The accumulation of non-structural leaf carbohydrates is one of the most consistent plant responses to elevated CO2. It has been found in both fast-and slow-growing plants and is largely independent of the duration of exposure. Changes in leaf quality are thus to be expected, irrespective of other plant responses to atmospheric CO2 enrichment. However, there is no experimental evidence from tropical forests, the biome with the largest biomass carbon pool. Here we report in situ mesophyll responses of mature tropical trees to a doubling of CO2. Individually CO2-enriched leaves on 25 to 35-m-tall forest trees living at 26–35°C can be assumed to experience little sink limitation, and so, may be expected to exhibit no or very little carbohydrate accumulation. We tested this hypothesis using the leaf cup method on leaves accessible via the canopy crane of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in a semi-deciduous tropical forest in Panama. We also investigated the influence of the leaf-specific light regime, another possible environmental determinant of leaf carbon gain and mobile leaf carbohydrates. Total non-structural carbohydrates (TNC) reached a new steady state concentration after less than 4 days of exposure to twice ambient CO2 concentration. Against expectation, all four tree species investigated (Anacardium excelsum, Cecropia longipes, C. peltata, Ficus insipida) accumulated significant amounts of TNC (+41 to +61%) under elevated CO2. The effect was stronger at the end of the daylight period (except for Ficus), but was still significant in all four species at the end of the dark period. In contrast, neither artificial nor natural shading affected leaf TNC. Taken together, these observations suggest that TNC accumulation reflects a mesophyll-bound tissue response specific to elevated CO2, presumably unrelated to sink limitations. Thus, leaves of tropical forests seem not to be an exception, and will most likely contain more non-structural carbohydrates in a CO2-rich world.

Heat and stable isotope tracers were used to study axial and radial water transport in relation to sapwood anatomical characteristics and internal water storage in four canopy tree species of a seasonally dry tropical forest in Panama. Anatomical characteristics of the wood and radial profiles of sap flow were measured at the base, upper trunk, and crown of a single individual of Anacardium excelsum, Ficus insipida, Schefflera morototoni, and Cordia alliodora during two consecutive dry seasons. Vessel lumen diameter and vessel density did not exhibit a consistent trend axially from the base of the stem to the base of the crown. However, lumen diameter decreased sharply from the base of the crown to the terminal branches. The ratio of vessel lumen area to sapwood cross-sectional area was consistently higher at the base of the crown than at the base of the trunk in A. excelsum, F. insipida and C. alliodora, but no axial trend was apparent in S. morototoni. Radial profiles of the preceding wood anatomical characteristics varied according to species and the height at which the wood samples were obtained. Radial profiles of sap flux density measured with thermal dissipation sensors of variable length near the base of the crown were highly correlated with radial profiles of specific hydraulic conductivity (k(s)) calculated from xylem anatomical characteristics. The relationship between sap flux density and k(s) was species-independent. Deuterium oxide (D(2)O) injected into the base of the trunk of the four study trees was detected in the water transpired from the upper crown after only 1 day in the 26-m-tall C. alliodora tree, 2 days in the 28-m-tall F. insipida tree, 3 days in the 38-m-tall A. excelsum tree, and 5 days in the 22-m-tall S. morototoni tree. Radial transport of injected D(2)O was detected in A. excelsum, F. insipida and S. morototoni, but not C. alliodora. The rate of axial D(2)O transport, a surrogate for maximum sap velocity, was positively correlated with the predicted sapwood k(s) and with tree height normalized by the relative diurnal water storage capacity. Residence times for the disappearance of the D(2)O tracer in transpired water ranged from 2 days in C. alliodora to 22 days in A. excelsum and were positively correlated with a normalized index of diurnal water storage capacity. Capacitive exchange of water between stem storage compartments and the transpiration stream thus had a profound influence on apparent rates of axial water transport, the magnitude of radial water movement, and the retention time in the tree of water taken up by the roots. The inverse relationship between internal water exchange capacity and k(s) was consistent with a trade-off contributing to stability of leaf water status through highly efficient water transport at one extreme and release of stored water at the other extreme.

We evaluated both the photosynthetic plasticity and acclimation to light of seedlings of five co-occurring tropical tree species in the Moraceae,Cecropia obtusifolia, Ficus insipida, Poulsenia armata, Brosimum alicastrum, andPseudolmedia oxyphyllaria. Distinct differences in the species' abilities to respond to increasing irradiance correlated with their known habitat breadths and successional status. The early successinalsCecropia andFicus exhibited the highest photosynthetic rates and conductance values in high light. There was a several-fold difference in assimilation across light regimes, consistent with a high physiological plasticity. When individuals grown at low light were transferred to higher irradiances, seedlings of bothCecropia andFicus produced leaves which photosynthesized at rates as high or higher than those of plants continuously grown in high light, indicating a high photosynthetic acclimation potential. In contrast, the late successionals were characterized by both a more restricted physiological plasticity and acclimation potential. Higher light levels resulted in only moderate increases in assimilation among the late successionals, and onlyBrosimum acclimated fully to increased irradiances. NeitherPoulsenia norPseudolmedia increased appreciably their photosynthetic rates when transferred to high light. This suggests that acclimation potential cannot always be inferred from plasticity responses, and calls for a reevaluation of arguments developed solely from plasticity studies. Finally, differences between the early and late successional species in the allocation of nitrogen into RuBP carboxylase and thylakoid nitrogen pools or non-photosynthetic compounds are suggested by the distinct relationships between maximum photosynthetic capacity and nitrogen content.

Wild howler monkeys were fed natural fruit and leaf diets in order to determine their ability to assimilate minerals (Ca, P, Mg, Si, Sr, Ba, Fe, Al, Mn, B, Cu, Li, V), and to assess their water and electrolyte budgets by the balance method. Results were extrapolated to the field situation so that the nutritional status of free-living monkeys could be examined in relation to their diet. The figs and young leaves of Ficus insipida and F. yoponensis trees (the most important foods in the dry season) provide adequate amounts of most required minerals, and an abundance of water. However, the copper requirement would not be met by this diet, which also provides only marginal amounts of sodium and phosphorus. These deficiencies may be corrected by consuming other available food items that are rich in Cu, Na or P. These results help explain the diversity that has been observed in the diet of wild howler monkeys, and suggest that these herbivores should feed selectively in order to obtain a nutritionally adequate diet.

Neotropical fruit bats consume figs (Ficus spp.) and other fruit in small bites which they suck dry and drop as pellets. The swallowed juice transits the short digestive system in 0.5 h or less. The efficiency of this unusual mode of feeding was determined by comparing the nutritional content of pellets, feces and urine of captive Artibeus jamaicensis to that of the wild figs (Ficus insipida) they had been fed. The bats extracted 57% of the wet weight and 37% of the dry weight of the fruit. The swallowed juice contained 40% of the non-fiber carbohydrate present in whole figs and was digested almost completely. Of the 160±37 seeds per fig, roughly 80% were swallowed, but almost all of these were passed intact in the feces. Overall 25–30% of the metabolizable calories in the figs were swallowed and absorbed. This mode of feeding enables the bats to extract the readily digestable calories from up to 2x their 50 g body weights in figs each night while never having to fly with more than a few grams of food in their guts at any one time.
