The Uplink Wavefront Corrector System (UWCS) is a pathfinder instrument to demonstrate the uplink correction by Adaptive Optics techniques; this novel application can be directly usable in two fields: Free-Space Optical Communications and the generation of Laser Guide Stars. A Rayleigh LGS is propagated to the sky while the atmospheric wavefront aberrations are measured by a Shack-Hartmann WFS with 12 x 12 sub-apertures using a Natural Guide Star as a reference. The laser upwards propagation path is then pre-compensated by a 97-actuator deformable mirror. A scoring camera is attached to the finder telescope, next to the main aperture, in order to show the overall result, which is assessed in terms of beam power concentration. Present paper described the design process of the UWCS and its integration and testing in the Optical Ground Station telescope, at Teide Observatory (Spain).

We present a low-cost terahertz wave plate based on form birefringence fabricated using ordinary paper. Measurements of the transfer function of the wave plate between polarizers closely agree with predictions based on the measured complex indices of refraction of the effective medium. For the design frequency, the dependence on wave plate angle also agrees with theory.

An experimental set-up was devised to record the transmission of red and green HeNe lasers through different types of paper. The measured data was compared with data obtained using the Henyey-Greenstein function (often employed in paper optics models to represent the bulk scattering of material samples) and data obtained using an alternative exponentiated cosine function. The comparisons are used to qualitatively assess the degree of fidelity of the bulk scattering approximations provided by both functions.

Segment-edges for extremely large telescopes are critical for observations requiring high contrast and SNR, e.g. detecting exo-planets. In parallel, industrial requirements for edge-control are emerging in several applications. This paper reports on a new approach, where edges are controlled throughout polishing of the entire surface of a part, which has been pre-machined to its final external dimensions. The method deploys compliant bonnets delivering influence functions of variable diameter, complemented by small pitch tools sized to accommodate aspheric mis-fit. We describe results on witness hexagons in preparation for full size prototype segments for the European Extremely Large Telescope, and comment on wider applications of the technology.

International audience; We show that conventional paper can be cut using a 1W laser diode, provided the cutting lines are first traced using a proper ink. The ink should absorb the laser light, and penetrate deep into the paper. An " invisible ink " that is transparent in the visible range and absorbing in the infrared has been successfully tested. The paper is tidily cut. The laser power required to cut the paper is proportional to the displacement speed of the paper. Cutting speeds exceeding 3 cm.s-1 .W-1 have been demonstrated. At higher speeds, the paper is not cut through, but easy-tearable lines and easy-folding lines are obtained. The whole inking and laser cutting process may be integrated into next generations of personal inkjet printers and expand document creation abilities.

A long plasma channel, formed due to the dynamic balance between the nonlinear self-focusing and the plasma defocusing in the propagation of intense femtosecond laser pulses in air, is demonstrated to be able to continuously propel a paper airplane without complicated focusing optics. The maximum coupling coefficient generated by the plasma channel is found to be more than 8.5 dyne/W. In the plasma channel, the detonation wave generation with the air ionization is found to be the propulsive source.

In this paper, we applied the Fourier Transformation as a notion to calculate the orientation of hexagonal graphene domains on Cu substrate. We developed that a hexagon function to describe the diffraction pattern of hexagonal graphene. Hexagonal graphene domains grown on Cu (111) has an average value of orientation surrounding 3° in the frequency domain. For transparent conducting electrode applications, optical and electrical properties of large-area graphene film (2cm(2)) was measured. The results demonstrate that graphene grown on Cu (111) was greater than graphene grown on polycrystalline Cu.

The present work describes a theoretical investigation of the near-field thermal radiation between doped Si plates coated with a monolayer of graphene. It is found that the radiative heat flux between doped Si plates can be either enhanced or suppressed by introducing graphene layer, depending on the Si doping concentration and chemical potential of graphene. Graphene can enhance the heat flux if it matches resonance frequencies of surface plasmon at vacuum-source and vacuum-receiver interfaces. In particular, significant enhancement is achieved when graphene is coated on both surfaces that originally does not support the surface plasmon resonance. The results obtained in this study provide an important guideline into enhancing the near-field thermal radiation between doped Si plates by introducing graphene. (c) 2013 Optical Society of America

We show that reflectivity measurements enable the determination of the thickness of multilayered graphene on a metal substrate. The developed technique is based on comparison of the substrate reflectance with and without graphene and relies on the strong absorbance of graphene and high refractive index contrast. We demonstrate the technique by measuring the thickness of the CVD graphene film grown on a copper substrate.

We report a graphene-based transparent conductive electrode for use in ultraviolet (UV) GaN light emitting diodes (LEDs). A few-layer graphene (FLG) layer was mechanically deposited. UV light at a peak wavelength of 368 nm was successfully emitted by the FLG layer as transparent contact to p-GaN. The emission of UV light through the thin graphene layer was brighter than through the thick graphene layer. The thickness of the graphene layer was characterized by micro-Raman spectroscopy. Our results indicate that this novel graphene-based transparent conductive electrode holds great promise for use in UV optoelectronics for which conventional ITO is less transparent than graphene.

The polarization state of infrared emission from water at large viewing angles is explained mathematically by a polarization-dependent emissivity. To provide polarized emissivity values for a wind-roughened water surface in a convenient format, this electronic paper provides interactive tables and plots of polarized water emissivity for the spectral range of 3-15 microm. The rough surface is modeled as a collection of specular facets with slopes given by a Gaussian distribution. The interactive electronic format provides a tutorial on emission polarization and it allows readers to copy the desired numbers and paste them into their electronic applications without the difficulty of transcribing numbers from printed tables.

Because on-chip integration of light sources cannot be realized effectively now, integrated nanophotonic chips must couple external light to the integrated photonic waveguide with high efficiency. Realizing high efficiency coupling requires a low-loss coupling structure. In this paper, the factors allowing high efficiency coupling to be realized are analyzed theoretically and the coupling between a lensed fiber and a tapered silicon nitride (Si3N4) waveguide is realized experimentally. Because the coupling efficiency of this structure is not ideal in the experiment, a scheme of direct alignment between the lensed fiber and a cantilever waveguide is proposed. Although the scheme offers a very high coupling efficiency in theory, because of the warpage of the waveguide they cannot be directly aligned experimentally. Finally, this paper advances a scheme for the tapered fiber to be directly overlapped onto the Si3N4/SiO2 cantilever. It is found that the coupler maintains an ideal coupling efficiency for wavelength from 1530 nm to 1600 nm, laying a foundation for the integration of nano-photonic devices and optical fibers.

Graded-index optical fiber probes suitable for focusing or collimating the output of an optical fiber at a wavelength of 1.3 µm have become an enabling technology in optical coherence tomography imaging applications for in vivo bioimaging. Such fiber tips however remain uncommon in other photonics applications. This paper provides the first numerical study of graded-index fiber tips covering a broad range of wavelengths spanning from the UV to short-infrared. The wavelength dependency and the influence of probe geometry on performance characteristics such as far-field divergence angle, spot size and working distance are analyzed. The paper yields easily accessible design guidelines for the fabrication of collimating or focusing fiber tips. Fiber collimators have considerable potential for use in free-space systems and could benefit a range of devices such as variable attenuators, dynamic wavelength equalisers and large 3D optical cross-connect switches, whereas focusing fiber tips have applications in high-resolution imaging. In museum lighting, traditional Chinese paintings are the artworks with the highest light sensitivity. They are vulnerable to the color damage to pigments and the mechanical damage to substrates after the irradiation from light sources. As the basis of effective preventive protection, the research on the two lighting quantity indexes of illuminance and annual exposure (illuminance × time) is currently missing. In this study, the halogen lamp was used as the experimental light source to conduct a 1440 h irradiation experiment on the samples of paper and silk substrates under 4 illuminance levels, respectively, and the test of infrared spectrum was carried out on the samples every 240 h. The oxidation index of paper and crystallinity degree of silk were calculated then. Three-dimensional visual curved surface plots of mechanical damage to samples with the change of illuminance and time were established and then fitted into damage evaluation equations, which revealed and described mathematically the mechanical damage law of samples. Through the equations, the recommended values of illuminance and annual exposure for samples could be calculated. Combining the previous researches on pigments, the lighting quantity indexes of traditional Chinese paintings with different combinations of substrates and pigments were proposed.

Light-transport represents the complex interactions of light in a scene. Fast, compressed, and accurate light-transport capture for dynamic scenes is an open challenge in vision and graphics. In this paper, we integrate the classical idea of Lissajous sampling with novel control strategies for dynamic light-transport applications such as relighting water drops and seeing around corners. In particular, this paper introduces an improved Lissajous projector hardware design and discusses calibration and capture for a microelectromechanical (MEMS) mirror-based projector. Further, we show progress towards speeding up the hardware-based Lissajous subsampling for dual light transport frames, and investigate interpolation algorithms for recovering back the missing data. Our captured dynamic light transport results show complex light scattering effects for dense angular sampling, and we also show dual non-line-of-sight (NLoS) capture of dynamic scenes. This work is the first step towards adaptive Lissajous control for dynamic light-transport.

A conventional distributed fiber optic sensing system offers close to linear sensitivity along the fiber length. However gold nanoparticles (NP) have been shown to be able to enhance the contrast ratio to improve the quality of signal detection. The challenge in improving the contrast of reflected signals is to optimise the nanoparticle doping concentration over the densed sensing length to make best use of the distributed fiber sensing hardware. In this paper, light enhancement by spherical gold NPs in the optical fibers was analyzed by considering the size-induced NP refractive index changes. This was achieved by building a new model to relate backscattered light from a gold NP suspension between the optical fiber end tips and backscattered light from gold NPs in the core of the optical fiber. The paper provides a model to determine the optimized sizes and concentrations of NPs for sensing at different desired penetration depths in the optical fiber.

Polarization aberrations exist in almost all astronomical telescopes. Polarization aberrations would bring about asymmetric apodization in the exit pupil, leading to asymmetric PSFs. The shape of PSFs is critical to telescopes that are used to detect weak gravitational lensing (WGL) in the universe. In this paper, polarization aberrations and their connections with PSF ellipticity in an unobscured off-axis space telescope are analyzed. Together with the Jones pupil, cumulative diattenuation and retardance maps of the telescope are obtained via polarization ray tracing. Due to asymmetric apodization caused by polarization aberrations, the ellipticities of all four PSF components are found to be greater than zero. The PSF ellipticity of the telescope over the full FOV is obtained. Results show that polarization aberrations change PSF ellipticity in different degrees at different FOVs. The maximum variance of PSF ellipticity induced by polarization aberrations is 7.5e–3 and the average value is 2.7e–3. In addition, interpolation errors of PSF ellipticity would also be affected by polarization aberrations. It is found that there are 405 FOV points (about 4% of all FOV points involved in the calculations) whose variances of interpolation errors caused by polarization aberrations are greater than 1.4e–4. According to the results shown in this paper, polarization aberrations of telescopes play a significant role in WGL measurements.

Structured light is an optical 3D surface measurement technique with the merits of high speed and high robustness. However, the huge size of traditional digital light processing (DLP) projectors limits its convenience in numerous applications. In this paper, a one-axis MEMS mirror is used as the structured light projector in 3D modeling systems, and has the advantages of small volume and low cost. Limited by the inability to project orthogonal patterns and projection distortion, it is difficult for the one-axis MEMS mirror based 3D modeling system to obtain high accuracy through existing calibration methods. This paper proposed a calibration method for structured light 3D modeling systems that can only project stripes in one direction with projection distortion. A curved surface equation called curved light surface model was proposed to replace the ideal plane equation as the mathematic model of the projected structured light stripes. Experiment results verified that this method can significantly reduce the effect of projection distortion and an accuracy of 0.11 mm was achieved when measuring a standard dumbbell-shaped object with 201.10 mm center-to-center distance.

The rapid development of optoelectronic components has demanded high-speed drilling for alumina ceramic substrate. However, the existing drilling speed cannot meet the demand due to the limitation of conventional laser system and drilling method. In this paper, by adopting a sub-microsecond pulsed thin disk laser that based on a multi-pass pumping module, a laser system with a pulse energy of 37.4 mJ and a peak power of 103.8 kW is developed, which helps us to achieve high processing efficiency. In addition, experimental and theoretical analysis suggest the positive defocusing method can be used to control the hole taper angle, and micro-holes with a hole diameter difference less than 6% is realized, which helps us to achieve high processing quality. Ultimately, it is reported that the drilling speed for micro-holes with a diameter of ∼150 µm reaches 30 holes per second, and for micro-holes with a diameter of ∼100 µm reaches as high as 66 holes per second. The performance of the sub-microsecond pulsed thin disk laser presented in this paper provides a reference in the field of high-speed laser processing.

This paper proposes an electrothermally-actuated circular pyramidal kirigami microscanner with a millimeter-range low-power lens drive for endoscopic biomedical applications. A variation of Japanese origami art, kirigami involves creation of out-of-plane structures by paper cutting and folding. The proposed microscanner is composed of freestanding kirigami film on which the spiral-curved thermal bimorphs are strategically placed. The kirigami microscanner is electrothermally transformed into an out-of-plane circular multistep pyramid by Joule heating. The circular pyramidal kirigami microscanner on a small footprint of 4.5 mm × 4.5 mm was fabricated by microelectromechanical system processes. A large four-step pyramidal actuation was successfully demonstrated, and a large 1.1-mm lens travel range at only 128 mW was achieved.

In this paper, we propose an orientation-induced link-blocked receiver (OLBR) to simultaneously reduce the correlation of the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels and avoid disruptive transmission in visible light communication (VLC) system. The idea of this paper is to combine the adjustable normal vector ideology of an angle diversity receiver with the channel correlation reduction of a link-blocked receiver. The proposed OLBR is designed to intentionally block specific links while enhancing other links between light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and photodiodes (PDs). Besides, the proposed receiver can perform well in many locations in the room whereas conventional receivers fail to receive signals from at least one LED due to unwanted line-of-sight (LOS) link blocking. Moreover, an algorithm is proposed to iteratively solve the optimization problem, taking the normal vectors of the PDs into consideration. The simulation results show that the proposed OLBR can achieve a performance gain in comparison with previous receiver design schemes for different scenarios, especially in the locations that are far from LEDs.

Time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) is commonly used to track dynamics in a broad range of materials. Thus, the search for simplification of the acquisition of PL kinetics attracts continuous attention. This paper presents a new robust and straightforward approach to the measurement of PL decay, which is based on randomly fluctuating excitation intensity. The random excitation waveform is attained by using laser speckles generated on a rotating diffuser. Owing to this, the presented technique is able to utilize any coherent excitation source without the necessity to generate short pulses or to controllably modulate the light. PL decay can be computationally reconstructed from the Fourier image of the PL trace. The paper demonstrates the performance of the method, which is able to acquire sub-microsecond dynamics as the impulse response function reaches 300 ns. The reconstructed PL decays were compared to streak camera measurements to verify the method. Finally, potential limitations and applications of the technique are discussed.

In this paper we propose feasibility demonstration of twin-field quantum key ditribution system based on multi-mode weak coherent phase-coded states. Their utilization provides indisputable advantages described in the paper. We also provide the detailed description of nontrivial interference scheme for those states and derive detection and quantum bit error rates. Since we propose the feasibility scheme we present in this paper only asymptotic secure key estimation and show that in principle it can beat well-known fundamental limit of repeaterless quantum communications , i.e., the secret key capacity of the lossy communication channel. Also we present here the experimental setup and provide the experimental values of detection rates dependence on the modulation signals phase difference.

This work shows the first application of a burst laser for laser-induced grating spectroscopy (LIGS) diagnostics. High repetition rate (100 kHz) LIGS is performed in non reacting and reacting flows using the fundamental harmonic of a Nd:YAG pulse-burst laser as pump. In the first part of the paper, we demonstrate the first time-resolved, high repetition rate electrostrictive LIGS measurements in a sinusoidally-modulated helium jet, allowed by the highly energetic pulses delivered by the burst laser (around 130 mJ per pulse). In the second part of the paper, we perform thermal LIGS measurements in a premixed laminar methane/air flame. Thermal gratings are generated in the flame products from the water vapour, which weakly absorbs 1064 nm light. Thus, this work demonstrates the potential of seeding-free high repetition rate LIGS as a technique to detect and time-resolve the instantaneous speed of sound, temperature, and composition in unsteady flow processes.

A sheet of graphene under magnetic bias attains anisotropic surface conductivity, opening the door for realizing compact devices such as Faraday rotators, isolators and circulators. In this paper, an accurate and analytical method is proposed for a periodic array of graphene ribbons under magnetic bias. The method is based on integral equations governing the induced surface currents on the coplanar array of graphene ribbons. For subwavelength size ribbons subjected to normally incident plane waves, the current distribution is derived leading to analytical expressions for the reflection/transmission coefficients. The results obtained are in excellent agreement with full-wave simulations and predict resonant spectral effects that cannot be accounted for by existing semi-analytical methods. Finally, we extract an analytical, closed form solution for the Faraday rotation of magnetically-biased graphene ribbons. In contrast to previous studies, this paper presents a fast, precise and reliable technique for analyzing magnetically-biased array of graphene ribbons, which are one of the most popular graphene-based structures.

Optical lithography is a fundamental process to fabricate integrated circuits, which are the basic fabric of the information age. Due to image distortions inherent in optical lithography, inverse lithography techniques (ILT) are extensively used by the semiconductor industry to improve lithography image resolution and fidelity in semiconductor fabrication. As the density of integrated circuits increases, computational complexity has become a central challenge in ILT methods. This paper develops a new and powerful framework of a model-driven convolution neural network (MCNN) to obtain the approximate guess of the ILT solutions, which can be used as the input of the following ILT optimization with much fewer iterations as compared with conventional ILT algorithms. The combined approach to use the proposed MCNN together with the gradient-based method can improve the speed of ILT optimization algorithms up to an order of magnitude and further improve the imaging performance of coherent optical lithography systems. This paper, to the best of our knowledge, is the first to exploit a state-of-the-art MCNN to solve the ILT problem and provide considerable performance advantages. The imaging model of optical lithography is utilized to establish a neural network architecture and an unsupervised training strategy. The neural network architecture and the initial network parameters are derived by unfolding and truncating the model-based iterative ILT optimization procedure. Then, a model-based decoder is proposed to enable the unsupervised training of the neural network, which averts the time-consuming labelling process in training data. This work opens a new window for MCNN techniques to effectively improve the computational efficiency and imaging performance of conventional ILT algorithms. Some impressive good simulation results are provided to verify the superiority of the proposed MCNN approach.

This paper presents the optics design for a microscale Selective Laser Sintering (μ-SLS) system that aims to allow large areas of nanoparticles to be sintered simultaneously while still maintaining micrometer scale feature resolutions in order to improve the throughput of the microscale additive manufacturing process. The optics design is shown to be able to sinter a 2.3 mm by 1.3 mm area of metal nanoparticles that have been spread into a ~400 nm thick layer with a feature resolution of ~3 μm in a single shot. The optical resolution of this system is shown to be ~1.2 μm indicating that only about 2-3 pixels are needed to form a good sintered part. In addition, using the optical design presented in this paper, it is estimated that the μ-SLS system should be able to achieve a volumetric throughput of ~63 mm3/hr, making this process one of the highest throughput processes available today for the microscale additive manufacturing of three-dimensional metal structures.

Bidirectional ultrafast fiber lasers capable of generating counter-propagating (CP) coherent solitons are promising to be served as a dual-comb light source for the applications in spectroscopy and gyroscope. In the absence of efficient numerical model, the understanding of the operation of bidirectional fiber lasers is very limited. In this paper, we experimentally explore the pulsating dynamics of CP solitons in a bidirectional mode locked fiber laser and present a set of rich complex dynamics of CP solitons, revealing for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, the periodic breathing and acyclic pulsating dynamics of CP solitons. With a bi-directional pumping configuration, the impacts of gain distribution along the fiber on the dynamics of CP solitons have been investigated and discussed. These results provide further evidence of the universality of breathing dynamics of solitons. More importantly, the abundant dynamical behavior of CP solitons demonstrated in this paper, collaborating with a handful of previous reports on the buildup dynamics of CP solitons in bidirectional fiber lasers, underline further the independent evolving dynamics of CP solitons. These findings contribute to the understanding of how bidirectional lasers work and, consequently, will accelerate the development of bidirectional lasers in the applications such as gyroscope.

Continuous noninvasive measurement of vital bio-signs, such as cardiovascular parameters, is an important tool in evaluation of the patient’s physiological condition and health monitoring. Based on new enabling technologies, continuous monitoring of heart and respiration rate, pulse wave velocity and blood pressure have been investigated, advanced and reflected in numerous papers published in recent years. In this paper, we introduce a new technique for noninvasive sensing of vital bio-signs based on a multimode optical fiber sensor that can be integrated into a fabric. The sensor consists of a laser, optical fiber, video camera and computer. Its operation is based on tracking of point-wise intensity variations on speckle patterns caused by interference of the light modes within the fiber subjected to deformation. The paper contains theoretical analysis and experimental validation of the proposed scheme. The main goal is to advance a simple low-cost sensor embedded in a cloth fabric to track changes in the cardiovascular condition of the wearer.

This joint feature issue of Optics Express and Applied Optics highlights contributions from authors who presented their latest research at the OSA Optical Sensors and Sensing Congress, held in San Jose, California, USA, from 25–27 June 2019. The joint feature issue comprises six contributed papers, which expand upon their respective conference proceedings. The published papers introduced here cover a range of timely research topics in optics and photonics for active open-path sensing, radiometry, and adaptive optics and fiber devices.

In fringe projection profilometry, system calibration is crucial for guaranteeing the measurement accuracies. Its difficulty lies in calibrating projector parameters, especially when the projector lens has distortions, since the projector, unlike a camera, cannot capture images, leading to an obstacle to knowing the correspondences between its pixels and object points. For solving this issue, this paper, exploiting the fact that the fringe phases on a plane board theoretically have a distribution of rational function, proposes an iterative calibration method based on phase measuring. Projecting fringes onto the calibration board and fitting the measured phases with a rational function allow us to determine projector pixels corresponding to the featured points on the calibration board. Using these correspondences, the projector parameters are easy to estimate. Noting that the projector lens distortions may deform the fitted phase map thus inducing errors in the estimates of the projector parameters, this paper suggests an iterative strategy to overcome this problem. By implementing the phase fitting and the parameter estimating alternately, the intrinsic and extrinsic parameters of the projector, as well as its lens distortion coefficients, are determined accurately. For compensating for the effects of the lens distortions on measurement, this paper gives two solutions. The pre-compensation actively curves the fringes in computer when generating them; whereas when using the post-compensation, the lens distortion correction is performed in the data processing stage. Both methods are experimentally verified to be effective in improving the measurement accuracies.

Glare and visual discomfort are important factors that should be taken into account in illumination design. Conventional freeform lenses offer perfect control over the outgoing intensity distribution, thereby allowing optical radiation patterns with sharp cut-offs in order to optimize the unified glare rating index. However, these freeform lenses do not offer control over the near-field luminance distribution. Observing the emitted light distribution from a high-brightness LED through a freeform lens gives a high peak luminance that can result in glare. To reduce this peak luminance, freeform lenses should be used in conjunction with light diffusing structures. However, this diminishes the control over the outgoing intensity distribution what is the main benefit of a freeform lens. Another approach to reduce the observed peak luminance, is by spreading the emitted light over multiple optical channels via freeform lens arrays. This paper proposes a novel method to design luminance spreading freeform lens arrays that offer perfect control over the resulting intensity pattern. The method is based on a non-invertible mapping of a 2D parameter space. This results in a source-target mapping in which multiple ingoing ray directions are mapped onto every position of the target distribution. The case of continuous and discontinuous mappings are both discussed in this paper. An optical-see-through augmented reality (AR) system assists our daily work by augmenting our sense with computer-generated information. Two of optical challenges of AR are image registration and vision correction due to fixed optical properties of the optical elements of AR systems. In this paper, we demonstrated an AR system with optical zoom function as well as a function of image registration via two LC lenses in order to help people see better by magnifying the virtual image and adjusting the location of virtual image. The operating principles are introduced, and experiments are performed. The concept demonstrated in this paper could be further extended to other electro-optical devices as long as the devices exhibit the capability of phase modulations.

In this paper, we demonstrate 67 fs pulse emitting with tungsten disulfide (WS2) in mode-locked erbium-doped fiber (EDF) lasers. Using the pulsed laser deposition method, WS2 is deposited on the surface of the tapered fiber to form the evanescent field. The fiber-taper WS2 saturable absorber (SA) with the large modulation depth is fabricated to support the ultrashort pulse generation. The influences of the WS2 SA are analyzed through contrastive experiments on fiber lasers with or without the WS2 SA. The pulse duration is measured to be 67 fs, which is the shortest pulse duration obtained in the mode-locked fiber lasers with two dimensional (2D) material SAs. Compared to graphene, topological insulator, and other transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) SAs, results in this paper indicate that the fiber-taper WS2 SA with large modulation depth is a more promising photonic device in mode-locked fiber lasers with the wide spectrum and ultrashort pulse duration.

This paper proposes a novel 3-D surface profile measurement scheme by only a single-shot color binary speckle pattern (CBSP) and a temporal-spatial correlation matching algorithm, which can be applied to measurements of dynamic and static objects. R/G/B channels of CBSP are coupled with three carefully designed black and white binary speckle patterns (BWBSPs), whose physical features are associated with the system configuration parameters. We mathematically deduce the concrete details of how to design such a pattern and its relationship with the system parameters selected in the experiment. During 3-D reconstruction, we develop an extended temporal-spatial correlation framework to determine the correspondence between two stereo images sequences that are composed of R/G/B images separated from a captured color stereo image pair. Comparative experiments and analysis are implemented to assess the measurement accuracy using standard workpieces (dumbbell and optical flat). The results indicate that the proposed approach enjoys better performance than the conventional BWBSP-based method in terms of spatial resolution, accuracy, and efficient reconstructed points. An experiment of applying CBSP to measuring a moving A4 paper is also presented, demonstrating the success of our computational framework. Finally discussions concerning the limitations of this method are implemented.

A potential erroneous and misleading result which is caused by the wrong calculation of current density and transconductance was found in a paper, namely [Opt. Express22, A1589 (2014)]. After checking the calculation, this paper points out the contradictory results existing in the MOSFET gate width as regards its actual layout and inconsistent I-V characteristics. Judging from the calculation result, we estimate that the author may confuse gate length with gate width in the calculation. Considering the author was conducting an interdisciplinary research and demonstrating a novel device design, these calculation errors may be trivial and comprehensible. But we still suggest that the author can make their work more accurate and comparable with other monolithic integration works by correcting the existing calculation errors.

The particle picture presented by the author in the paper “A particle picture of the optical resonator” [K. Altmann, ASSL 2014 Conference Paper ATu2A.29], which shows that the probability density of a photon propagating with a Gaussian wave can be computed by the use of a Schrodinger equation, is generalized to the case of a wave with arbitrary shape of the phase front. Based on a consideration of the changing propagation direction of the relativistic mass density propagating with the electromagnetic wave, a transverse force acting on the photon is derived. The expression obtained for this force makes it possible to show that the photon moves within a transverse potential that in combination with a Schrodinger equation allows to describe the transverse quantum mechanical motion of the photon by the use of matter wave theory, even though the photon has no rest mass. The obtained results are verified for the plane, the spherical, and the Gaussian wave. Additional verification could be provided also by the fact that the mathematical equation describing the Guoy phase shift could be derived from this particle picture in full agreement with wave optics. One more verification could be obtained by the fact that within the range of the validity of paraxial wave optics, Snell's law could also be derived from this particle picture. Numerical validation of the obtained results for the case of the general wave is under development.

The aim of this paper is to develop a new composite structure of catadioptric optical system containing both freeform refractive surface and freeform total internal reflective (TIR) surface for LED road illumination applications. The role of freeform refractive part is to generate the shifted general rectangular illumination pattern to optimally match the shape of the road surface. The application of TIR mechanism is aimed to control the stray light in the sidewalk direction of the road luminaire and maximize the efficient energy efficiency. In this paper, we use the "double pole" ray mapping technique to design the refractive optical surface and the θ-φ coordinate ray mapping technique to derive the freeform TIR surface. The simulation shows that the novel catadioptric design has relatively high collection efficiency, thus high average illuminance level inside the effective illumination area. This lens also has good control of stray light on the backside of the road luminaire.

In this paper, we demonstrated an improved laser self-mixing grating interferometer (SMGI) with auto-collimation design which can avoid the disturbance from the light feedback of the zero-order diffraction beam. In order to obtain higher optical subdivision, SMGI with multiple-diffraction is implemented. Both theoretical analysis and experimental work show that the proposed system for displacement measurement can achieve high sensitivity and low measurement uncertainty. Using the proposed system, different forms of micro-displacement signals applied on the target (grating) have been reconstructed with accuracy of a few nanometers. The work presented in this paper provides a good way to achieve robust and high precision measurement with compact system configuration.

The next generation of Extremely Large Telescopes (ELT), with diameters up to 39 meters, is planned to begin operation in the next decade and promises new challenges in the development of instruments since the instrument size increases in proportion to the telescope diameter D, and the cost as D2 or faster. The growing field of astrophotonics (the use of photonic technologies in astronomy) could solve this problem by allowing mass production of fully integrated and robust instruments combining various optical functions, with the potential to reduce the size, complexity and cost of instruments. Astrophotonics allows for a broad range of new optical functions, with applications ranging from sky background filtering, high spatial and spectral resolution imaging and spectroscopy. In this paper, we want to provide astronomers with valuable keys to understand how photonics solutions can be implemented (or not) according to the foreseen applications. The paper introduces first key concepts linked to the characteristics of photonics technologies, placed in the framework of astronomy and spectroscopy. We then describe a series of merit criteria that help us determine the potential of a given micro-spectrograph technology for astronomy applications, and then take an inventory of the recent developments in integrated micro-spectrographs with potential for astronomy. We finally compare their performance, to finally draw a map of typical science requirements and pin the identified integrated technologies on it. We finally emphasize the necessary developments that must support micro-spectrograph in the coming years., 29 pages, 17 figures; accepted for publication in Optics Express, feature issue "Recent Advances in Astrophotonics"

Fabricating metasurfaces over large areas at low costs remains a critical challenge to their practical implementation. This paper reports on the use of microsphere photolithography (MPL) to create infrared metasurfaces by changing the angle-of-incidence of the illumination to steer the photonic jet. The displacement of the photonic jet is shown to scale with the diameter of the microsphere while the exposure dose scales with the square of the microsphere diameter. This process is robust in the presence of local defects in the microsphere lattice. The paper demonstrates patterning split ring resonators and tripole based metasurfaces using MPL, which are fabricated and characterized with FTIR. The combination of bottom-up and top-down approaches in off-normal incidence microsphere photolithography technique provides cost-effective, flexible, and high-throughput fabrication of infrared metasurfaces.

Laser shock micro-forming is a non-thermal laser forming method that uses laser-induced shockwave to modify surface properties and to adjust shapes and geometry of work pieces. The magnitude and spatial distribution of the laser-induced shockwaves depend on the energy profiles of the laser beam focused on sample surfaces. In this paper, we present an adaptive optical technique to engineer spatial profiles of laser beams to control the shapes, sizes, and locations of the laser-induced shockwaves and the resulting forming features. Using a spatial light modulator, this adaptive laser beam forming tool was used to process free-standing MEMS structures in aluminum, which has led to highly uniform forming features. Shockwave simultaneously excited by multiple laser beams generated by the spatial light modulator and its effects on the micro-forming process were also studied. The results presented in this paper show that the adaptive optics laser beam forming is an effective and flexible method to generate shockwave with various shapes and sizes of wavefront and at multiple locations for laser processing at microscales.

Due to the interference of excitation lights and the perturbation of spattered particles, it is very difficult to detect the real-time evolution of ceramics damaged by pulsed laser. In this paper, a metrology "on-line detection of damage identification via the polarization spectrum imaging" is proposed to realize the real-time observation for damage evolution of ceramic composite irradiated by the laser. In this metrology, the detection principle is based on a mathematical model of polarization bidirectional reflectance distribution function. According to the Stokes vector analysis method, the damage law of the material surface under the continuous activating illuminations of multiple laser pulses and the increase of pulse energy is theoretically deduced and analyzed first, then the measured polarization spectra are compared with the microscopic imaging method to extract the edge texture information, and further the damage details are characterized with this metrology under the typical polarization parameters: I, Q, U, V, DOP and AOP. As a result, the damaging degree of ceramic composite irradiated by the 1064nm nanosecond pulsed laser, which is changed from the pulse power of 155.54 mJ and 14 pulses to 217.94 mJ and 1 pulse, can be identified with a series of polarization parameters in the different polarization spectrum images. These polarization parameters and their derived results reflect the physical and chemical evolutive properties including of texture orientation of the target surface that is different from other methods of damage detection. Finally, it can be concluded that this paper provides a new method for real-time detection of laser damage and lays a foundation for detection and identification under other strong light interference.

The pistons of sparse aperture systems need to be controlled within a fraction of a wavelength for the system's optimal imaging performance. In this paper, we demonstrate that deep learning is capable of performing piston sensing with a single wide-band image after appropriate training. Taking the sensing issue as a fitting task, the deep learning-based method utilizes a deep convolutional neural network to learn complex input-output mapping relations between the broadband intensity distributions and corresponding piston values. Given a trained network and one broadband focal intensity image as the input, the piston can be obtained directly and the capture range achieving the coherence length of the broadband light is available. Simulations and experiments demonstrate the validity of the proposed method. Using only in-focused broadband images as the inputs without defocus division and wavelength dispersion, obviously relaxes the optics complexity. In view of the efficiency and superiority, it's expected that the method proposed in this paper may be widely applied in multi-aperture imaging.

This paper presents the Fantatrope, an improvement of the pre-cinematographic devices such as the zoetrope, which creates a comfortable 3D display with the addition of ultra-realistic full-color holograms. The Fantatrope is built with a set of holograms of 3D-printed figurines mounted on a cylinder rotating at constant speed. A stroboscopic RGB LED lamp synchronized with the rotation successively illuminates the different frames and the recorded character is animated like in a stop-motion movie. All principal functions of this new device can be adjusted and this paper evaluates its performances. The operation of the Fantatrope is successfully demonstrated and shows the effect of a true 3D display without the need for special glasses or other viewing aids.

As a saturable absorption material, the heterostructure with the van der Waals structure has been paid much attention in material science. In general, the heterogeneous combination is able to neutralize, or even exceed, the individual material's advantages in some aspects. In this paper, which describes the magnetron sputtering deposition method, the tapered fiber is coated by the MoS2-WS2 heterostructure, and the MoS2-WS2 heterostructure saturable absorber (SA) is fabricated. The modulation depth of the prepared MoS2-WS2 heterostructure SA is measured to be 19.12%. Besides, the theoretical calculations for the band gap and carrier mobility of the MoS2-WS2 heterostructure are provided. By employing the prepared SA, a stable and passively erbium-doped fiber laser is implemented. The generated pulse duration of 154 fs is certified to be the shortest among all fiber lasers based on transition mental dichalcogenides. Results in this paper provide the new direction for the fabrication of ultrafast photon modulation devices.

International audience; This paper discusses on a quantitative comparison of the performances of different advanced algorithms for phase data de-noising. In order to quantify the performances, several criteria are proposed: the gain in the signal-to-noise ratio, the Q index, the standard deviation of the phase error, and the signal to distortion ratio. The proposed methodology to investigate de-noising algorithms is based on the use of a realistic simulation of noise-corrupted phase data. A database including 25 fringe patterns divided into 5 patterns and 5 different signal-to-noise ratios was generated to evaluate the selected de-noising algorithms. A total of 34 algorithms divided into different families were evaluated. Quantitative appraisal leads to ranking within the considered criteria. A fairly good correlation between the signal-to-noise ratio gain and the quality index has been observed. There exists an anti-correlation between the phase error and the quality index which indicates that the phase errors are mainly structural distortions in the fringe pattern. Experimental results are thoroughly discussed in the paper.

Three dimensional (3D) body scanning has been of great interest to many fields, yet it is still a challenge to generate accurate human body models in a convenient manner. In this paper, we present an accurate 3D body scanning system based on structured light technology. A four-step phase shifting combined with Gray-code method is applied to match pixels in camera and projector planes. The calculation of 3D point coordinates are also derived. The main contribution of this paper is twofold. First, an improved registration algorithm is proposed to align point clouds reconstructed from different views. Second, we propose a graph optimization algorithm to further minimize registration errors. Experimental results demonstrate that our system can produce accurate 3D body models conveniently.

It has been shown in [ J. A. Hoffnagle C. M. Jefferson , Opt. Eng.42, 3090, (2003)] that a pair of plano-aspheric lenses can be used to transform a radially symmetric, Gaussian beam to a radially symmetric flat-top beam. In this paper it is shown that a pair of plano-freeform lenses can be used to transform a collimated light beam of arbitrary (including, non-radially symmetric) intensity profile to a collimated output beam of constant phase and a priori specified intensity pattern over a given flat region. The curved surfaces of both lenses can be chosen strictly convex which should facilitate fabrication. The required pair of plano-freeform lenses is designed using the supporting quadric method (SQM) [ V. I. Oliker in Trends in Nonlinear Analysis, (Springer-Verlag, 2003)] combined with ideas from optimal mass transport [ V. I. Oliker , Arch. Rational Mechanics and Analysis201, 1013 (2011)]. Such approach provides a rigorous methodology for designing freeform optics for irradiance redistribution. In this paper, this approach is applied to design of a laser beam shaping system with two lenses.
