Assisted tree migration has been proposed as a conceptual solution to mitigate lags in biotic responses to anthropogenic climate change. The rationale behind this concept is that tree species currently growing under warmer and drier climates will be more resistant and resilient to the new climatic conditions than tree species naturally growing in currently wetter and colder climates. However, we hypothesize that, by being more stress‐tolerant to warmer and drier conditions, translocated species should exhibit different functional attributes, which could induce important ecological and societal costs and overcome the desired benefits of maintaining wood production and other ecosystem services. We used principal component analysis (PCA) to analyze variation in seven traits of 106 tree and tall shrub species from contrasting latitudinal distributions in western North America and Europe to predict the potential functional changes of forest ecosystems due to the translocation of tree species from low to high latitudes. We show that species from both continents differed primarily by their position on the leaf economy spectrum (LES) and their size traits. Even though, in Europe, differences in LES were significantly correlated to species southern latitudinal positions, in both continents differences in size traits were significantly correlated to latitude. These results suggest that assisted migration by translocating more conservative species of shorter stature in currently cooler climates should decrease the buffering capacity of forest canopies, decrease facilitation for understory species, and increase wildfire risks, whose effects have the potential to accelerate climate warming through negative atmospheric feedback processes. As an alternative solution to assisted migration that may accelerate rather than mitigate climate change, we recommend that foresters gradually diversify the vertical structure and layering of the existing forest canopy to maintain a sustainable water cycle and energy balance between the soil, the tree and the atmosphere without increasing the wildfire risk. Disentangling short‐ and long‐term neighbour effects, using both removal and observational methods within a single experiment, has strongly improved our understanding of the driving mechanisms of plant–plant interactions. However, there has been no attempt to assess two important underlying processes of their changes along gradients, either environmental‐severity (changes in target performance without neighbours) or neighbour‐traits (changes in performance with neighbours) effects, the former previously shown in alpine communities to be involved in competition and the latter in facilitation. We addressed this goal in an experiment conducted in continental saline depressions (sebkhas) from the Mediterranean arid climate of central Tunisia. We quantified short‐ and long‐term effects of dominant shrubs, transplanting three target grass species in open, nurse and removed‐nurse microhabitats of two habitats of different salinity levels in height sebkhas. The design extended greographically from central Tunisia to the Libyan border, 500 km southeastward. We used the relative interaction index to calculate short‐ and long‐term effects before and after the dry summer seasons and environmental‐severity and neighbour‐trait effects. Short‐term effects were slightly negative and long‐term effects strongly positive before the dry summer season in the two habitats. Short‐term effects switched to positive with increasing drought stress, due to an environmental‐severity effect, whereas long‐term effects decreased due to a neighbour‐trait effect. Salinity did not affect neither short‐ nor long‐term shrub effects. Soil moisture measurements showed that both changes were due to vanishing shrub soil engineering‐effects during the summer drought. We conclude that an increase in short‐term facilitation with increasing drought stress through time, apparently supporting the stress gradient hypothesis, might be due to a decrease in long‐term facilitation. Thus, we recommend using, as much as possible, both the removal and observational methods in experiments assessing changes in plant–plant interactions along stress gradients to avoid wrong conclusions. Contrasting phenotypes of alpine cushion species have been recurrently described in several mountain ranges along small‐scale topography gradients, with tight competitive phenotypes in stressful convex topography and loose facilitative phenotypes in sheltered concave topography. The consistency of phenotypic effects along large‐scale climate stress gradients have been proposed as a test of the likely genetic bases of the differences observed at small‐scale. Inversely, plastic phenotypic effects are more likely to vanish at some points along climate stress gradients. We tested this hypothesis for two phenotypes of the alpine cushion species Thylacospermum caespitosum at four points along regional gradients of cold and drought stress in northwest China. We measured the traits of the two cushion phenotypes and quantified their associated plant communities and environmental variables along the regional temperature and aridity gradients. Cushion height, convexity and stem density overall showed significant effect of phenotypes. Difference in tightness of cushions between phenotypes was consistent across climate conditions, whereas differences in cushion convexity and height between phenotypes increased with increasing cold stress. Phenotypic effects on species richness and abundance were consistent along both climate gradients but not effects on species composition, while there were no phenotypic effects on environmental variables. Additionally, RII (relative interaction index) curves were linear along the drought gradient but unimodal along the temperature gradient, likely due to the occurrence of contrasting species pools at the different sites. We conclude that the consistency of phenotypic effects of T. caespitosum was high for species richness and abundance and mainly explained by differences in interference mediated by likely heritable differences in cushion tightness. Additionally, our study shows that the shapes of the relationship between plant responses to neighbours and environmental stresses are not necessarily driven by niche‐based deterministic factors. We used an individual-based spatially-explicit model to assess the role of facilitation and plant strategies in shaping the ‘community biomass–species richness’ relationship. Facilitation had few impacts on community's richness under both the most benign (high community biomass) and the most severe (low community biomass) environments where its intensity was weak. From medium to high environmental severity, facilitation increased community richness, because all plant strategies were facilitated. In contrast, from low to medium environmental severity facilitation decreased community richness, because only the most competitive species were facilitated, which induced a decrease in the richness of the stress-tolerant species overwhelming the increase in richness of the competitive species. Above all, our simulations show how ‘strategy-dependent’ interactions among species combine to shape the humped-back biomass–species richness relationship. It also demonstrates that facilitative effects might have long-term negative effects on species richness, which result is not included in current facilitation models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
