We have analyzed the relationship between wind variability and sea level anomalies (SLA) on the Southwestern Atlantic Continental Shelf, focusing on sub-annual temporal scales. For this, we tested the capability of gridded altimetry to represent wind-driven SLA and compared results using an oceanographic model and tide gauge data. The present study used coherence analysis to analyze frequencies for which SLA and wind stress are coherent. The altimetry-SLA were found to have less energy below the three-month period compared to the model SLA. The coherence of along-shore wind stress and altimetry SLA was only significant for > 50 days (d), while the model SLA showed significant agreement in all periods considered, 20 d to annual. We further showed that geostrophic velocities on the continental shelf agreed significantly with SLA for > 50 d. As a result of an Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis, we found that the second mode is highly coherent with the along-shore wind stress and accounts for 18.1% and 10.7% of variability in the model and altimetry sea level anomalies, respectively. The spatial distribution, and the monthly and seasonal variability of mesoscale eddy observations derived from the AVISO eddy atlas are assessed in the Caribbean Sea during 1993–2019. The average lifetime for the whole set of eddies is 62 ± 37 days, mean amplitude of 7 ± 4 cm for cyclonic and 7 ± 4 cm for anticyclonic and mean radius of 100 ± 31 km for cyclonic and 108 ± 32 km for anticyclonic. Cyclonic eddies are on average more nonlinear than anticyclonic ones. The spatio-temporal variability in the number of eddy observations is evaluated against the Mean Eddy Kinetic Energy (MEKE) derived from geostrophic currents as well as from seasonal winds. Spatial distribution of eddy observations is correlated with MEKE while the migration of the intertropical convergence zone explains the advection of eddies towards the southern part of the basin. Coastal regions are vulnerable areas with often high population density, as well as tourism and maritime activities that may have negative impact on the environment. From a physical point of view, coastal areas may be characterized by high gradient topography and irregular coastline shapes resulting in complex dynamic systems. The monitoring of coastal circulation becomes necessary to support coastal management and to understand the high variability of the dynamics. The simultaneous use of comprehensive observational systems and numerical models may compensate the drawback of each method used separately. The Toulon coastal area is under investigation in this paper by means of HF RADAR and ADCP observations coupled with nested models. The integration of the different data sets allows the monitoring of the coastal ocean continuum from regional oceans and shelf areas. Summer and winter 2018 data are analyzed to depict the seasonal variability of the regional circulation mainly characterized by the geostrophic Northern boundary Current, the wind-driven bay circulation and the connectivity between the bay, the surrounding Marine Protected Area and the open sea. An understanding of the oceanic response to tropical cyclones is of importance for studies on climate change, ecological variability and environmental protection. Hurricane Irma (2017, Atlantic Ocean) broke many records, including the fact that it was the first category 5 hurricane making landfall in Cuba since 1924. In this study, we assess the oceanic response of the waters of the Cuban Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and the eastern Gulf of Mexico (GoM) to the passage of this hurricane. Overall, Irma led to a weak sea surface cooling in the EEZ, which was associated with the thermal structure of its waters and the fact that it was affected by the left-side quadrants of this hurricane. This cooling was driven by mixing and upwelling processes. In contrast, the chlorophyll-a (chl-a) concentration increase was comparable with climatological records, suggesting that horizontal advection of coastal waters and entrainment of chl-a rich waters from remote regions of the GoM influenced the post-storm chl-a concentration. Moreover, Irma increased the chl-a concentration in the northeastern GoM and stimulated the offshore transport of these chl-a-rich waters to the interior GoM. A high chl-a plume (HCP) extended southward across the eastern GoM during the first post-storm week of Irma, and these waters reached the northwestern Cuban coast following the Loop Current. An intensification of the geostrophic currents of an anticyclonic eddy at the upper front of the Loop Current, the formation of an anticyclonic-cyclonic eddy pair in the northeastern GoM and wind-driven advection governed the extension of this HCP. To study the water dynamics in the western Bering Sea, the time series of geostrophic velocities derived from satellite altimetry, Global total current (Copernicus Globcurrent) velocities, Argo buoys, and ship, borne data are analyzed. We demonstrate that the surface currents in the study area are characterized by a significant seasonal and interannual variability. In January, the southwestern currents are prevailing in the western Bering Sea, the geostrophic currents are connected to the continental slope, and mesoscale anticyclonic movement of waters is observed on the shelf. In July, the surface flow is oriented to the northeast along the continental slope, and cyclonic water movement prevails on the shelf. The formation of mesoscale anticyclones in late winter – early spring – is related to the supply of low-temperature and low-salinity Bering Sea shelf water. The temporal variability of the direction and current velocity in the western part of the Bering Sea during the summer period is associated with the wind and coastal upwelling. The presence of coastal upwelling and eddies should be considered as one of the factors leading to the high concentration of chlorophyll a on a shelf and continental slope in the summer. Nitrate interleaving structures were observed below the mixed layer during a cruise to the Kuroshio Extension in October 2009. In this paper, we investigate the formation mechanisms for these vertical nitrate anomalies, which may be an important source of nitrate to the oligotrphoc surface waters south of the Kuroshio Extension Front. We found that nitrate concentrations below the main stream of the Kuroshio Extension were elevated compared to the ambient water of the same density ( σ = 23.5-25). This appears to be analogous to the 'nutrient stream' below the mixed layer, associated with the Gulf Stream. Strong turbulence was observed above the vertical nitrate anomaly, and we found that this can drive a large vertical turbulent nitrate flux $>\mathcal {O}$ (1 mmol N m day). A realistic, high-resolution (2 km) numerical simulation reproduces the observed Kuroshio nutrient stream and nitrate interleaving structures, with similar lateral and vertical scales. The model results suggest that the nitrate interleaving structures are first generated at the western side of the meander crest on the south side of the Kuroshio Extension, where the southern tip of the mixed layer front is under frontogenesis. Lagrangian analyses reveal that the vertical shear of geostrophic and subinertial ageostrophic flow below the mixed layer tilts the existing along-isopycnal nitrate gradient of the Kuroshio nutrient stream to form nitrate interleaving structures. This study suggests that the multi-scale combination of (i) the lateral stirring of the Kuroshio nutrient stream by developed mixed layer fronts during fall to winter, (ii) the associated tilting of along-isopycnal nitrate gradient of the nutrient stream by subinertial shear, which forms vertical interleaving structures, and (iii) the strong turbulent diffusion above them, may provide a route to supply nutrients to oligotrophic surface waters on the south side of the Kuroshio Extension. Applying segment-wise altimetry-based gravest empirical mode method to expendable bathythermograph temperature, Argo salinity, and altimetric sea surface height data in March, June, and November from San Francisco to near Japan (30 N, 145 E) via Honolulu, we estimated the component of the heat transport variation caused by change in the southward interior geostrophic flow of the North Pacific subtropical gyre in the top 700 m layer during 1993-2012. The volume transport-weighted temperature ( T ) is strongly dependent on the season. The anomaly of T from the mean seasonal variation, whose standard deviation is 0.14C, was revealed to be caused mainly by change in the volume transport in a potential density layer of 25.0−25.5 σ . The anomaly of T was observed to vary on a decadal or shorter, i.e., quasi-decadal (QD), timescale. The QD-scale variation of T had peaks in 1998 and 2007, equivalent to the reduction in the net heat transport by 6 and 10 TW, respectively, approximately 1 year before those of sea surface temperature (SST) in the warm pool region, east of the Philippines. This suggests that variation in T affects the warm pool SST through modification of the heat balance owing to the entrainment of southward transported water into the mixed layer. The flow of dense water in a V-shaped laboratory-scale canyon is investigated by using a non-hydrostatic numerical ocean model with focus on the effects of rotation. By using a high-resolution model, a more detailed analysis of plumes investigated in the laboratory (Deep-Sea Res I 55:1021-1034 2008) for laminar flow is facilitated. The inflow rates are also increased to investigate plume structure for higher Reynolds numbers. With rotation, the plumes will lean to the side of the canyon, and there will be cross-canyon geostrophic currents and Ekman transports. In the present study, it is found that the cross-canyon velocities are approximately 5 % of the down-canyon velocities over the main body of the plume for the rotational case. With rotation, the flow of dense water through the body of the plume and into the plume head is reduced. The plume head becomes less developed, and the speed of advance of the head is reduced. Fluid parcels near the top of the plume will to a larger extent be left behind the faster flowing dense core of the plume in a rotating system. Near the top of the plume, the cross-canyon velocities change direction. Inside the plume, the cross-flow is up the side of the canyon, and above the interface to the ambient there is a compensating cross-flow down the side of the canyon. This means that parcels of fluid around the interface become separated. Parcels of fluid around the interface with small down-canyon velocity components and relative large cross-canyon components will follow a long helix-like path down the canyon. It is found that the entrainment coefficients often are larger in the rotational experiments than in corresponding experiments without rotation. The effects of rotation and higher inflow rates on the areal patterns of entrainment velocities are demonstrated. In this paper, the physical cause of why the eddy kinetic energy (EKE) in the upstream Kuroshio Extension (KE) region is strong (weak) during a large (small) jet meandering period is studied by using the satellite altimeter data and constructing an eddy-dipole mode interaction theory from a reduced gravity shallow water wave quasi-geostrophic vorticity equation. It is found that the large KE jet meander corresponds to a large-scale positive-over-negative dipole SSH anomaly (KED mode, hereafter), a double-branch jet with a weak strength and a strong EKE in the upstream KE region, while the small jet meander corresponds to a negative-over-positive dipole anomaly (KED mode, hereafter), a strong single-branch jet, and a weak EKE. Further diagnostics using this new eddy-dipole mode interaction theory reveals that the horizontal advection and KED deformation field can change the eddy activity in the upstream KE region. When the KED mode is amplified by mesoscale eddies, the EKE grows by extracting energy from the KED deformation (shearing and stretching) field and due to a reduced eastward advection, thus showing a high EKE level during the KED mode (large jet meander) episode. In contrast, when the KED mode is intensified, the kinetic energy of the eddy weakens by losing its energy to the KED deformation field and by an enhanced eastward advection, thus showing a low EKE level during the KED mode (small jet meander) episode. Because the KED mode shows a clear decadal variation due to the modulation of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, both the KE jet and EKE exhibit inevitably a distinct decadal variability. In the western subarctic North Pacific, a wind-driven cyclonic circulation, called the western subarctic gyre (WSAG), exists. We examined year-to-year changes of the gyre and hydrographic structures, applying the altimetry-based gravest empirical mode (AGEM) method to hydrographic and altimetric sea surface height (SSH) data, and relation to the in situ variation of the temperature minimum layer, i.e., the dichothermal layer, depth at station K2 (47 N, 160 E). The AGEM-based geostrophic volume transport and the streamfunction of the WSAG in the top 1000-dbar layer show that the gyre changes substantially. From the late 1990s to the mid-2000s, the gyre shrunk northward. Due to the shrinkage, the halocline bottom, which is equivalent to the top of the main pycnocline, deepens at K2 outside the central part of the gyre. The downward displacement of the dichothermal layer at K2 was found to be significantly related to that of the underlying halocline due to the northward shrinkage of the WSAG. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Based on the satellite altimeter data, it is found that the topography trapped wave (TTW) propagates along the continental shelf in the northern South China Sea (NSCS). The TTW obviously slows down while passing by the Dongsha Islands. Using a quasi-geostrophic equation including the topography effect, we found that the topographic gradient induced by the Dongsha Islands determines the propagation speed, leading to the slowdown of the TTW. In past studies, Lagrangian stirring of surface tracer fields by altimetric surface geostrophic currents has been performed in different mid- to high-latitude regions, showing good results in reconstructing finer scale tracer patterns. Here, we explore the pertinence of the technique in the western equatorial Pacific and in the subtropical southwest Pacific. Initial conditions are derived from weekly gridded low-resolution temperature and salinity fields based on in situ hydrographic data. Validation of the reconstructed fine-scale surface tracer fields is performed using satellite AMSRE Sea Surface Temperature data and high-resolution ship thermosalinograph data. We test two kinds of Lagrangian advection. The standard one-way advection leads to an increased error as the advection time increases, due to the missing physics, such as air-sea fluxes or non-geostrophic dynamics. A second 'backward-forward' advection technique is explored to reduce this bias in the tracer field, with improved results. In the subtropical southwest Pacific Ocean, the mesoscale temperature and salinity fronts are well represented by both Lagrangian advection techniques over a short 7- to 14-day advection time, including westward-propagating features not apparent in the initial fields. In the tropics, the results are less clear. The validation is hampered by the complex vertical stratification, and the lateral stirring technique is limited by the pertinence of using geostrophic surface current fields in the tropics. We suggest that the passive lateral stirring technique is efficient in regions with moderate to high mesoscale energy, where mesoscale surface tracer and surface height fields are correlated. An ocean circulation model is run using two different idealized equatorial basin configurations under steady wind forcing. Both model versions produce bands of vertically alternating zonal flow at depth, similar to observed Equatorial Deep Jets (EDJs) and with a time scale corresponding to that of the gravest equatorial basin mode for the dominant baroclinic vertical normal mode. Both model runs show evidence for enhanced variability in the surface signature of the North Equatorial Counter Current (NECC) with the same time scale. We also find the same link between the observed NECC and the EDJs in the Atlantic by comparing the signature of the EDJ in moored zonal velocity data at 23° W on the equator with the signature of the NECC in geostrophic velocities from altimeter data. We argue that the presence of a peak in variability in the NECC associated with the EDJ basin mode period is evidence that the influenceatthis time scale is upward, from the EDJ to the NECC. The mean flow and meso-scale eddy variability in the region around the Grand Banks of Newfoundland (GBN) are quantified by analyzing surface drifter observations, mean dynamic topography (MDT), along-track satellite altimeter observations, and the solutions of two high-resolution ocean models. By increasing the horizontal resolution from 6.5 km (CREG12) to 2.2 km (GBN36), the modeled mean kinetic energy (MKE) decreases and the eddy kinetic energy (EKE) increases in the study area. GBN36 obtains the MKE of surface geostrophic currents and total currents similar to that derived from MDT and drifter data, whereas CREG12 overestimates these quantities by 40-53 %. CREG12 and GBN36 underestimate the EKE of surface geostrophic currents by 46 and 30 %, respectively, with respect to the EKE derived from along-track altimeter data. The models do not reproduce the strong eddy activity in the Gulf Stream and its downstream region, possibly related to a northward shift of the Gulf Stream position by 0.5° in latitude compared with observations. Both models obtain wavenumber spectra of sea level anomaly in close agreement with the spectrum derived from along-track altimeter data, with a slope of −5 at wavelengths near 100 km on logarithmic spectral density scales. Frontogenesis and frontal instabilities in the mixed layer are known to be important processes in the formation of submesoscale features. We study the seasonality of such processes in the Gulf Stream (GS) region. To approach this problem, a realistic simulation with the Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model is integrated for 18 months at two horizontal resolutions: a high-resolution (1/48°) simulation able to resolve part of the submesoscale regime and the full range of mesoscale dynamics, and a coarser resolution (1/12°) case, in which submesoscales are not resolved. Results provide an insight into submesoscale dynamics in the complex GS region. A clear seasonal cycle is observed, with submesoscale features mostly present during winter. The submesoscale field is quantitatively characterized in terms of deviation from geostrophy and 2D dynamics. The limiting and controlling factor in the occurrence of submesoscales appears to be the depth of the mixed layer, which controls the reservoir of available potential energy available at the mesoscale fronts that are present most of the year. Atmospheric forcings are the main energy source behind submesoscale formation, but mostly indirectly through mixed layer deepening. The mixed layer instability scaling suggested in the (Fox-Kemper et al., J Phys Oceanogr 38:1145-1165, ) parametrization appears to hold, indicating that the parametrization is appropriate even in this complex and mesoscale dominated area. The interaction of meddies with a complex distribution of seamounts is studied in a three-layer quasi-geostrophic model on the f-plane. This study aims at understanding if and how this seamount chain can represent a barrier to the propagation of these eddies and how it can be involved in their decay. The eddies are idealized as vortex patches in the middle layer, interacting with a regional cyclonic current and with ten idealized seamounts. The numerical code is based on the contour surgery technique. The initial position, radius, shape, number and polarity of the eddies are varied. The main results are the following: (1) Though they do not describe the unsteady flow, the streamlines of the regional and topographic flow provide a useful estimate of the vortex trajectories, in particular towards the major seamounts, where stronger velocity shears are expected. (2) The tallest and widest seamounts which have the largest vorticity reservoir are able to considerably erode the vortices, but also to draw anticyclones towards the seamount top. The ability of narrower seamounts to erode vortices is related to their multiplicity. (3) Only 1/3 of the anticyclones with about 30-km radius reach the southern boundary of the seamount chain, and their erosion is larger than 50 %. The other anticyclones are either completely eroded or trapped over a wide seamount top. Cyclones are less affected by seamounts because they oppose the topographic draft towards the seamount top and they drift along the side of the seamount. (4) Large vortices resist topographic erosion more efficiently. The rate of erosion grows from a few percent to about 35-50 % as the vortex radius decreases from about 60 to 30 km. Small cyclones are not eroded, contrary to small anticyclones (which completely decay), in relation with the different trajectories of these eddies in the vicinity of the seamounts. (5) The detailed vortex shape does not appear critical for their evolution, if they are close enough to the seamount chain initially. The interaction between a group of vortices initially north of the seamount chain can modify their trajectory to such an extent that they finally avoid collision with seamounts. (6) Finally, meddy trajectories across the Horseshoe Seamounts (data from the AMUSE experiment) show qualitative similarity with the vortex paths in the model. Idealized studies of island wakes often use a cylinder-like island to generate the wake, whereas most realistic studies use a close representation of the oceanic bathymetry immersed in a complex representation of the 'ambient' geophysical flows. Here, a system of multiple islands was placed into numerical and experimental channels, in order to focus on the complexity of the archipelago wake, including (a) the influence of small neighboring islands and (b) the role of the island-shelf. The numerical geostrophic and stratified channel was built using a three-dimensional primitive equation model, considering a realistic representation of the Madeira archipelago bathymetry, with prescribed initial and boundary conditions. Results from the simulations show that the neighboring islands alter the near-field wake. Small eddies generated by the neighboring islands lead to destabilization of the shear layers of the larger island. Laboratory experiments carried out in the Coriolis rotating tank corroborated this near-field disruptive mechanism. The neighboring island perturbation effect was present whatever the direction of the incoming flow, but under different regimes. North-south wakes produced geostrophic eddies (≥ R), whereas west-east wakes produced (exclusively) ageostrophic submesoscale eddies (< < R) which traveled offshore with wave-like motion. The archipelago shelf contributed to the asymmetric vertical migration of oceanic vorticity. Cyclonic vorticity dominated the surface dynamics, whereas anticyclonic circulation prevailed at the bottom part of the linearly stratified upper layer. The wind-driven circulation in the northwestern Pacific and the South China Sea (SCS) is simplified as a two-layer, quasi-geostrophic model in two rectangular basins connected by an idealized strait. This model is used to investigate the impact of the western boundary current (WBC) on the adjacent marginal sea. The variability of the circulation in the two basins is investigated with a high resolution and at low viscosity, which allows the numerical solution to resolve mesoscale eddy forcing. The model ocean is driven by the time-independent asymmetric wind stress acting on the idealized Pacific (large basin) only. Under the reference parameters used in this study, the WBC can intrude into the idealized SCS (small basin) in the form of a loop current, shedding eddies regularly. The rate of eddy shedding is nearly constant throughout the entire integration time of the model; however, the intensity of the eddy-shedding exhibits multiple timescale variability ranging from quasi-biennial to decadal timescale. A set of sensitivity experiments demonstrate that our results are robust against changes to model parameters and geometry. Multivariate spectral analysis is used to extract the spatiotemporal feature of the variability. Joint analysis for the two basins shows that the circulation in the idealized SCS is significantly impacted by the variability at decadal (15-year), interannual (5-7-year and quasi-biennial), and quasi-annual timescales. The spatial structures of the modes of variablility suggest that the variance in position of the WBC, combined with mesoscale activity, act to influence the low-frequency modes of the idealized SCS. Coastal mesoscale eddies were evidenced during a high-frequency radar campaign in the Gulf of Lions (GoL), northwestern Mediterranean Sea, from June 2005 to January 2007. These anticyclonic eddies are characterized by repeated and intermittent occurrences as well as variable lifetime. This paper aims at studying the link between these new surface observations with similar structures suggested at depth by traditional acoustic Doppler current profiler measurements and investigates the eddy generation and driving mechanisms by means of an academic numerical study. The influence of the wind forcing on the GoL circulation and the eddy generation is analyzed, using a number of idealized configurations in order to investigate the interaction with river discharge, buoyancy, and bathymetric effects. The wind forcing is shown to be crucial for two different generation mechanisms: A strong northerly offshore wind (Mistral) generates a vortex column due to the bathymetric constraint of a geostrophic barotropic current, which can surface after the wind relaxes; a southerly onshore wind generates a freshwater bulge from the Rhône river discharge, which detaches from the coast and forms a well-defined surface anticyclonic eddy based on buoyancy gradients. In this study, the Navidad current, which flows along the northern coast of Spain in winter, is observed and characterized using coastal altimetry data over the period 1992-2002. This coastal current, marked by a strong interannual variability, is associated with eastward transport of warm waters along the shelf slope. Specific data editing and processing strategies have been applied to the along-track altimeter data, which allows us to retrieve altimetric sea level anomalies closer to the coast, with a better spatial coverage and improved quality when compared with standard altimetric products. The current variability observed upstream by in situ time series after November 1996 is well reproduced by the satellite across-track surface geostrophic current anomalies up until September 1999; this agreement degrades later in time. The combined use of satellite-derived current anomalies and sea-surface temperature anomalies allows us to develop indices of Navidad occurrences, in the first long-term, systematic survey of that current based on a multi-sensor approach. The satellite analyses confirm the previously identified Navidad occurrences in winter of 1995-1996, 1997-1998, and 2000-2001. Furthermore, a weak Navidad event was identified in winter 1996-1997. These four winters are associated with a negative North Atlantic Oscillation index in the previous fall, but the intensity of the Navidad is not correlated to the amplitude of that index. Using 1-year simulated data from extended Prince William Sound (PWS) nowcast/forecast system, both barotropic and baroclinic transports through two-strait, semi-enclosed PWS are examined. With major tidal constituents removed, hourly time series of volume transports through two straits are significantly correlated with net transport well balanced by the time rate of change of the PWS spatial-mean sea level. A transition frequency band occurs within the coherence function of hourly volume transports, which is characterized by a nearly 180° phase shift between low-frequency (>30 h) and high-frequency (<6 h) bands. The transition band is implicitly related to the horizontally divergent and horizontally non-divergent flows inside the Sound. Further investigation of monthly and annual mean volume transports indicates strong seasonal variability of flows through two straits. On the other hand, baroclinic transport through PWS demonstrates the transition between a two-layered flow structure during the wintertime and a well-defined three-layered structure, i.e., inflow in both the surface and bottom layer with outflow in the intermediate layer, in the remainder of the year. This three-layer exchange flow is determined to be mainly buoyancy-driven, geostrophic flow, and thus largely affected by seasonal variability of buoyancy over the shelf and PWS. Ocean circulation models based on triangular C-grid discretization are frequently employed to simulate coastal ocean dynamics on unstructured meshes. It is shown that on time and space scales dominated by slow geostrophic dynamics, this discretization tends to exhibit checkerboard noise in the field of horizontal velocity divergence and vertical velocity, respectively. The noise is linked to the geometry of triangular C-grid and is amplified in regimes that are close to geostrophic balance through the particular structure of the Coriolis operator. It can be partly suppressed in some cases but remains a problem in a general case and makes the triangular C-grid a suboptimal choice for large-scale ocean modeling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Geostrophic turbulence is a key paradigm in the current understanding of the large-scale planetary circulations. It implies that a flow is turbulent, rotating, stably stratified, and in near-geostrophic balance. When a small-scale forcing is present, geostrophic turbulence features an inverse energy cascade. When the meridional variation of the Coriolis parameter (or a β-effect) is included, the horizontal flow symmetry breaks down giving rise to the emergence of jet flows. The presence of a large-scale drag ensures that the flow attains a steady state. Dependent on the governing parameters, four steady-state flow regimes are possible, two of which are considered in this study. In one of these regimes, a flow is dominated by the drag while in the other one, the recently discovered regime of zonostrophic turbulence, a flow becomes strongly anisotropic and features slowly evolving systems of alternating zonal jets. Zonostrophic turbulence is distinguished by anisotropic inverse energy cascade and emergence of a new class of nonlinear waves known as zonons. In addition, meridional scalar diffusion is strongly modified in this regime. This paper provides an overview of various regimes of turbulence with a β-effect, elaborates main characteristics of friction-dominated and zonostrophic turbulence, elucidates the physical nature of the zonons, discusses the meridional diffusion processes in different regimes, and relates these results to oceanic observations. A global 1/4° resolution product of surface currents has been developed by the Centre de Topographie des Océans et de l’Hydrosphère. The surface current is calculated from a combination of Ekman currents derived from wind estimates from QuikSCAT satellite, geostrophic current anomalies derived from altimetry, and a mean geostrophic current derived from climatology. In the equatorial band, the currents are adjusted following the methodology proposed by Lagerloef et al. (J Geophys Res, 104(C10):22313–22326, 1999). These satellite-derived currents have been compared to different types of in situ current observations. A global validation is performed using Lagrangian surface drifting buoys and acoustic Doppler current profiler current observations along ship tracks. The comparison shows a very good agreement in the subtropical and mid-latitude bands. The correlation between the satellite-derived currents and the drifter currents in zonal mean bands is around 0.7 for most of the world oceans, both for the zonal and the meridional components. This correlation rises up to 0.8 in the regions of strong boundary currents. In the equatorial band, the correlation with the surface drifting buoys is reduced. A direct comparison with the TOGA/TAO moored current meter data at the equator shows that the low frequency currents are captured by the satellite current product, but there is a substantial high-frequency signal (<20 days), which is not reproduced. This is especially the case for the meridional component and is mainly related to the tropical instability waves. We also show that using daily QuikSCAT wind forcing improves the satellite current product, particularly in the high-latitude westerly wind belt and in the tropical Indian Ocean. In spite of the fundamental role the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) plays for global climate stability, no direct current measurement of the Denmark Strait Overflow, which is the densest part of the AMOC, has been available until recently that resolve the cross-stream structure at the sill for long periods. Since 1999, an array of bottom-mounted acoustic instruments measuring current velocity and bottom-to-surface acoustic travel times was deployed at the sill. Here, the optimization of the array configuration based on a numerical overflow model is discussed. The simulation proves that more than 80% of the dense water transport variability is captured by two to three acoustic current profilers (ADCPs). The results are compared with time series from ADCPs and Inverted Echo Sounders deployed from 1999 to 2003, confirming that the dense overflow plume can be reliably measured by bottom-mounted instruments and that the overflow is largely geostrophically balanced at the sill.
