Because on-chip integration of light sources cannot be realized effectively now, integrated nanophotonic chips must couple external light to the integrated photonic waveguide with high efficiency. Realizing high efficiency coupling requires a low-loss coupling structure. In this paper, the factors allowing high efficiency coupling to be realized are analyzed theoretically and the coupling between a lensed fiber and a tapered silicon nitride (Si3N4) waveguide is realized experimentally. Because the coupling efficiency of this structure is not ideal in the experiment, a scheme of direct alignment between the lensed fiber and a cantilever waveguide is proposed. Although the scheme offers a very high coupling efficiency in theory, because of the warpage of the waveguide they cannot be directly aligned experimentally. Finally, this paper advances a scheme for the tapered fiber to be directly overlapped onto the Si3N4/SiO2 cantilever. It is found that the coupler maintains an ideal coupling efficiency for wavelength from 1530 nm to 1600 nm, laying a foundation for the integration of nano-photonic devices and optical fibers.

Graded-index optical fiber probes suitable for focusing or collimating the output of an optical fiber at a wavelength of 1.3 µm have become an enabling technology in optical coherence tomography imaging applications for in vivo bioimaging. Such fiber tips however remain uncommon in other photonics applications. This paper provides the first numerical study of graded-index fiber tips covering a broad range of wavelengths spanning from the UV to short-infrared. The wavelength dependency and the influence of probe geometry on performance characteristics such as far-field divergence angle, spot size and working distance are analyzed. The paper yields easily accessible design guidelines for the fabrication of collimating or focusing fiber tips. Fiber collimators have considerable potential for use in free-space systems and could benefit a range of devices such as variable attenuators, dynamic wavelength equalisers and large 3D optical cross-connect switches, whereas focusing fiber tips have applications in high-resolution imaging. The optical wireless communication (OWC) system has been widely studied as a promising solution for high-speed indoor applications. The transmitter diversity scheme has been proposed to improve the performance of high-speed OWC systems. However, the transmitter diversity is vulnerable to the delay of multiple channels. Recently neural networks have been studied to realize delay-tolerant indoor OWC systems, where long-short term memory (LSTM) and attention-augmented LSTM (ALSTM) recurrent neural networks (RNNs) have shown their capabilities. However, they have high computation complexity and long computation latency. In this paper, we propose a low complexity delay-tolerant RNN scheme for indoor OWC systems. In particular, an RNN with parallelized structure is proposed to reduce the computation cost. The proposed RNN schemes show comparable capability to the more complicated ALSTM, where a bit-error-rate (BER) performance within the forward-error-correction (FEC) limit is achieved for up to 5.5 symbol periods delays. In addition, previously studied LSTM/ALSTM schemes are implemented using high-end GPUs, which have high cost, high power consumption, and long processing latency. To solve these practical limitations, in this paper we further propose and demonstrate the FPGA-based RNN hardware accelerator for delay-tolerant indoor OWC systems. To optimize the processing latency and power consumption, we also propose two optimization methods: the parallel implementation with triple-phase clocking and the stream-in based computation with additive input data insertion. Results show that the FPGA-based RNN hardware accelerator with the proposed optimization methods achieves 96.75% effective latency reduction and 90.7% lower energy consumption per symbol compared with the FPGA-based RNN hardware accelerator without optimization. Compared to the GPU implementation, the latency is reduced by about 61% and the power consumption is reduced by about 58.1%.

Micro computed tomography (µCT) allows the noninvasive visualization and 3D reconstruction of internal structures of objects with high resolution. However, the current commercial µCT system relatively rotates the source-detector or objects to collect projections, referred as RCT in this paper, and has difficulties in imaging large objects with high resolutions because fabrication of large-area, inexpensive flat-panel detectors remains a challenge. In this paper, we proposed a source translation based CT (STCT) for imaging large objects with high resolution to get rid of the limitation of the detector size, where the field of view is primarily determined by the source translation distance. To compensate for the deficiency of incomplete data in STCT, we introduced multi-scanning STCT (mSTCT), from which the projections theoretically meet the conditions required for accurate reconstructions. Theoretical and numerical studies showed that mSTCT has the ability to accurately image large objects without any visible artifacts. Numerical simulations also indicated that mSTCT has a potential capability to precisely image the region of interest (ROI) inside objects, which remains a challenge in RCT due to truncated projections. In addition, an experimental platform for mSTCT has been established, from which the 2D and 3D reconstructed results demonstrated its feasibility for µCT applications. Moreover, STCT also has a great potential for security inspection and product screening by using two perpendicular STCTs, with advantages of low-cost equipment and high-speed examination.

In museum lighting, traditional Chinese paintings are the artworks with the highest light sensitivity. They are vulnerable to the color damage to pigments and the mechanical damage to substrates after the irradiation from light sources. As the basis of effective preventive protection, the research on the two lighting quantity indexes of illuminance and annual exposure (illuminance × time) is currently missing. In this study, the halogen lamp was used as the experimental light source to conduct a 1440 h irradiation experiment on the samples of paper and silk substrates under 4 illuminance levels, respectively, and the test of infrared spectrum was carried out on the samples every 240 h. The oxidation index of paper and crystallinity degree of silk were calculated then. Three-dimensional visual curved surface plots of mechanical damage to samples with the change of illuminance and time were established and then fitted into damage evaluation equations, which revealed and described mathematically the mechanical damage law of samples. Through the equations, the recommended values of illuminance and annual exposure for samples could be calculated. Combining the previous researches on pigments, the lighting quantity indexes of traditional Chinese paintings with different combinations of substrates and pigments were proposed.

This paper presents a simple, yet effective demosaicking technique using polarization channel difference prior for polarization images captured by division of focal plane imaging sensors. The polarization channel difference prior embodies that high frequency energy of difference between orthogonal channels tends to be larger than that between non-orthogonal channels. This paper theoretically proves that this prior is physical valid. For each missing polarization channel at a pixel position, three initial predictions are recovered using different channel differences. The missing polarization channel is estimated by the weighted fusion of the three initial predictions, where the weights are determined by the proposed polarization channel difference prior. The prior helps recover polarization information of the edges, fast and effectively. Experiment results on the polarization dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of the polarization channel difference prior for polarization image demosaicking. The proposed polarization demosaicking method consists of only 16 convolution operations, which makes it fast and parallelizable for GPU acceleration. An image of size 1024×1024 can be processed in 0.33 sec on Ryzen 7 3700X CPU and approximately 60 times faster with RTX 2700 SUPER GPU.

Taking the area CCD optical system as a whole, the analysis methods of the influence of vibrations on its imaging quality have been relatively mature. However, external vibrations will cause different vibrations of optical components inside the opto-mechanical structure. The existing methods are not suitable for analyzing optical components with different vibrations and TDICCD imaging. This paper studies the influence of vibrations on the imaging quality of the integrated TDICCD aerial camera. The relationship between the vibration responses of structures and the imaging quality is established by mathematical models. First, a vibration beam trajectory model of the integrated TDICCD aerial camera is established for the first time using geometric optics and ray tracing. The deviations of the optical axis caused by vibrations in the object plane can be obtained. Then, this paper establishes a TDICCD vibration modulation transfer function model based on statistical moments. The vibration MTF of pixels of each column in the complex two-dimensional moving image captured by the TDICCD can be obtained through this model. Furthermore, a simulation imaging model of the integrated TDICCD aerial camera is established. The influence of vibrations on the imaging quality can be directly obtained through images. Finally, the accuracy of the models established in this paper is verified by multiple tests. The results show that the imaging quality of the integrated TDICCD aerial camera decreases rapidly with the increase of the acceleration excitation.

Light-transport represents the complex interactions of light in a scene. Fast, compressed, and accurate light-transport capture for dynamic scenes is an open challenge in vision and graphics. In this paper, we integrate the classical idea of Lissajous sampling with novel control strategies for dynamic light-transport applications such as relighting water drops and seeing around corners. In particular, this paper introduces an improved Lissajous projector hardware design and discusses calibration and capture for a microelectromechanical (MEMS) mirror-based projector. Further, we show progress towards speeding up the hardware-based Lissajous subsampling for dual light transport frames, and investigate interpolation algorithms for recovering back the missing data. Our captured dynamic light transport results show complex light scattering effects for dense angular sampling, and we also show dual non-line-of-sight (NLoS) capture of dynamic scenes. This work is the first step towards adaptive Lissajous control for dynamic light-transport.

Both toroidal dipoles, electric dipoles and magnetic dipoles belong to one type of electromagnetic excitation. In this paper, we present an all-dielectric metasurface composed of an array of square nanoholes. It can simultaneously generate four resonance responses excited by TD, EQ and MD in the continuous near-infrared band. By introducing the in-plane symmetry breaking of the unit cell, asymmetric dielectric nanohole arrays are used to achieve two quasi-BIC resonance modes with high Q-factors excited by EQ and MD. The paper theoretically analyzes and demonstrates the relationship between structural asymmetry and the radiative Q-factor of two Fano resonances, that are governed by symmetry-protected BICs. And multipole decomposition and near-field analysis are performed to demonstrate the dominant role of various electromagnetic excitations in the four modes. The spectra response is also calculated for different incident polarization angles and medium refractive indices. The proposed metasurface is more feasible and practical compared to other complex nanostructures, which may open avenues for the development of applications such as biochemical sensing, optical switches and optical modulators, and provide a reference for the design of devices with polarization-independent properties.

Recent demonstrations of chaos-based secure communication have proven the feasibility of secured transmission of high-speed (tens of Gbit/s) signals over certain distances (∼100-km), which bring hope for secure communication from theoretical analysis to practical applications. So far, the chaos-based secure communication system with chaos-masking (CMS) encryption is considered as one of the most important and feasible schemes. In this paper, an optical chaotic carrier generated by an opto-electronic oscillator is used to encrypt 112-Gbit/s message by CMS encryption for data transmission over a 1040-km single-mode-fiber. The message is successfully decrypted by combining coherent detection and our proposed blind decryption algorithms, which can successfully separate the chaotic carrier and the message with the bit-error-rate (BER) below the forward error correction (FEC) threshold. Experimental results show that the coherent detection combined digital signal processing algorithms may be a possible way to promote the practical applications of chaotic optical communication in the future. In addition, this paper reveals that the security of the CMS encryption may be not high enough for those systems requiring rigorous confidentiality. Subsequently, we further discuss the bottlenecks encountered in current high-speed chaotic optical communication systems and analyze how to improve and weight the security and practicability.

As the star sensor works under high dynamic conditions, the spot formed by the star on the imaging plane will become a tail, which directly reduces the accuracy of centroid positioning. In addition, the imaging quality of the star sensor is seriously hit by the rolling shutter effect in the rolling shutter exposure mode, which further increases positioning error. Considering the diffusion radius and the dynamic tailing of the star spot, the imaging trajectory and the energy distribution models of the star spot under the rolling shutter exposure mode are established in this paper. Furthermore, based on the purposed models, the influence of the starting positions of stars and the dispersion of star spots to the centroid positioning error are analyzed by numerical simulation respectively, from which the variation laws of the two kinds of errors are obtained. Then, the laboratory experiments are implemented to evaluate the latter error; it indicates from the experimental results that the variation of the latter error is consistent with the simulation results, which is simultaneously proved that it cannot be ignored in practical engineering application. These results can be a valuable reference for developing a high precision star sensor. The models proposed in this paper can describe the star imaging process and evaluate the centroid positioning accuracy under the roller shutter exposure mode effectively, which lays a foundation for further eliminating the rolling shutter effect in the following research and improving the dynamic performance of star sensors.

In this paper, to the best of our knowledge, we first present a deep learning based method for reconstructing the images of two adjacent objects passing through scattering media. We construct an imaging system for imaging of two adjacent objects located at different depths behind the scattering medium. In general, as the light field of two adjacent objects passes through the scattering medium, a speckle pattern is obtained. We employ the designed adversarial network, which is called as YGAN, for reconstructing the two images simultaneously from the speckle. It is shown that based on the trained YGAN, we can reconstruct images of the two adjacent objects with high quality. In addition, the influence of object image types, and the location depths of the two adjacent objects on the imaging fidelity will be studied. Results demonstrate the strong generalization ability and effectiveness of the YGAN. Even in the case where another scattering medium is inserted between the two objects, the YGAN can reconstruct the object images with high fidelity. The technique presented in this paper can be used for applications in areas of medical image analysis, such as medical image classification, segmentation, and studies of multi-object scattering imaging, three-dimensional imaging etc.

In this paper, a broadband tunable absorber based on bulk Dirac semimetal (BDS) in the far-infrared regime is studied. By optimizing the Femi energy and geometric size, the structure can achieve absorption levels greater than 90% in the 8.11-13.94 THz range, with a total thickness of 5.1 µm. Further, the bandwidth of this proposed absorber can be dynamically controlled by changing the Femi energy of the BDS instead of geometry. Meanwhile, the polarization and oblique incident angles in the TE and TM electromagnetic waves are also investigated. Finally, a new symmetry model is adopted to analyze the absorption mechanism, which is the innovation of this paper. This research result may provide potential applications for all types of optical photovoltaic devices and tunable biological chemistry sensors.

A grating-based Talbot-Lau X-ray interferometer provides three imaging modalities, namely attenuation, differential phase contrast, and dark field. Of these, dark-field imaging is uniquely capable of detecting and characterizing micron-scale fine structure in an object via small-angle scattering that reduces fringe visibility. Several empirical studies have been published showing the utility of this imaging modality for a wide range of applications. There also exists a more limited set of theoretical papers, based primarily on wave-optics formulations. In this two-part paper we present a comprehensive statistical optics model of the dark-field effect. In Part 1, we develop the theoretical underpinnings of the model with an emphasis on a scattering object comprising a random collection of microspheres, and in Part 2 [Opt. Express 29, 40917 (2021)10.1364/OE.447798], we provide a variety of example simulation results.

Composite materials are commonly used in aircraft, and the integrity of these materials affects both flight and safety performance. Damage detection technology involving infrared nondestructive testing has played an important role in damage detection in aircraft composite materials. Traditional manual detection methods are inefficient, and the use of intelligent detection methods can effectively improve detection efficiency. Due to the diverse types of damage that can occur in composite materials, this damage is difficult to distinguish solely from infrared images. The introduction of infrared signals, which is temporal signals, provides the possibility of judging the type of damage. In this paper, a 1D-YOLOv4 network is established. The network is based on the YOLOv4 network and adds a changing neck and a 1D-CNN for improvement. Testing shows that the algorithm can identify infrared images and infrared signals in composite materials. Its recognition accuracy is 98.3%, with an AP of 91.9%, and a kappa of 0.997. Comparing the network in this paper with networks such as YOLOv3, YOLOv4 and YOLOv4+Neck, the results show that the proposed network is more effective. At the same time, the detection effects of the original data, the fitted data, the first derivative data and the second derivative data are studied, and the detection effect of the first derivative data has the best outcome.

Optical Kerr effects induced by the propagation of high peak-power laser beams through real atmospheres have been a topic of interest to the nonlinear optics community for several decades. This paper proposes a new analytical model for predicting the filamentation/light channel onset distance in real atmospheres based on modulation instability model considerations. The normalized intensity increases exponentially as the beam propagates through the medium. It is hypothesized that this growth can be modeled as a weighted ratio of the Gaussian beam diameter at range to the lateral coherence radius and can be used to set the power ratio for an absorbing, turbulent, nonlinear media to estimate the beam collapse distance. Comparison of onset distance predictions with those found from computer simulation and deduced from field experiments will be presented. In addition, this model will be used with an analytical approach to quantify the expected radius of light channels resulting from self-focusing both with and without the production of a plasma filament. Finally, this paper will describe a set of 1.5-micron, variable focal length USPL field experiments. Comparisons of theoretical radius calculations to measurements from field experiments will be presented.

It has been a great challenge to design an extremely flexible and stretchable electrochromic device (ECD), due to the physical deformation and fracture of the conductive materials and supporting substrates after plenty of bending. To solve the aforementioned shortcoming of ECDs, in this paper, a self-supporting metal Ni gird electrode is mentioned, which discarded solid or flexible polymeric substrates, having outstanding features of extremely foldability (bending radius lower 50 μm), stretchability (stretching to 117.6%), excellent conductivity (sheet resistance lower 0.4 Ω/sq), high transmittance (about 90% in full spectra), and ultra-thin thickness (3.7 μm). By assembling the metal electrode, the electrochromic material and the hydrogel, a paper-thin, ultra-flexible, and stretchable ECD with an overall thickness of 113 μm was prepared, which could be attached to the manifold and undulating surface of things and be stretched without compromising the dynamic bleaching and coloration performance. The triple-layered and substrate-free ECD with excellent flexibility and wearability could serve as futuristic electronics used for multiple purposes, like flexible displays, camouflage wearables and medical monitoring, etc.

Phase retrieval is an attractive optical testing method with a simple experimental arrangement. The sampling grids wave propagation computation based on the FFT operations is usually involved in each iterative process for the classical phase retrieval model. In this paper, a novel non-propagation optimization phase retrieval technique with the FFT-based basis function is proposed to accelerate wavefront measurement. The sampling grids wave diffraction propagation computation is converted to matrix-vector products that have small dimensions to reduce the computational burden. The diffraction basis function based on generalized numerical orthogonal polynomial and two-step Fresnel propagation is deduced, which is suitable for the generally shaped pupil. This paper provides a universal non-propagation framework to accelerate phase retrieval which is applicable to the arbitrarily shaped wavefront measurement.

The field of dielectric laser accelerators (DLA) garnered a considerable interest in the past six years as it offers novel opportunities in accelerator science and potentially transformative applications. Currently, the most widespread approach considers silicon-based structures due to their low absorption and high refractive index in the infrared spectral region and the well-developed silicon processing technology. In this paper we investigate a diamond as an alternative to silicon, mainly due to its considerably higher damage threshold. In particular, we find that our diamond grating allows a three times higher acceleration gradient (60 MeV/m) compared to silicon gratings designed for a similar electron energy. Using more complex geometries, GeV/m acceleration gradients are within reach for subrelativistic electrons.

Ultra-precision tool-servo-based diamond cutting (UTSDC) is a promising technology for fabricating true 3-dimensional optical microstructures. The diamond tool in UTSDC moves alternatively upward and downward along the thrust direction. However, most studies on the material removal mechanism are limited to the orthogonal cutting condition where the depth of cut is invariant. The effect caused by the tool motion in the thrust direction has been overlooked. In this paper, the indentation effect affected by the tool path, tool shape and cutting speed is systematically studied. It is found that the inclined angle between the tool path direction and the main cutting direction plays a key role in the determination of the material spring back and the formation of side burr. The characteristics of indentation force and material spring back indicates that the indentation mechanism is dominant in the cut-in process where the inclined angle is large, while the shearing mechanism is dominant in the cut-out process. A new theory is proposed to explain the tool indentation mechanism in UTSDC, and the simulation results show that the theory can well predict the indentation force under various cutting conditions.

Ray tracing in gradient-index (GRIN) media has been traditionally performed either by using the analytical or numerical solutions to the Eikonal equation or by creating a layered medium where Snell’s law is calculated in each layer. In this paper, an exact general method to perform ray tracing in GRIN media is presented based on the invariants of the system as stated by Fermat’s principle when the media presents symmetries. Its advantage, compared with other methods reported in the literature, relies on its easy implementation. Besides the GRIN distribution and the initial conditions of the incident ray, once the invariants of the system are stated the resulting math is simple to solve and interpret. To benchmark the algorithm, ray tracing in typical cases of GRIN media is calculated, finding minimal discrepancies between the analytical solutions and our simulations. The used media are axial refractive index and parabolic index fiber and lenses with spherical gradient-index symmetry, such as: Luneburg’s, Gutman’s, generalized Maxwell’s Fish-eye, Eaton’s, and concentrator lenses. Our method can be further applied to distributions with symmetries associated with other common curvilinear orthogonal coordinate systems, in particular to those associated to the separability of the Helmholtz equation that would allow us to investigate wave optics in these GRIN media with the associated geometries.

Phase-measuring phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (OTDR) has been widely used for the distributed acoustic sensing. However, the demodulated phase signals are generally noisy due to the laser frequency drift, laser phase noise, and interference fading. These issues are usually addressed individually. In this paper, we propose to address them simultaneously using supervised learning. We first use numerical simulations to generate the corresponding noisy differential phase signals for the given acoustic signals. Then we use the generated acoustic signals and noises together with some real noise data to train an end-to-end convolutional neutral network (CNN) for the acoustic signal enhancement. Three experiments are conduct to evaluate the performance of the proposed signal enhancement method. After enhancement, the average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the recovered PZT vibration signals is improved from 13.4 dB to 42.8 dB, while the average scale-invariant signal-to-distortion ratio (SI-SDR) of the recovered speech signals is improved by 7.7 dB. The results show that, the proposed method can well suppress the noise and signal distortion caused by the laser frequency drift, laser phase noise, and interference fading, while recover the acoustic signals with high fidelity.

Phase modulators based upon the thermo-optic effect are used widely in silicon photonics for low speed applications such as switching and tuning. The dissipation of the heat produced to drive the device to the surrounding silicon is a concern as it can dictate how compact and tightly packed components can be without concerns over thermal crosstalk. In this paper we study through modelling and experiment, on various silicon on insulator photonic platforms, how close waveguides can be placed together without significant thermal crosstalk from adjacent devices.

Waveguide-type near-eye displays have useful properties such as compact form factor, lightweight and see-through capability. Conventional systems, however, support only a single image plane fixed at a certain distance, which may induce eye fatigue due to the vergence-accommodation conflict. In this paper, we propose a waveguide-type near-eye display with two image planes using a polarization grating. Two images with orthogonal polarizations propagate within the waveguide with different total internal reflection angles and form virtual images at different distances. The use of the polarization grating and two pairs of holographic optical elements enables dual image plane formation by a single waveguide with high transparency for the real scene. Optical experiments confirm the principle of the proposed optical system.

The measurement of intense E-field is a fundamental need in various research areas. An electro-optic (EO) sensor based on common path interferometer (CPI) is widely used due to its better temperature stability and controllability of optical bias. However, the small EO coefficient leads to poor sensitivity. In this paper, a quantum enhanced EO sensor is proposed by replacing the vacuum state in classical one with a squeezed-vacuum state. Theoretical analysis shows that the performance of the quantum enhanced EO sensor, including signal to noise ratio (SNR) and sensitivity, can always beat the classical one due to the noise suppression caused by the squeezed-vacuum state. Experimental results demonstrate that, there is still a 1.12dB quantum enhancement compared with the classical one when the degree of the squeezed-vacuum is 1.60dB. More importantly, except the increase of the EO coefficient or the optical power, the performance of the EO sensor can also be enhanced via quantum light source. Such a quantum enhanced EO sensor could be practically applied for the measurement of intense E-field.

Light-to-heat conversion that occurs when irradiating a metal nanoparticle within a polymer matrix with ultrashort laser pulses initiates photothermal destruction of dissolved precursor molecules just near the nanoparticle. Extracted elementary species deposit on the nanoparticle surface, forming a core-shell structure. We construct an approximate analytical model for this process. The necessary step here is the diffusion of the precursor molecules towards the nanoparticle surface, replacing the broken ones. This diffusion can be a limiting factor for the rate of the shell growth. However, we show that because of the sharp localization of the process the precursor diffusion can successfully supply the growing shell with elementary species at realistic values of the precursor diffusion coefficient if the sample is kept in viscoelastic state at a temperature near the glass transition between the laser pulses. The main restriction on the obtained shell thickness comes from the requirement of matrix stability during the laser processing. Taking this restriction into account, the model allows estimating reachable shell thicknesses depending on the kinetic parameters of the precursor destruction reaction. This paper relies on numerous publications on photo/laser-induced growth of homogeneous metal or semiconductor nanoparticles within polymer matrices; however, this type of growth for compound core-shell nanoparticles is studied for the first time, to our knowledge.

Structured light (SL) based three-dimensional (3D) measurement struggles to estimate high dynamic range (HDR) scenes, where both high and low reflectivity parts exist simultaneously. This paper proposes a method through the joint design and optimization of hardware and algorithms, in which only four frames are required to realize the 3D reconstruction of HDR scenes. The height information of each sub-area in the scene under test can be encoded effectively by temporally projecting two sets of complementary speckle patterns onto target surface. To decode the corresponding patterns captured by the cameras, we design a stereo matching strategy consisting of space-time binary feature (ST-BIF) descriptor preliminary screening and zero-mean normalized cross-correlation (ST-ZNCC) final retrieval. The ST-BIF descriptor based on neighborhood comparison is designed to describe the space-time relative intensity change of projected speckles. Besides the HDR adaptability, the ST-BIF descriptor can effectively improve the matching speed. In addition, the measurable dynamic range can be further improved by fusing all channel disparities as evaluated results, benefitting from the different response of R, G and B channels in color camera to monochromatic light. Experiments are conducted to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method. The results indicate that our method achieves the root mean square error 0.2516mm (vs. 1.0668 by commonly used ZNCC) and an average coverage rate up to 94.87% (vs. 93.35% by commonly used ZNCC). Furthermore, the experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve 3D reconstruction of HDR scenes including specular reflection region.

While ultrahigh-baud-rate optical signals are effective for extending the transmission distance of large capacity signals, they also reduce the number of wavelengths that can be arranged in a band because of their wider bandwidth. This reduces the flexibility of optical path configuration in reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexing (ROADM) networks. In colorless, directionless and contentionless (CDC)-ROADM in particular, the effect reduces the add/drop ratio at a node. Multiband ROADM systems are an effective countermeasure for overcoming this issue, but they make the node configuration more complicated and its operation more difficult. In this paper, we analyze the challenges of C + L band CDC-ROADM and show that optical switch devices that operate over multiple bands are effective in meeting them. For this purpose, we built a C + L band CDC-ROADM node based on C + L band wavelength selective switches (WSSs) and multicast switches (MCSs) and confirmed its effectiveness experimentally. In particular, to simplify the node configuration, we propose a reduction in the number of optical amplifiers used for node loss compensation and experimentally verify its feasibility., 10 pages, 9 figures

In this paper we present a tunable filter using Ge2Sb2Se4Te1 (GSST) phase change material. The design principle of the filter is based on a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) cavity operating in the reflection mode. This is intended for night vision applications that utilize 850nm as the illumination source. The filter allows us to selectively reject the 850nm band in one state. This is illustrated through several daytime and nighttime imaging applications.

Few-mode fiber (FMF), a mode multiplex technique, has been a candidate to provide high transmission capability in next-generation elastic optical networks (EONs), where the probabilistic shaping (PS) technology is widely used to approach Shannon limit. In this paper, we investigate a fast and accurate method of modulation format recognition (MFR) of received signals based on a transfer learning network (TLN) in PS-based FMF-EONs. TLN can apply the feature extraction ability of convolutional neural networks to the analysis of the constellations. We conduct experiments to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme in FMF transmissions. Six modulation formats, including 16QAM, PS-16QAM, 32QAM, PS-32QAM, 64QAM and PS-64QAM, and four propagating modes, including LP01, LP11a, LP11b and LP21, are involved. In addition, comparisons of TLN with different structures of convolutional neural networks backbones are presented. In the experiment, the iterations of the TLN are one-tenth that of conventional deep learning network (DLN), and the TLN overcomes the problem of overfitting and requires less data than that of DLN. The experimental results show that the TLN is an efficient and feasible method for MFR in the PS-based FMF communication system.

Perfect optical vortex beams (POV) have attracted considerable attention in many novel applications because they have the advantage of a radial profile that is independent of the topological charge (TC). Nowadays, there are few effective methods to measure both the integer and the fractional TCs of the POV. In this paper, we achieve the precise measurement of arbitrary TCs through the approach of dynamic angular double slits (ADS), which performs the transformation from the POV to the interference intensity patterns at the angular bisector direction of the ADS. The information of the TC can be obtained from the periodically changing interference pattern. The deviation is less than 2% by comparing the theoretical values with the fitting results, therefore the detection method is effective and reasonable.

Optical camera communication (OCC) systems, which utilize image sensors embedded in commercial-off-the-shelf devices to detect time and spatial variations in light intensity for enabling data communications, have stirred up researchers’ interest. Compared to a direct OCC system whose maximum data rate is strongly determined by the LED source size, a reflected OCC system can break that limitation since the camera captures the light rays reflecting off an observation plane (e.g., a wall) instead of those light rays directly emanated from the light source. However, the low signal-to-noise ratio caused by the non-uniform irradiance distribution produced by LED luminaire on the observation plane in current reflected OCC systems cannot be avoided, hence low complexity and accurate demodulation are hard to achieve. In this paper, we present a FreeOCC system, which employs a dedicatedly tailored freeform lens to precisely control the propagation of modulated light. A desired uniform rectangular illumination is produced on the observation plane by the freeform lens, yielding a uniform grayscale distribution within the received frame captured by the camera in the proposed FreeOCC system. Then, the received signal can be easily demodulated with high accuracy by a simple thresholding scheme. A prototype of the FreeOCC system demonstrates the high performance of the proposed system, and two pulse amplitude modulation schemes (4-order and 8-order) are performed. By using the freeform lens, the packet reception rate is increased by 35% and 32%, respectively; the bit error rate is decreased by 72% and 59%, respectively, at a transmission frequency of 5 kHz. The results clearly show that the FreeOCC system outperforms the common reflected OCC system.

Optical cryptanalysis based on deep learning (DL) has grabbed more and more attention. However, most DL methods are purely data-driven methods, lacking relevant physical priors, resulting in generalization capabilities restrained and limiting practical applications. In this paper, we demonstrate that the double-random phase encoding (DRPE)-based optical cryptosystems are susceptible to preprocessing ciphertext-only attack (pCOA) based on DL strategies, which can achieve high prediction fidelity for complex targets by using only one random phase mask (RPM) for training. After preprocessing the ciphertext information to procure substantial intrinsic information, the physical knowledge DL method based on physical priors is exploited to further learn the statistical invariants in different ciphertexts. As a result, the generalization ability has been significantly improved by increasing the number of training RPMs. This method also breaks the image size limitation of the traditional COA method. Optical experiments demonstrate the feasibility and the effectiveness of the proposed learning-based pCOA method.

Tunable illumination with high uniformity can improve functionality for multiple application areas. In lighting applications, dynamic illumination has been achieved by applying axial movement to the source(s) or other optical elements, resulting in poor uniformity, or using a liquid lens that adds design complexity. Advances in high-precision manufacturing methods have facilitated the practical implementation of freeform optical components, enabling new design approaches for illumination systems. This paper explores the use of arrays of varifocal transmissive freeform Alvarez lenses for an LED-based illumination system. The design is initialized using paraxial geometrical optics concepts and then refined for a 1mm-by−1 mm white LED source through a multi-step optimization. Design procedures are discussed, and simulation results are presented for an example illumination system that varies from a small circular spot mode to a large square uniform flood mode through millimeter-scale lateral translation between the Alvarez lens arrays.

Non-collinear stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) amplification can obtain high peak power Stokes output while ensuring the stability, but the frequency mismatch reduces the energy conversion efficiency of the system. In this paper, a dual-frequency pulse laser based on acousto-optic crystal modulation is designed. The output pulse pair can be used as pump and Stokes light, respectively, which realizes the active frequency matching of the gain medium Brillouin frequency shift during the SBS amplification process and helps to maintain ideal energy conversion efficiency. The dual-frequency laser finally produced a laser pulse pair with a pulse width adjustment range of 100 ps-50 ns, a frequency shift range of 0 GHz-2 GHz, and the polarization extinction ratio (PER) reaches 20.82dB.

The determination of chirality of circularly polarized light (CPL) is of great significance to the development of various optical techniques. In this paper, a miniature circular polarization analyzer (CPA) based on surface plasmon polariton (SPP) interference is proposed. The proposed CPA consists of a micron scale long sub-wavelength slit and two groups of spatially arranged periodic sub-wavelength rectangular groove pairs, which are etched in a metal layer. Under the illumination of a CPL with a given chirality, the proposed CPA is capable of forming SPP-mediated interference fringes with different periods in far field. The chirality of CPL can be directly and quantitatively differentiated by the frequency value of the far field SPP-mediated interference fringes. Different from the existing SPP-based CPAs, the proposed CPA can directly image the chirality information in far field, avoiding near-field imaging of the SPP field.

The human eye’s resolution varies with the field angle and has high center resolution and low edge resolution characteristics. In this paper, a freeform imaging system is presented that has resolution distribution characteristics similar to those of the human eye. Field-dependent parameters are used to describe the system’s optical properties and a direct design method is proposed to realize the novel functionality. An off-axis reflective freeform imaging system with high center resolution and low edge resolution within a square 30°×30° field of view (FOV) is designed using this method. The maximum instantaneous field of view (IFOV) ratio of center field resolution to edge field resolution is 0.47. Only three freeform surfaces are used to attain good image quality. Simultaneous improvements are observed in both resolution and FOV while the detector remains fixed.

Imaging depth of field is shallow in applications with high magnification and high numerical aperture, such as microscopy, resulting in images with in- and out-of-focus regions. Therefore, methods to extend depth of field are of particular interest. Researchers have previously shown the advantages of using freeform components to extend depth of field, with each optical system requiring a specially designed phase plate. In this paper we present a method to enable extended depth-of-field imaging for a range of numerical apertures using freeform phase plates to create variable cubic wavefronts. The concept is similar to an Alvarez lens which creates variable spherical wavefronts through the relative translation of two transmissive elements with XY polynomial surfaces. We discuss design and optimization methods to enable extended depth of field for lenses with different numerical aperture values by considering through-focus variation of the point spread function and compare on- and off-axis performance through multiple metrics.

In this paper, we investigated the impact of the linewidth of a QCW pulsed sodium laser on the brightness performance of a generating sodium laser guide star by using the numerical simulation tool PRS. We compared the field test results with the simulation results for two TIPC’s 30W class sodium guide star lasers and found the results are in good agreement which proves the tool can be used for prediction. Then, we used the tool to study the influence of D2b repumping and different linewidths from 10MHz to 1GHz on the coupling efficiency and the photon return flux. For the TIPC’s QCW pulsed solid-state laser, when the on-sky power density is 1 W/m2, the coupling efficiency is 79.6 (photons/s/W/(atoms/m2)) without D2b repumping, however, the value is up to 213.3 (photons/s/W/(atoms/m2)) with 15% D2b enabled and is increased by 168% than the value without D2b; when the power density reaches 10 W/m2, the coupling efficiencies without D2b and with 15% D2b are 66.6 and 233.6 (photons/s/W/(atoms/m2)), respectively. The results show that for the QCW pulsed laser, D2b repumping is necessary. With D2b enabled, if the spectral linewidth is too wide or too narrow, the photon return flux will be adversely affected. The return flux of 60MHz is 52.5% higher than that of 1GHz, while the return flux of 300MHz is 37.8% higher than that of 10 MHz when the laser power is 100W.

Vibration can easily affect the structure of long baseline binocular vision sensors, resulting in changes in the external parameters of the binocular calibration model and the failure of measurement method. This paper presents an online stereo vision measurement based on correction of sensor structural parameters. The flexible structure model based on calibration model and iterative gradient descent nonlinear optimization model based on 3D redundant information are established. The optimal estimation of external parameters and object position measurement are realized according to multi-information constraints. Experiments show that this method can effectively solve the measurement failure caused by vibration in stereo vision measurement.

In this paper, we propose an optofluidic lenticular lens array (OLLA) for a two-dimensional/three-dimensional (2D/3D) switchable display. The OLLA includes a bottom substrate layer with lenticular lens structure, a microfluidic layer with microchannels, and a top substrate layer with inlets as well as outlets. A micro gap is formed between the lenticular lens of the bottom substrate layer and the top substrate layer. When air is in the micro gap, the OLLA behaves as a lenticular lens array, which can realize 3D display. When fluid is filled in the micro gap, because the refractive index of the fluid is the same with the lenticular lens structure, the OLLA equivalents to a transparent flat panel, which can realize a 2D display. Experiments verify that a switchable 2D/3D display prototype based on this OLLA and a smartphone achieves both high-resolution 2D display and high-quality 3D display.

In this paper, we propose a chaos-based visible light communication system, wherein multiple users can access the network via the multi-carrier code division multi-access (MC-CDMA). By utilizing the high security property of chaotic sequences being aperiodic and sensitive to initial values, secure access can be achieved. However, the multi-carrier transmission suffers from high peak to average power ratio (PAPR) due to the superposition of multiple carriers, which reduces the lifetime of the light-emitting diodes (LEDs). In order to suppress the PAPR, we propose a joint matrix transform and dual layered phase sequencing (MT-DLPS) scheme. By reducing the autocorrelations of signals, the PAPR can be reduced. Moreover, the computation complexity is analyzed. Simulations are then conducted to validate that the PAPR is effectively reduced while maintaining satisfactory bit error rate (BER) performances.

With the increasing demands for large-scale acoustic sensing in many important fields such as hydrophone, vehicle tracking and pipeline monitoring, optical fiber-based distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) has experienced a rapid development. In recent years, quasi-distributed acoustic sensing (QDAS) based on single mode fiber with enhanced point array has emerged, which is a good approach to improve signal-to-noise ratio and deal with the interference-fading problem in DAS. However, similar to DAS, the performance of QDAS is also limited by the finite frequency domain resources. To break the trade-off between sensing bandwidth and distance, additional frequency domain resources are always needed to multiplex the sensing channel. Multiple-input multiple-output coding technology is an approach to realize QDAS channel-multiplexing with the orthogonal probe waves in the same frequency band. In this paper, the iteration constrain condition of the orthogonal codes is modified, and the generation method of more orthogonal codes with high and consistent suppression ratio for QDAS is provided. In the demonstration experiment, the QDAS has successfully achieved 5 times the sensing bandwidth expansion on a 5.19 km fiber based on 5 new orthogonal codes on the same frequency, with 5 m spatial resolution and 10 p ε / H z strain noise level.

A large-area mid-infrared broadband absorber is proposed in this paper. The absorber is a spiral ITO structure grown on a hexagonal lattice arrangement of silicon nanopillars by using a glancing angle deposition method. The experimental results show that when the heights of the silicon nanopillars are 1.7 µm and the number of rotation depositions is n = 5, that is, the rotation angle is 150 degrees, the absorber absorbs more than 81% of electromagnetic waves in the 2.5-6 µm spectral range. In the atmospheric window of 3-5 µm, the integral absorption reaches 96%. The experimental results also show that the absorbing ability of the ITO structure in the mid-infrared atmospheric window is significantly stronger than that of the structure composed of silver under the same preparation conditions. The main reasons for the broadband absorption are that the spiral ITO structure has resonant absorption of electromagnetic waves with different wavelengths in the empty cavity regions with different sizes, and ITO has longer penetration depths than noble metals in the mid-infrared band, which brings about stronger broadband absorption. The combination of the two leads to a broadening of the total absorption spectrum. The higher heights of the silicon nanopillars enhance absorption further. Additionally, the loose spiral ITO distributions indicate lower mean plasma concentration and then increase penetration depths further, resulting in stronger light absorption. Such a large-area mid-infrared absorption structure with a simple preparation method has potential applications in mid-infrared cloaking and sensing.

In this paper, a low-cost dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (DDMZM) based 40 Gbit/s polarization division multiplexing (PDM) fiber-wireless-integration system at Ka-band is experimentally demonstrated. Since the DDMZM is biased at the quadrature point for electro-to-optical (E/O) conversion, a high-power direct current (DC)/radio frequency (RF) component will appear within the received signal bandwidth. This high-power component becomes a narrowband interference due to the phase noise of lasers, which will lead to the incorrect convergence of the constant-modulus algorithm (CMA) during equalization at the receiver side. In order to deal with the broadened DC component, twin-single-sideband (twin-SSB) signal with bandwidth interleave and RF-pilot based phase noise compensation scheme are adopted. Enabled by the combination of optical PDM technique and heterodyne coherent detection, a 40 Gbit/s PDM twin-SSB Nyquist-shaped quadrature-phase-shift-keying (QPSK) signal transmitting over 20-km single mode fiber (SMF) and 1-m 2×2 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless distance is achieved with the bit error rate (BER) below the hard-decision forward-error-correction (HD-FEC) threshold of 3.8×10−3.

In this paper, we propose a giant circular dichroism (CD) chiral metamirror that differentially absorbs circularly polarized (CP) waves with dual/multi bands. The structure is composed of two variable τ resonators with counter split opening directions and different eigenfrequencies. Even more important, these two resonators are aligned vertically, and then integrated into one periodical unit cell, which results in the high-efficiency absorptive CD. The chiral metamirror has a narrow-band absorption of the left-handed circularly polarized (LCP) wave for lower resonance, and a broadband absorption of the right-handed circularly polarized (RCP) wave in the higher-frequency range. Optical resonator designs with diversified chiral molecules combinations are further studied in detail. Through the study of different periodic arrangements, parameters scanning optimization, and power loss distributions, it is proved that the overall permutation symmetry breakdown of total combined chiral molecules is the determining factor for the absorptive CD. Based on the principle in the microwave model, two mid-infrared chiral metamirrors are further realized, which can still show good spin-dependent absorption. This multi-polarization and multifunction response advance novel photonic devices for a variety of applications including CP laser, biomolecules detection, and energy harvester.

This paper proposes a 4D line-scan hyperspectral imager that combines 3D geometrical measurement and spectral detection with high spectral resolution and spatial accuracy. We investigated the geometrical optical model of a camera attaching with a spectrograph, theoretically explored the mathematical model for line-scan fringe projection profilometry, and established the 3D reconstruction and calibration methods under this proposed line-scan high-dimensional imaging system. The spectral resolution of the system is 2.8 nm, and the spatial root-mean-square-error is 0.0895 mm when measuring a standard sphere with a diameter of 40.234 mm. We measure a colored statue to showcase the intensity change along the dimension of wavelength. In addition, the quality and defect of the spinach leaves are inspected based on spectral data and depth data, which demonstrates the potential application of the system in the food industry.

This paper proposes focal surface occlusion to provide focal cues of occlusion masks for multiple virtual objects at continuous depths in an occlusion-capable optical see-through head-mounted display. A phase-only spatial light modulator (PSLM) that acts as a dynamic free-form lens is used to conform the focal surface of an occlusion mask to the geometry of the virtual scene. To reproduce multiple and continuous focal blurs while reducing the distortion of the see-through view, an optical design based on afocal optics and edge-based optimization to exploit a property of the occlusion mask is established. The prototype with the PSLM and transmissive liquid crystal display can reproduce the focus blur of occluded objects at multiple and continuous depths with a field of view of 14.6°.

A 300 mm×500 mm large-area echelle grating with groove density of 79 grooves/mm is fabricated for the spectrometer of the fiber array solar optical telescope (FASOT). This paper focusses on measurement methods of the grating performance. We present a method to evaluate the grating’s stray light intensity, which is measured to a level of 10−4. The directly measured grating efficiency is approximately 90% of the designed value, and an indirect measurement method based on the grating groove profile is proposed. Based on the Rayleigh criterion and the grating diffraction wavefront, a physical optics method and a geometric grating method are proposed and are used to calculate the actual grating resolving power; the calculated results exceed 95% of the grating’s theoretical resolving power. These results show that the CIOMP-6 ruling engine has sufficient precision to fabricate high-quality, large-area echelle gratings.

In this paper, we report that the conversion efficiency and spectrum of femtosecond optical parametric amplification (fs-OPA) can be significantly enhanced by employing a compact cascaded femtosecond OPA (CF-OPA) scheme with the self-compensation of the temporal walk-off between two nonlinear gain media. Correspondingly, the gain related temporal contrast can also be improved. The feasibility of the CF-OPA method using three cascaded BBO crystals is numerically and experimentally analyzed. Moreover, by replacing the conventional fs-OPA with the CF-OPA and optimizing the design, the performance of a nonlinear temporal filter combining cross-polarized wave generation and fs-OPA is comprehensively improved. The experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the CF-OPA scheme, which can generate high-performance cleaned pulses at 1 kHz repetition rate with energy of 340μJ, energy fluctuation below 0.9% (RMS), spectral width of 97 nm (FWHM), Fourier-transform-limited pulse width of 12 fs and temporal contrast better than 10−12. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported temporal walk-off self-compensated quasi-collinear CF-OPA geometry adopting three cascaded BBO crystals, which can be easily generalized to other wavelengths or nonlinear crystals. The above nonlinear temporal filter with a CF-OPA scheme has the rarest comprehensive parameters, which can provide excellent seed pulses for PW and 10 PW class femtosecond laser systems.
