also studied. The results show that the polarization-independent BP sensors exhibit high sensitivity and figures of merit (FOMs). This work opens up the possibility of fabricating optically polarization-independent devices based on a single-layer pattern of 2D anisotropic material.

In this paper, we propose and experiment with a dual-functional system that can simultaneously implement vector signal generation and radar detection based on frequency quadrupling. In the experimental demonstration, a generated W-band quadrature-phase-shift-keying (QPSK) vector signal is transmitted wirelessly over 1 m with a bit-error rate (BER) below 3.8?×?10^−3. A radar working in the W band is investigated with a range resolution of 0.94 cm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that simultaneous QPSK vector signal generation and radar detection in the W band has been realized.

In this paper, the inscription of 2-mm-long fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) on benzyl dimethyl ketal (BDK)-doped poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) optical fibers by means of a femtosecond laser and a point-by-point FBG inscription technique is reported. The highest reflectivity of approximately 99% is obtained with a pulse energy of 68.5?nJ, showing a large refractive index modulation amplitude of 7.2 × 10^−4. Afterwards, grating stabilities at room and higher temperatures of up to 80°C are investigated.

Strong light–matter coupling manifested by Rabi splitting has drawn considerable interest owing to its fundamental significance for impressive interaction enhancement in the fields of ultrafast active plasmonic devices and quantum information. In this paper, we investigate the coherent optical properties of a plasmonic system consisting of periodic metal nanoparticle arrays covered by a WS_2 thin film of atomic layer thickness. The coupling factor, energy splitting, and temporal dynamics of this coherent coupling phenomenon are quantitatively revealed by finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation and a full quantum mechanical model proves that the exciton behavior of the fermionic quantum emitter WS_2 is carefully modulated by bosonic surface lattice resonances. This work may pave the way for coherent modulation of polariton and plasmon devices and can potentially open up diverse exciting possibilities like nanoscale light sources, single-photon emitters, and all-optical transistors.

In this paper, we propose a high-security orthogonal chirped division multiplexing passive optical network (OCDM-PON) based on three-dimensional (3D) encryption, including the encryption of bitstream, constellation, and subcarriers. Cascaded fractional-order chaotic mapping (CFCM) is used to generate three masking factors to achieve ultra-high-security encryption in three different dimensions. Logistic mapping is used to control the order of the scheme, which effectively increases the key space to 10^152 and improves the security performance of the system. The experiment proves the feasibility of the encryption scheme on OCDM after 16 orthogonal amplitude modulation (16QAM). The encrypted 16QAM-OCDM signal transmits data at a rate of 56 Gb/s on a 2-km 7-core optical fiber, and simultaneously transmits the 16QAM orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal under the same conditions. It is shown that OCDM-PON is 1.3 dB higher than OFDM-PON in terms of receiver sensitivity when the bit error rate (BER) is 10^−3.

Temporal boundary value problems (TBVPs) provide the foundation for analyzing electromagnetic wave propagation in time-varying media. In this paper, we point out that TBVPs fall into the category of unbounded initial value problems, which have traveling wave solutions. By dividing the entire time frame into several subdomains and applying the d’Alembert formula, the transient expressions for waves propagating through temporal boundaries can be evaluated analytically. Moreover, unlike their spatial analogs, TBVPs are subject to causality. Therefore, the resulting analytical transient solutions resulting from the d’Alembert formula are unique to temporal systems.

Self-accelerating optical Airy beams present attractive characteristics such as self-bending and non-diffraction, which have rendered this field a research hotspot in recent years. In this paper, the desired phase changes of the unit cell structure for the transmitted cross-polarized wave can be realized by modifying the rotation angle of the unit cell, while the amplitude can be modulated by changing the inner diameter R of the double layer split-ring resonator (SRR). As such, the amplitude and phase modulations can be performed simultaneously and independently to achieve the desired transmitted wave envelope. Furthermore, a novel, to the best of our knowledge, strategy of 2D Airy beam deflection control is also presented by simultaneously modifying the phase and amplitude of the envelope of the transmitted beam, and its feasibility is theoretically and experimentally demonstrated. Our proposed designs suggest high application potentials in the fields of optical particle manipulation, controllable wireless energy transmission, and complex terrain exploration.

In this work, we present a panoramic digital holographic system for the first time capable of obtaining 3D information of a quasi-cylindrical object by using a conical mirror. The proposed panoramic digital holographic system is able to scan the entire surface of the object to determine the amplitude and phase simultaneously. This paper demonstrates the feasibility of analyzing quasi-cylindrical objects in a short time (0.5 s) with a single camera and a minimum number of optical components. In addition, it can be applied to determine not only topographic measurement of the cylindrical surface but also measurements of radial deformations. Experimental results are presented at different magnifications, thus illustrating its capabilities and versatility.

This paper proposes a lensless phase retrieval method based on deep learning (DL) used in holographic data storage. By training an end-to-end convolutional neural network between the phase-encoded data pages and the corresponding near-field diffraction intensity images, the new unknown phase data page can be predicted directly from the intensity image by the network model without any iterations. The DL-based phase retrieval method has a higher storage density, lower bit-error-rate (BER), and higher data transfer rate compared to traditional iterative methods. The retrieval optical system is simple, stable, and robust to environment fluctuations which is suitable for holographic data storage. Besides, we studied and demonstrated that the DL method has a good suppression effect on the dynamic noise of the holographic data storage system.

In this paper, we provide an experimental proof-of-concept of this dynamic three-dimensional (3D) current manipulation through a 3D-printed reconfigurable meta-radiator with periodically slotted current elements. By utilizing the working frequency and the mechanical configuration comprehensively, the radiation pattern can be switched among 12 states. Inspired by maximum likelihood method in digital communications, a robustness-analysis method is proposed to evaluate the potential error ratio between ideal cases and practice. Our work provides a previously unidentified model for next-generation information distribution and terahertz-infrared wireless communications.

In this paper, the generation of additive red-green-blue (RGB) colors in reflectance mode with near unity amplitude is demonstrated. For this purpose, a multilayer structure made of metal–insulator–metal–semiconductor–insulator stacks is designed to achieve >0.9 reflection peaks with full-width-at-half-maximum values <0.3λ_peak. The proposed design also shows near zero reflection in off-resonance spectral ranges, and this, in turn, leads to high color purity. The optimized designs are fabricated, and simulation and theoretical results are verified with characterization findings. This work demonstrates the potential of multilayer tandem cavity designs in the realization of lithography-free large-scale compatible functional optical coatings.

This paper describes, to our knowledge, the first demonstration of high performance tilt locking, a method of stabilizing laser frequency to an optical reference cavity using a spatial-mode readout technique. The experiment utilized a traveling wave cavity with a finesse of approximately 10,000, housed in a thermally controlled vacuum chamber. The tilt locking method in a double pass configuration has promising performance in the 100 µHz–1 Hz band, including surpassing the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) Follow-On laser ranging interferometer requirement. Tilt locking offers a number of benefits such as high sensitivity, low cost, and simple implementation and therefore should be considered for future applications requiring high performance laser locking, such as future laser-based satellite geodesy missions and the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna.

Plasmonic structures are extremely attractive for the light flow manipulation. In turn, the spectrum of the plasmon excitations can be controlled by external magnetic field, thus giving rise to magnetoplasmonics. However, in the case of traditional magnetoplasmonic structures, the enhancement of magneto-optical (MO) effects is often accompanied by the transmission damp, which constricts the area of their applications. This paper examines resonant optical effects in composite structures based on artificial opal films covered by a thin cobalt layer, which forms a 2D hexagonal lattice of nanoholes in the metal film. Such periodic structure exhibits surface plasmon polariton-assisted extraordinary transmission along with the increase of odd in magnetization intensity magnetooptical effect in the Voigt geometry. Local field enhancement accompanying the surface plasmon polaritons excitation in composite Co/opal structure provides a distinct enhancement of the magnetization-induced second harmonic generation (SHG) and relevant MO effects at the SHG wavelength that appear as Fano-type resonances. High transmission along with resonantly-high MO effects make Co/opal films promising in plasmonic applications.

A special open-cavity Mach–Zehnder salinity sensor is presented and verified in this Letter, which has obvious advantages in salinity sensitivity and loss. The open-cavity structure is composed of a short section of etched double-side hole fiber spliced between a pair of multimode fibers and connected in series between a pair of single-mode fibers, which is the SMF-MMF-etched DSHF-MMF-SMF structure proposed in the paper. According to the experiment results, when the cavity length is about 100 µm, the salinity sensitivity of the sensing probe can reach 2 nm/‰, and its refractive index (RI) sensitivity can be more than 10,000 nm/RIU, while having a low loss of ${-}{15}\;{\rm dB}$ and a detection limit of 0.23‰. Based on its characteristics, the sensor is a prospective online monitor of ocean salinity. At the same time, it also provides a low-cost way to construct an open cavity instead of femtosecond inscribing.

This paper analytically and numerically investigates misalignment and mode-mismatch-induced power coupling coefficients and losses as a function of Hermite–Gauss (HG) mode order. We show that higher-order HG modes are more susceptible to beam perturbations when, for example, coupling into optical cavities: the misalignment and mode-mismatch-induced power coupling losses scale linearly and quadratically with respect to the mode indices, respectively. As a result, the mode-mismatch tolerance for the ${{\rm HG}_{3,3}}$ mode is reduced to a factor of 0.28 relative to the currently used ${{\rm HG}_{0,0}}$ mode. This is a potential hurdle to using higher-order modes to reduce thermal noise in future gravitational-wave detectors.

Direct generation of ultrashort few-optical-cycle pulses in various wavelength regions has attracted great attention in recent decades. In this paper, generation of less than five-optical-cycle pulses from a Kerr-lens mode-locked ${\rm Yb}{:}{\rm CaYAlO}_4$ laser is demonstrated. Pumped by a 976 nm fiber laser, stable near-Fourier-transform-limited ultrashort soliton pulses centered around 1080 nm with a repetition rate of ${\sim}{113.7}\;{\rm MHz}$ were obtained. The obtained pulses have a pulse duration as short as 17 fs if a ${{\rm Sech}^2}$-shaped pulse profile is assumed, corresponding to about 4.68 optical cycles. To the best of our knowledge, this is the shortest pulse directly generated from mode-locked rare-earth-doped solid-state oscillators.
