Abstract

We theoretically investigate the fluorescence enhancement of a molecule placed in a variable (4 – 20 nm) gap of a plasmonic dimer, with different dye molecules as well as different nanoparticle geometries, using a fully vectorial three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (3D FDTD) method. This work extends previous studies on molecular fluorescence in the vicinity of metal interfaces and single nanoparticles and shows how the radiative emission of a molecule can be further enhanced by engineering the geometry of a plasmonic structure. Through the use of rigorous 3D FDTD calculations, in conjunction with analytic guidance based on temporal coupled-mode (TCM) theory, we develop a design procedure for antennae assemblies that is useful both for general understanding of molecule-metal structure interaction and experimental efforts in plasmon-enhanced molecular spectroscopy.

24. Mode multicasting without parasitic wavelength conversion.

Abstract

Optical multicasting, which involves delivering an input signal to multiple different channels simultaneously, is a key function to improve network performance. By exploiting individual spatial modes as independent channels, mode-division-multiplexing (MDM) can solve the capacity crunch of traditional standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) transmission system. In order to realize mode multicasting with high flexibility in future hybrid wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) and MDM networks, we propose a mode multicasting scheme without parasitic wavelength conversion, based on the inter-modal four-wave mixing (FWM) arising in the few-mode fiber (FMF). The operation mechanism including nonlinear phase shift for efficient mode multicasting is analytically identified. Then, based on the derived operation condition, we numerically investigate the impact of the dual-pump power and the FMF length on the performance of mode multicasting. By properly setting the pump wavelength and the dual-pump power, mode multicasting performance, in terms of mode multicasting efficiency, 3-dB bandwidth, and destination wavelength, can be tuned according to various application scenarios. After the performance optimization, mode multicasting of 25-Gbaud and 100-Gbaud 16-quadratic-amplitude modulation (16-QAM) signals is numerically demonstrated. The proposed reconfigurable mode multicasting is promising for future WDM-MDM networks.

25. Wideband low confinement loss anti-resonant hollow core fiber with nested U-shape tube.

Abstract

We propose a nested U-shape tube anti-resonant hollow core fiber (UARF) that can effectively reduce the confinement loss (CL) as well as the loss oscillations. The key parameters of UARF have been optimized via numerical analysis. Simulation results show that the CL of proposed UARF is lower than 0.01dB/km over a 550 nm operational bandwidth range from 1.3 µm to 1.85 µm. This CL is nearly one order of magnitude lower than the nested anti-resonant nodeless fiber (NANF). Moreover, the loss ratio between higher-order modes to the fundamental mode is verified to be more than 100,000 over a ultrawide bandwidth of 1000 nm, which indicates its excellent single mode performance. The tolerance towards the structure deformation of UARF has been evaluated for the purpose of practical fiber fabrication. Thus, the proposed UARF has potential application in large capacity data transmission, nonlinear optics, gas sensing and so on.
