Nocardiosis is an infectious disease caused by Nocardia spp., mainly affecting immunocompromised hosts. Nocardia infection is not common; especially Nocardia wallacei infection is even rarer. The patient, female, 61 years old, farmer, has been working in the field for a long time and has normal immune function. Her main clinical manifestation was persistent back pain. Chest-enhanced computed tomography showed pulmonary inflammation. Rare pathogen Nocardia wallacei was detected in alveolar lavage fluid using matrix-assisted laser destructive ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. She received treatment with linezolid and was discharged after her condition improved.

With the development and progress of society, people’s average life expectancy has increased, and relevant literature reports that the number of postmenopausal women in China continues to increase. With lifespans extended, the transition period and post-menopause period have become the longest essential period in every woman’s life. The life quality of women troubled by perimenopausal syndrome has been significantly reduced, which also places a burden on families and society. It is well known that hormone replacement therapy plays a vital role in improving women’s menopause-related symptoms and is the most effective medical measure. With research ongoing into the treatment of menopausal symptoms in different patients, dose size, treatment duration, and medication regimens for hormones are still hot topics of discussion. This article reviews the definition, clinical diagnosis, staging, clinical manifestations, and treatment of menopause and explores the current diagnosis and treatment scenarios of perimenopausal syndrome.

Oxidative stress is closely linked to tumor initiation and development, conferring a survival advantage to cancer cells. Therefore, understanding cancer cells’ antioxidant molecular mechanisms is crucial to cancer therapy. In this study, we discovered that H2O2-induced oxidative stress increased Nrf3 expression in colon cancer cells. Overexpression of Nrf3 decreased H2O2-mediated cytotoxicity and apoptosis. Furthermore, Nrf3 reduced reactive oxygen species levels and malondialdehyde concentrations after H2O2 treatment. Mechanistically, H2O2-mediated cell apoptosis involves multiple signaling proteins, including Akt, bcl-2, JNK, and p38. An increase in Nrf3 expression in colon cancer cells treated with H2O2 partly reversed Akt/Bcl-2 inhibition, whereas it decreased activation of p38 and JNK. In addition, we found that increasing Nrf3 decreased stress-associated chemical-induced cell death, resulting in drug resistance. According to these results, Nrf3 is critical for drug resistance and oxidant adaptation.

The monosodium iodoacetate (MIA)-induced osteoarthritis (OA) may lead to cartilage degeneration and histopathological lesions. However, the correlation between inflammatory reaction and subchondral bone remodeling in a rodent osteoarthritic model is ambiguous. In this study, intra-articular injection of MIA was performed in 36 four-week-old specific pathogen-free male Wistar rats to induce OA. After 4 weeks of intervention, changes in intrinsic structural properties of the subchondral bones were measured, and the histological evaluation, as well as biochemical analysis, was conducted. We found that intra-articular injection of MIA increased chondrocyte apoptosis and promoted cartilage matrix degradation, such as cartilage surface defects and shallow or disappearing staining. MIA also induced inflammation, improved the expression of IL-1β, TNF-α, and matrix metalloproteinase, and decreased the expression of cartilage-specific proteins with the extension of modeling time. Meanwhile, the MIA also significantly accelerated the subchondral bone remodeling, as shown by the decreased subchondral bone density, thinning of trabeculae, disordered cartilage structure, and morphology. In conclusion, we have shown that MIA-induced rodent osteoarthritic model would cause decreased subchondral bone density, sparse trabecular bone, and other manifestations of osteoporosis accompanied by an inflammatory response, which would worsen with the progression of modeling time. Our results suggest that different phases of MIA-induced OA are associated with the changes in subchondral bone microstructure and the progression of local inflammation.
