2. Lossless generation of a single-lobe symmetric beam from the output of a CO2 waveguide laser array

Abstract

The undesired side lobes in the far field emission of a linear array of phase coupled lasers can be reduced by using a phase correcting mirror outside the laser array cavity. Even in that case the beam has strong asymmetry and astigmatism, that can be corrected by an off-axis spherical mirror. In this Letter we show the beam obtained experimentally with this kind of correction. The global optical set-up consists of three reflective optical elements producing a nearly lossless transformation of the field distribution from a periodic repetition of small highly divergent sources to a quasi-Gaussian symmetric beam.

Abstract

We report the operating characteristics of a simple annular R.F.-discharge CO 2 laser with particular reference to its focusing properties. The laser resonator consists of the co-axial electrodes structure and two flat mirrors positioned as close as possible to the electrodes, in a sort of near CASE I guided structure.

Abstract

The gas temperature distribution in a CO 2 laser tube with longitudinal dc excitation is investigated by means of an infrared camera. The heat-conduction equation including a loss term with gaussian profile can model the experimentally observed cooling effect induced by stimulated emission.

Abstract

We report evidence of a subcritical pitchfork bifurcation in the operation of a CO2 laser with feedback for increasing feedback strength. The feedback consists in controlling the cavity losses with a signal proportional to the laser output intensity. The experimental results can be explained by means of a linear stability analysis in the framework of a two level model for the laser. A numerical simulation is also presented.

Abstract

A simple and fast interferometric measurement mainly for applications in thermal IR frequency range is presented. This method makes use of a single detector and a single spatial scan and thus reduces both measuring time and hardware complexity. The principle of operator is frequency coding of one transverse spatial dimension.
