International audience; We have demonstrated multi-wavelength generation in a nonlinear photonic crystals of lithium tantalate. The optical parametric generation leads to second harmonic generation, sum-frequency generation and other frequency conversion in a cascade process. These conversions are assisted by all the optical nonlinear process involving χ (2) and achieved by satisfying the quasi-phase matching conditions.

We report a new simple and inexpensive sub-micrometer two dimensional patterning technique. This technique combines a use of a photomask featured with self-organized particles in the micro- to nano-meter size range and a photoresist-covered substrate. The photomask was prepared by depositing monodispersed silicon dioxide (SiO(2))- or polystyrene- spheres on a quartz substrate to form a close-packed pattern. The patterning technique can be realized in two configurations: a hard-contact mode or a soft-contact mode. In the first configuration, each sphere acts as a micro ball-lens that focuses light and exposes the photoresist underneath the sphere. The developed pattern therefore reproduces exactly the same spatial arrangement as the close-packed spheres but with a feature size of developed hole smaller than the diameter of the sphere. In the soft-contact mode, an air gap of few micrometers thick is introduced between the 2D array of self-organized spheres and the photoresist-covered substrate. In this case, a phase mask behavior is obtained which results in an exposure area with a lattice period being half of the sphere diameter. A 2D lattice structure with period and feature size of a developed hole as small as 750 nm and 420 nm, respectively, was realized in this configuration. We further applied this technique to host the deposition of organic films into the 2D nanostructure and demonstrated the realization of green and red nano-structured OLEDs.

A broadband green light source was demonstrated using a tandem-poled lithium niobate (TPLN) crystal. The measured wavelength and temperature bandwidth were 6.5 nm and 100 degrees C, respectively, spectral bandwidth was 36 times broader than the periodically poled case. Although the conversion efficiency was smaller than in the periodic case, the TPLN device had a good figure of merit owing to the extremely large bandwidth for wavelength and temperature. The developed broadband green light source exhibited speckle noise approximately one-seventh of that in the conventional approach for a laser projection display. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America

We report on a ceramic Yb:LuAG thin-disk laser in continuous wave operation. The Yb:LuAG ceramic was fabricated using solid-state reactive sintering method. In multi-mode operation in open-air, an output power of 1.74 kW with an optical-to-optical efficiency of 65.0% and slope efficiency of 71.2% was obtained. In near-fundamental mode operation we obtained an output power of 1.29 kW and an average beam quality factor of M2 = 1.44 with an optical-to-optical efficiency of 48.2%. The near-fundamental mode result was realized with a simple evacuated, stable resonator cavity with just the thin-disk gain medium and output coupler. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is not only the first time more than 1 kW has been demonstrated from a ceramic Yb:LuAG medium, but this is also currently the brightest continuous wave Yb-doped ceramic laser.

In this work, we report the investigation of a planar waveguide in a 2D periodically-poled lithium niobate (PPLN). The waveguide is fabricated by helium (He(+)) implantation at 2 MeV and a fluence of 1.5 x 10(16) ions/cm(2). Second harmonic generation (SHG) at 532 nm using a Q-switched laser and a CW laser diode at 1064 nm, was measured as a function of angular distribution and temperature. The experimental results show higher gain in SHG conversion efficiency in the waveguide than in the bulk 2D PPLN. In particular, SHGs from 2D reciprocal lattice vectors (RLV) are observed and studied.

A practical process to fabricate InGaN/GaN multiple quantum well light emitting diodes (LEDs) with a self-organized nanorod structure is demonstrated. The nanorod array is realized by using nature lithography of surface patterned silica spheres followed by dry etching. A layer of spin-on-glass (SOG), which intervening the rod spacing, serves the purpose of electric isolation to each of the parallel nanorod LED units. The electroluminescence peak wavelengths of the nanorod LEDs nearly remain as constant for an injection current level between 25mA and 100mA, which indicates that the quantum confined stark effect is suppressed in the nanorod devices. Furthermore, from the Raman light scattering analysis we identify a strain relaxation mechanism for lattice mismatch layers in the nanostructure.
