The article focuses on the effectiveness of a training programme for line managers at the Heart of England National Health Service (NHS) Foundation Trust in reducing the absence rates at the trust in June 2009. National health and work director Dame Carol Black cited the importance of training to the efficiency of line managers in handling absence. Ben Willmott, adviser of Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) asserts that the discussion of issues on the role of line managers in providing support to employee wellbeing is essential.
