Optimal foraging theory addresses one of the core challenges of ecology: predicting the distribution and abundance of species. Tests of hypotheses of optimal foraging, however, often focus on a single conceptual model rather than drawing upon the collective body of theory, precluding generalization. Here we demonstrate links between two established theoretical frameworks predicting animal movements and resource use: central-place foraging and density-dependent habitat selection. Our goal is to better understand how the nature of critical, centrally placed resources like water (or minerals, breathing holes, breeding sites, etc.) might govern selection for food (energy) resources obtained elsewhere - a common situation for animals living in natural conditions. We empirically test our predictions using movement data from a large herbivore distributed along a gradient of water availability (feral horses, Sable Island, Canada, 2008-2013). Horses occupying western Sable Island obtain freshwater at ponds while in the east horses must drink at self-excavated wells (holes). We studied the implications of differential access to water (time needed for a horse to obtain water) on selection for vegetation associations. Consistent with predictions of density-dependent habitat selection, horses were reduced to using poorer-quality habitat (heathland) more than expected close to water (where densities were relatively high), but were free to select for higher-quality grasslands farther from water. Importantly, central-place foraging was clearly influenced by the type of water-source used (ponds vs. holes, the latter with greater time constraints on access). Horses with more freedom to travel (those using ponds) selected for grasslands at greater distances and continued to select grasslands at higher densities, whereas horses using water holes showed very strong density-dependence in how habitat could be selected. Knowledge of more than one theoretical framework may be required to explain observed variation in foraging behavior of animals where multiple constraints simultaneously influence resource selection. Adult sex ratio (ASR) is a fundamental concept in population and evolutionary biology, with implications for management and conservation. Although ASR is typically measured at the population-level, local mate competition points toward spatial variation in ASR within populations, the causes of which remain unclear. Over five breeding seasons (2008-2012), we tracked the life histories and movements of all male and female feral horses known to be alive (n = 721) on Sable Island, Canada, to investigate determinants of spatially explicit ASRs. We show that local demographic traits (density, adult female abundance, and abundance of unpaired males (e.g. floaters, adult bachelors)) operate together with inter-annual changes in weather to determine asymmetrical ASRs across time and space that deviate from the population-level mean. While accounting for possible confounding effects of unpaired male movements and weather, we also show that local demographics are best explained by different responses to an environmental gradient (distance to surface water). Our results demonstrate that local demographic traits operate as mechanisms by which environmental gradients and weather can shape spatial variation in ASR within wild populations, which has important implications for predicting how opportunities for sexual selection may follow from changes in resource availability and climate. Parasites, of all sorts, can profoundly affect host population dynamics. Parasites commonly cause sex-biased mortality and this can add to their impact. Female-biased mortality in particular can destabilize dynamics and promote population collapse. We previously reported in a correlative study that brown-headed cowbird Molothrus ater brood parasitism of song sparrows Melospiza melodia appears to cause female-biased host nestling mortality. Here, we report results from 'infestation' and 'de-infestation' experiments designed to test whether brood parasitism causes female-biased mortality, and we document the resulting demographic impact using a simulation model. Experimental cowbird infestation of song sparrow nests halved the proportion of female host nestlings (0.31±0.07 vs 0.59±0.06; infested vs unparasitized nests at day 6) replicating the halving reported in naturally cowbird-parasitized nests (0.28±0.01 vs 0.57±0.05; parasitized vs unparasitized). De-infestation of naturally cowbird-parasitized nests in turn wholly eliminated any effect on the proportion of female host nestlings (0.53±0.13 vs 0.54±0.06; de-infested vs unparasitized) confirming that brood parasitism is the cause. This halving of the proportion of females fledging is likely to be as significant as nest predation in affecting population dynamics, based on the elasticities derived from our demographic model (-0.50 vs -0.59). Experimental infestation reduced the testosterone levels, begging behaviour, and body mass of six day old female host nestlings, whereas males were largely unaffected, suggesting that it is the exacerbation of intra-brood competition that may be primarily responsible for the resulting female-biased mortality. The brown-headed cowbird is invasive in most of North America and has been implicated in regional population declines of many native species. We suggest that female-biased host offspring mortality is likely to be commonplace among the 144 host species the cowbird successfully parasitizes, and we discuss the negative implications for songbird conservation, given the projected demographic impact. The cumulative effect of individual-level foraging patterns may have important consequences for ecosystem functioning, population dynamics and conservation. Dietary specialization, whereby an individual exploits a subset of resources available to the rest of the population, can develop in response to environmental or intrinsic population factors. However, accurate assessment of individual diets may be difficult because analyses of recent food intake may misrepresent foraging variability within a heterogeneous environment. We used quantitative fatty acid signature analysis (QFASA) and a novel index of longitudinal dietary change to examine the individual foraging patterns of 64 polar bears Ursus maritimus successively sampled in Western and Southern Hudson Bay between 1994-2003. Estimated diets varied between and within age and sex classes, with adult male polar bears consuming significantly more bearded seal Erignathus barbatus than adult female or subadult bears, whose diets were dominated by ringed seal Pusa hispida. Among individual adult males, consumption of bearded seal accounted for 0-98% of the diet and bearded seal consumption was positively correlated with individual dietary specialization, as measured by proportional similarity ( PSi) to the rest of the population. Most individual diets were consistent from year-to-year and were therefore not a product of short-term heterogeneity in prey distribution. However, a novel dietary change index indicated that adult male polar bears had the most temporally variable diets with 23% of adult males switching their diet from predominantly ringed seal to predominantly bearded seal or vice versa. We conclude that QFASA is well-suited to analyses of individual-level foraging because it reflects an animal's diet over the preceding weeks to months. The subpopulations of bears in this study were near the southern limit of their species range and have experienced negative individual- and population-level impacts related to sea ice loss and climate warming. The nature of the relationship between diversity and stability has become the subject of intense research effort over the last few decades as the role of diversity as a major driver of ecosystem functioning and stability has come to the forefront of ecological interest. Here, we present a meta-analysis of the impact of twelve experimental design factors on the strength and direction of relations between biotic richness and temporal variability at both the aggregate community- and population-level. Based on 35 studies that report 59 community-level and 36 population-level relations, our results show that biotic richness has a highly general stabilizing effect on community properties that are only marginally affected by the nuances of experimental design. In contrast, experimental design factors have a highly significant effect on mean effect sizes and the resulting interpretation of relations between richness and population-level variability. The strongest dichotomous effect was observed based on the method of calculating the response variable, such that when population variability was calculated as the mean variability of populations across all replicates, biotic richness showed a negative (stabilizing) mean effect size. In contrast, when population variability was calculated on a per replicate basis, biotic richness showed a positive (destabilizing) mean effect size. We investigated how ecological realism might impact the outcome of three experimental manipulations of species richness to determine whether the patterns and the mechanisms underlying richness–variability relationships differ as ecological communities are increasingly exposed to external forces that may drive richness–variability patterns in nature. To test for such an effect, we conducted experiments using rock pool meio-invertebrate communities housed in three experimental venues: controlled laboratory microcosms, artificially constructed rock pools in the field, and naturally occurring rock pools in the field. Our results showed that experimental venue can have a strong effect on the outcome of richness manipulation experiments. As ecological realism increased, the strength of the relationship between species richness and community variability declined from 32.9% in the laboratory microcosms to 16.8% in the artificial pools to no effect of species richness on community variability in the natural rock pools. The determinants of community variability also differed as ecological realism increased. In laboratory microcosms, community variability was driven solely by mechanisms related to increasing species richness. In artificial rock pools, community variability was driven by a combination of direct and indirect environmental factors as well as mechanisms related to increasing species richness. In the natural rock pools community variability was independent of species richness and was only related to environmental factors. In summary, we found that stabilizing mechanisms associated with species interactions were influential in establishing species richness–variability relations only in the less realistic experimental venues (the laboratory microcosms and the artificial rock pools in the field), and that these mechanisms diminished in importance as ecological realism and complexity of the experimental venue increased. Our results suggest that the effects of diversity might be more difficult to detect in natural systems due to the combined effects of biotic and abiotic forcing, which can mask our ability to detect richness effects. Enrichment (increasing K) destabilizes simple consumer–resource interactions, but increasing food web complexity in various ways can remove this paradox of enrichment. We varied resources and number of omnivorous predators (mosquitoes) and tested for effects on the stability (persistence and temporal variability) of microfaunal populations living in pitcher plants. Top-down (omnivorous) effects were destabilizing, decreasing the persistence time of a rotifer, Habrotrocha rosa, and perhaps a microflagellate, Bodo sp. Enrichment effects were more complex, in part due to effects of shredding midges on resource availability, and in part due to interactions with predation. The persistence of Bodo increased with resource availability (more bacteria due to shredding by midges; no paradox of enrichment). Increasing resources by adding ants decreased persistence of H. rosa when mosquitoes were rare (paradox of enrichment), but the effect was reversed in leaves with significant colonization by mosquitoes. Thus, in the microfaunal community of pitcher plants, omnivorous predation tends to be destabilizing, and also tends to remove the paradox of enrichment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In large marine predators, foraging entails movement. Quantitative models reveal how behaviours can mediate individual movement, such that deviations from a random pattern may reveal specific search tactics or behaviour. Using locations for 52 grey seals fitted with satellite-linked recorders on Sable Island; we modeled movement as a correlated random walk (CRW) for individual animals, at two temporal scales. Mean move length, turning angle, and net squared displacement (R2n: the rate of change in area over time) at successive moves over 3 to 10 months were calculated. The distribution of move lengths of individual animals was compared to a Lévy distribution to determine if grey seals use a Lévy flight search tactic. Grey seals exhibited three types of movement as determined by CRW model fit: directed movers – animals displaying directed long distance travel that were significantly underpredicted by the CRW (23% of animals); residents – animals remaining in the area surrounding Sable Island that were overpredicted by the model (29% of animals); and correlated random walkers – those (48% of animals) in which movement was predicted by the CRW model. Kernel home range size differed significantly among all three movement types, as did travel speed, mean move length, mean R2n and total distance traveled. Sex and season of deployment were significant predictors of movement type, with directed movers more likely to be male and residents more likely to be female. Only 30% of grey seals fit a Lévy distribution, which suggests that food patches used by the majority of seals are not randomly distributed. Intraspecific variation in movement behaviour is an important characteristic in grey seal foraging ecology, underscoring the need to account for such variability in developing models of habitat use and predation. Group living has both costs and benefits for plant-feeding insects, but defence against predators is the most widely acknowledged benefit. Gregarious folivores typically have warning coloration and elaborate anti-predator defences. Do these defences protect these species from predation? To see if protection from predators generally results from gregariousness, I compared the shapes of published survivorship curves of externally feeding, gregarious and solitary Lepidoptera and Symphyta. Gregarious species are less likely than solitary species to die in the larval stages. However, solitary species that have anti-predator defences do not have higher larval survival compared to gregarious species. This result, along with evidence from experimental manipulations of group size, suggests that repellent defences per se do not increase survival of gregarious larvae. Group behaviour is undoubtedly important in affecting the higher larval survival of gregarious species, but we currently cannot determine whether predator learning, dilution of risk, or rapid development contribute most to increasing survival. It has been clear for the last 20 yr that both competitive ability and physiological competence on the intertidal gradient of rocky shores determine the zoned distribution of fucoid seaweeds in the North Atlantic. However to this point, there has been no concept integrating these functions for seaweed vegetation in a single mechanistic explanation. Keddy's competitive hierarchy model, which has not been testedin marine systems (i.e. not on seaweed vegetation) provides an explanation for the zonation of plant species on environmental gradients. The model proposes that competitive abilities of species on a stress or resource gradient are inversely related to fundamental niche breadths. We tested 2 assumptions of the model to determine whether it provided a comprehensive explanation of zonation of 3 Fucus species on the island of Helgoland in the North Sea. The 2 assumptions translate into specific predictions for the Fucus assemblage (where F. serratusoccurs on the low shore, F. spiralis on the high shore, and F. vesiculosus in between): 1. competitive ranking is F. serratus > F. vesiculosus > F. spiralis; 2. fundamental niche breadth rankings are the reverse of competitive ability rankings. Pairwise competition experiments were done in the field. A highly modified substitutive design was used, in order to take into account the shortcomings of this approach. The empirically derived competitive hierarchy did not fit prediction 1. Transplant experiments with adults and juveniles provided results contrary to prediction 2. Since none of the assumptions of the model fit, it cannot be used to provide a mechanistic explanation for thezonation of Fucus species on Helgoland. Unlike other important models of competition, Keddy's approach does not claim universal validity in all communities. This means that it requires empirical testing in each species assemblage, and more importantly, that the negative outcome reported here does not invalidate the concept in general. Climate change is having multiple impacts on marine species characterized by sedentary adult and pelagic larval phases, from increasing adult mortality to changes in larval duration and ocean currents. Recent studies have shown impacts of climate change on species persistence through direct effects on individual survival and development, but few have considered the indirect effects mediated by ocean currents and species traits such as pelagic larval duration. We used a density‐dependent and stochastic metapopulation model to predict how changes in adult mortality and dynamic connectivity can affect marine metapopulation stability. We analyzed our model with connectivity data simulated from a biophysical ocean model of the northeast Pacific coast forced under current (1998–2007) and future (2068–2077) climate scenarios in combination with scenarios of increasing adult mortality and decreasing larval duration. Our results predict that changes of ocean currents and larval duration mediated by climate change interact in complex and opposing directions to shape local mortality and metapopulation connectivity with synergistic effects on regional metapopulation stability: while species with short larval duration are most sensitive to temperature‐driven reduction in larval duration, the response of species with longer larval duration are mostly mediated by changes in both the mean and variance of larval connectivity driven by ocean currents. Our results emphasize the importance of considering the spatiotemporal structure of connectivity in order to predict how the multiple effects of climate change will impact marine populations.
