Abstract

We demonstrate tunable chromatic dispersion in a 4×40-Gbit/s wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) transmission experiments using single sampled nonlinearly chirped fiber Bragg grating (NC-FBG) with negligible errors from higher order dispersion or two cascaded inverse sampled NC-FBG to cancel the higher order dispersion within the data’s bandwidth. In both the single FBG and cascaded FBG configurations, <3 dB penalty is achieved for all four WDM channels even though the eye is completely closed without compensation. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

We show that the clock signal can be regenerated, or suffer fading, through a dispersive fiber link for NRZ or RZ data, respectively. The clock regenerating and fading effects can be used to monitor the accumulated chromatic dispersion for unambiguous windows of ±900 ps/nm for NRZ systems and ±640 ps/nm for RZ systems at 10 Gbit/s. We also demonstrate dynamic dispersion compensation for both NRZ and RZ data at 10 Gbit/s using the extracted power as a control signal to stretch a nonlinearly chirped fiber Bragg grating. Abstract

A new method on the basis of the coherence theory is presented to analyze the sampled chirped fiber gratings (SCFGs). Comparing with the usual transfer matrix method based on coupling-wave equation, this new method provides a more complete and correct analytical results. 10 channels wavelength SCFG are fabricated, with the dispersion of −1300 ps/nm, the wavelength spacing between two neighboring channels of 0.8 nm and the ripples of time delay of less than 50 ps in the bandwidth of 0.6 nm.
