There is growing evidence to suggest that men are at increased risk of premature death from a broad range of health conditions. With the government's mandate to reduce premature death, it is necessary to have an understanding of the health challenges faced by men. This article provides an overview of mortality data for men and women aged 15-64, with a focus on those aged 15-54, in England and Wales during 2011. Mortality data are viewed in relation to the main reasons for premature death in the male population. Initiatives aimed at addressing the health and social care needs of men are identified to raise awareness of the importance of targeting this population to reduce premature mortality.

Men are notorious for neglecting their health, so a health promotion team in Merseyside is taking the messages to them in the workplace.

Condoms are the only form of contraception that, when used correctly, can reduce the risk of pregnancy and transmission of sexually transmitted infections. This article outlines strategies for promoting correct male condom use. The availability, variety and history of condoms are explored. Possible reasons for people not wanting to use condoms are examined and advantages of condom use are provided. The author suggests ways in which healthcare workers can promote condom use and improve the experience and efficacy of this contraceptive device.

Aim: The aim of the pilot study was to explore lay and professional perceptions of men's sexual health behaviour and the factors affecting risk in relation to sexually transmitted infection (STI)., Method: The research was conducted in two cities in the UK and data were collected using a semi-structured questionnaire. A purposive sampling technique was used to ensure that a mixture of lay and professional responses was received., Results: The results indicate that lay and professional respondents perceive that STI risk is related to social inequality. Men from minority ethnic groups and lower social classes are believed to be at particular risk of contracting STIs but their needs are not being adequately addressed by sexual health services and information providers., Conclusion: Further research is needed to discover the ways in which sexual health and risk are affected by social inequality. Service providers and planners need to consider the possible consequences of developing sexual health services for the male population.

The vast majority of homeless people in the UK are male. In addition to becoming susceptible to many illnesses and to alcohol abuse, homeless men face a number of problems in accessing health care. A transformation of the health services is required to meet the needs of this vulnerable group.

In seeking to change health-related behaviour, such as smoking and poor diet, well mer clinics may be asking too much of their clients. This article explores the conflict between male socialisation and health education against a background of male mortality and morbidity. To achieve health gain for men, the author suggests a shift in emphasis is required from individual behavioural factors to wider socio-structural change.

This article looks at one attempt to allow a particularly vulnerable group of men, those in contact with mental health services, to explore men's health issues in a men-only group environment. Based on an examination of current literature on men's health issues and feedback from participants in the group sessions, the authors suggest that nursing should rethink its position on the issue of men's health.
