A self-mixing interferometer combined with the photothermal spectroscopy is utilized as a remarkable sensor for highly sensitive trace detection, featuring the beneficial property of a He-Ne laser with back-mounted photodiode, to the best of our knowledge, acting as an excitation laser, also as a probe laser, and even more, as a detector. Utilizing the novel implementation of the photothermal self-mixing (PTSM) interferometer with an external cavity modulation, the concentration of the sample is directly measured by the PTSM parameter extracted from the PTSM signal. The metrological qualities of the PTSM interferometer were investigated by methylene blue trace detection. For a low excitation power of 5 mW, a 7.7 nM of the limit of detection was achieved with a relative standard deviation of ∼3%. The compact and simple structure with high sensitivity has guiding significance to a robust analytical tool for the analysis of photosensitive compounds and in the detection of aquatic product hazards in aquaculture.

Insufficient harvest of solar light energy is one of the obstacles for current photovoltaic devices to achieve high performance. Especially, conventional organic/inorganic hybrid solar cells (HSCs) based on PTB7 as p-type semiconductor can only utilize 400-800 nm solar spectrum. One effective strategy to overcome this obstacle is the introduction of up-conversion nanophosphors (NPs), in the virtue of utilizing the near infrared region (NIR) of solar radiation. Up-conversion can convert low-energy photons to high-energy ones through multi-photon processes, by which the solar spectrum is tailored to well match the absorptive domain of the absorber. Herein we incorporate erbium-ytterbium co-doped gadolinium molybdate (Gdsub2/sub(MoOsub4/sub)sub3/sub, GMO), denoted as GMO:Yb/Er, into TiOsub2/subacceptor film in HSCs to enhance the light harvest. Here Ersup3+/supacts as activator while Yb-MoOsub4/subsup2-/supis the joint sensitizer. Facts proved that the GMO:Yb/Er single crystal NPs are capable of turning NIR photons to visible photons that can be easily captured by PTB7. Studies on time-resolved photoluminescence demonstrate that electron transfer rate at the interface increases sharply from 0.65 to 1.42 × 10sup9/supssup-1/sup. As a result, the photoelectric conversion efficiency of the GMO:Yb/Er doped TiOsub2/sub/PTB7 HSCs reach 3.67%, which is increased by around 25% compared to their neat PTB7/TiOsub2/subcounterparts (2.94%). This work may open a hopeful way to take the advantage of those conversional rare-earth ion doped oxides that function in tailoring solar light spectrum for optoelectronic applications.

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel multimode ultra-compact mode (de)multiplexer for highly integrated on-chip mode-division multiplexing systems. This device is composed of a wide divergence angle asymmetric Y-junction based on subwavelength structure and optimized using an inverse design method. The proposed device occupied a footprint of only 2.4 × 3 µm2. The measured insertion loss and crosstalk were less than 1dB and –24 dB from 1530 nm to 1590 nm for both TE0 mode and TE1 mode, respectively. Likewise, a three mode multiplexer is also designed and fabricated with a compact footprint of 3.6 × 4.8 µm2. Furthermore, our scheme could also be expanded to include more modes.

The light-induced magnetization distributions for a high numerical aperture focusing configuration with an azimuthally polarized Bessel-Gaussian beam modulated by optimized vortex binary filters are investigated based on the inverse Faraday effect. It is found that, by adjusting the radii of different rings of the single/ cascaded vortex binary filters, super-long (12λ) and sub-wavelength (0.416λ) longitudinal magnetization chain with single/dual channels can be achieved in the focal region. Such well-behaved magnetization trait is attributed to the mutual effect between the optical polarization singularities of the azimuthally polarized beam and single/cascaded spiral optical elements. In addition, we find that the displacement distance of the longitudinal magnetization chain is proportional to the phase difference between the inner circle and outer ring of the vortex binary filters, thus giving rise to the steerable magnetization chain. It is expected that the research outcomes can be applied in multiple atoms trapping and transport, multilayer magneto-optical data storage, fabrication of magnetic lattices for spin wave operation and development of ultra-compact optomagnetic devices.

Based on the vector diffraction theory and the inverse Faraday effect, we numerically study the light-induced magnetization near the focus of a 4π high numerical aperture focusing configuration under the illumination of two counter- propagating radially polarized hollow Gaussian vortex beams. The simulated results demonstrate that, by selecting higher-order vortex beam modes (e.g. n=4with n - the beam order) and proper truncation parameter (e.g. β=1.75 with β- the ratio of the pupil radius to the incident beam waist), spherical and sub-wavelength longitudinal magnetization can be generated in the vicinity of focus. Such special magnetization feature is attributed to not only the interaction between optical vortices and the radially polarized beams, but also the completely destructive interference of azimuthal components and the constructive interference of the longitudinal component of the two counter-propagating radially polarized vortex beams. This spherical and sub-wavelength longitudinal magnetization distribution may be of interest for applications in all-optical magnetic recording and confocal and magnetic resonance microscopy.
