Most of the current predictions of the radiative properties of microalgae use the homogeneous sphere approximation based on the Mie scattering theory, and the refractive indices of the model were regarded as fixed values. Using the recently measured optical constants of various microalgae components, we propose a spherical heterogeneous model for spherical microalgae. The optical constants of the heterogeneous model were characterized by the measured optical constants of microalgae components for the first time. The radiative properties of the heterogeneous sphere were calculated using the T-matrix method and were well verified by measurements. It shows that the internal microstructure has a more significant effect on scattering cross-section and scattering phase function than absorption cross-section. Compared with the traditional homogeneous models selected with fixed values as refractive index, the calculation accuracy of scattering cross-section of the heterogeneous model improved by 15%-150%. The scattering phase function of the heterogeneous sphere approximation agreed better with measurements than the homogeneous models due to the more detailed description of the internal microstructure. It can be concluded that considering the internal microstructure of microalgae and characterizing the microstructure of the model by the optical constants of the microalgae components helps to reduce the error caused by the simplification of the actual cell.

Ferroelectric BaTiO3 with an electric-field-switchable spontaneous polarization has attracted wide attention in photovoltaic applications due to its efficient charge separation for photoexcitation. The evolution of its optical properties with rising temperature especially across the ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition is critical to peer into the fundamental photoexcitation process. Herein, by combining spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements with first-principles calculations, we obtain the UV-Vis dielectric functions of perovskite BaTiO3 at temperatures varying from 300 to 873 K and provide the atomistic insights into the temperature-driven ferroelectric-paraelectric (tetragonal-cubic) structural evolution. The main adsorption peak in dielectric function of BaTiO3 is reduced by 20.6% in magnitude and redshifted as temperature increases. The Urbach tail shows an unconventional temperature-dependent behavior due to the microcrystalline disorder across the ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition and the decreased surface roughness at around 405 K. From ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, the redshifted dielectric function of ferroelectric BaTiO3 coincidences with the reduction of the spontaneous polarization at elevated temperature. Moreover, a positive (negative) external electric field is applied which can modulate the dielectric function of ferroelectric BaTiO3 blueshift (redshift) with a larger (smaller) spontaneous polarization since it drives the ferroelectric further away from (closer to) the paraelectric structure. This work sheds light on the temperature-dependent optical properties of BaTiO3 and provides data support for advancing its ferroelectric photovoltaic applications.

It is difficult for single-layer metal metasurfaces to excite in-plane component of magnetic dipole moment, so achieving giant intrinsic optical chirality remains challenging. Fortunately, displacement current in dielectric metasurfaces can form the in-plane magnetic moment which is not orthogonal to the electric dipole moment and forms intrinsic chirality. Here, we show a lossless all-silicon metasurface which achieves giant intrinsic chirality in terahertz band. The leaky waveguide mode in the chiral silicon pillars simultaneously excite the in-plane electric and magnetic dipole moments, which triggers the spin-selected backward electromagnetic radiation, and then realizes the chiral response. The theoretical value of circular dichroism in the transmission spectrum reaches 69.4%, and the measured one is 43%. Based on the photoconductivity effect of the silicon metasurface, we demonstrate optical modulation of the intrinsic chirality using near-infrared continuous wave. In addition, by arranging the two kinds of meta-atoms which are enantiomers, we show the spin-dependent and tunable near-field image display. This simple-prepared all-silicon metasurface provides a new idea for the design of terahertz chiral meta-devices, and it is expected to be applied in the fields of terahertz polarization imaging or spectral detection.

Room-temperature polariton lasing is achieved in GaN microrods grown by metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy. We demonstrate a large Rabi splitting (Ω = 2g0) up to 162 meV, exceeding the results from both the state-of-the-art nitride-based planar microcavities and previously reported GaN microrods. An ultra-low threshold of 1.8 kW/cm2 is observed by power-dependent photoluminescence spectra, with the linewidth down to 1.31 meV and the blue shift up to 17.8 meV. This large Rabi splitting distinguishes our coherent light emission from a conventional photon lasing, which strongly supports the preparation of coherent light sources in integrated optical circuits and the study of exciting phenomena in macroscopic quantum states.

An actively tunable broadband terahertz absorber is numerically demonstrated, which consists of four identical vanadium dioxide (VO2) square loops and a metal ground plane separated by a dielectric spacer. Simulation results show that an excellent absorption bandwidth of 90% terahertz absorptance reaches as wide as 2.45 THz from 1.85 to 4.3 THz under normal incidence. By changing the conductivity of VO2, an approximately perfect amplitude modulation is realized with the absorptance dynamically tuned from 4% to 100%. This absorption performance is greatly improved compared with previously reported VO2-based absorbers. The physical mechanisms of a single absorption band and the perfect absorption are elucidated by the wave-interference theory and the impedance matching theory, respectively. Field distributions are further discussed to explore the physical origin of this absorber. In addition, it also has the advantages of polarization insensitivity and wide-angle absorption. The proposed absorber may have many promising applications in the terahertz range such as modulator, sensor, cloaking and optic-electro switches.

In this paper, we present an active controllable terahertz absorber with dual broadband characteristics, comprised by two diagonal identical patterns of vanadium dioxide in the top layer of the classical three-layer structure of metamaterial perfect absorbers. Simulation results show that two bandwidths of 80% absorption are 0.88 THz and 0.77 THz from 0.56 to 1.44 THz and 2.88 to 3.65 THz, respectively. By using thermal control to change the conductivity of the vanadium dioxide, absorptance can be continuously adjusted from 20% to 90%. The impedance matching theory is introduced to analyze and elucidate the physical mechanism of the perfect absorption. Field analyses are further investigated to get more insight into the physical origin of the dual broadband absorption. In addition, incident polarization insensitivity and wide-angle absorption are also demonstrated. The proposed absorber promises diverse applications in terahertz regime, such as imaging, modulating, sensing and cloaking.

Developing micro/nanoscale wire lasers with single-mode operation and lasing wavelength modulation is essential for realizing their practical applications such as optical communication and saturated spectroscopy. We demonstrated, to the best of our knowledge, the first tunable single-mode microrod laser without complicated micro/nano-manipulation and without additional environmental requirement. In this letter, we realized the wavelength modulation in a single semiconductor microrod simply and directly by changing the axial location of the active region, owing that the active region position plays a key role in determining the lasing mode of microrod lasers. Based on this feature, we proposed a pair of asymmetrical distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs) with specific spectral selectivity to be induced in a GaN microrod to realize tunable single-mode lasing in a single semiconductor microrod. By using this method, lasing wavelength can be modulated from 369.5 to 375.7 nm flexibly and repeatedly in a 45 μm GaN microrod with the change of the excitation source position. This approach demonstrates a big application potential in numerous fields consisting of optical telecommunication and environmental monitoring.

Incorporating photosensitive material into structured metamaterials explores opportunities for dynamical operation across the terahertz functional devices, enabled by the efficient interaction between light and matter. In this work, the CsPbBr3 quantum dots are incorporated into the metasurfaces, realizing the active control of the plasmon-induced transparency. In the experiment, the normalized modulation depth of transparency effect is up to 74%. Rigorous numerical and theoretical simulations verify that the variation of dynamic physical process is associated with the charge storage capacity in the capacitive metasurface. An observed phase advance and group delay indicate the hybrid metasurface is useful for slow light application. In addition, the simple process provides a convenient way for the development of terahertz functional devices.

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a continuously tunable all-optical microwave filter using a silicon opto-mechanical microring resonator (MRR). By finely adjusting the pump light with submilliwatt power level, transmission spectrum of the MRR could be continuously shifted based on the nonlinear effects, including the opto-mechanical effect and thermo-optic effect. Therefore, in the case of optical single sideband (OSSB) modulation, the frequency intervals between the optical carrier (near one MRR resonance) and the corresponding resonance could be flexibly manipulated, which is the critical factor to achieve continuously tunable microwave photonic filter (MPF). In the experiment, the central frequency of the MPF could be continuously tuned from 6 GHz to 19 GHz with the pump power lower than -2.5 dBm. The proposed opto-mechanical device is competent to process microwave signals with dominant advantages, such as compact footprint, all-optical control and low power consumption. In the future, using light to control light, the opto-mechanical structure on silicon platforms might have many other potential applications in microwave systems, such as microwave switch.

The lasing behaviors of dye-doped cholesteric liquid crystal (DDCLC) microshells fabricated with silica-glass-microsphere coated DDCLCs were examined. Lasing characteristics were studied in a carrier medium with different refractive indices. The lasing in spherical cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) was attributed to two mechanisms, photonic band-gap (PBG) lasing and whispering-gallery modes (WGMs), which can independently exist by varying the chiral agent concentration and pumping energy. It was also found that DDCLC microshells can function as highly sensitive thermal sensors, with a temperature sensitivity of 0.982 nm °C−1 in PBG modes and 0.156 nm °C−1 in WGMs.

Developing micro/nanoscale wire (MNW) lasers with single-mode operation is critical for realizing their practical applications, however, most reported MNW lasers operate in multi-modes, because lacking of mode selection mechanisms. In this work, a simple and direct way to realize stable, single-mode MNW laser without complicated micro/nano-manipulation was demonstrated. We have found and proved that the position of the active region plays a key role in determining the lasing mode of MNW lasers, which can be used to realize single-mode lasing in MNWs. We propose self-selection mechanism of Fabry-Perot MNW cavity for single-mode lasing due to location-dependent field distribution in MNWs, which is characterized by suppressing the multiple longitudinal mode oscillation of the MNW laser. GaN MNW lasers with different lengths and diameters have been fabricated, verifying the self-selection mechanism of the cavity experimentally. Moreover, we demonstrate the single-mode, room temperature optically pumped MNW laser with an extremely low threshold (~40 kW/cm2) in condition of appropriate cavity length, opening an opportunity to realize stable single-mode, low-threshold MNW laser for easy integration in constructing micro/nanoscale photonic and optoelectronic circuits and devices.
