The hospitals are required to adopt various new measures and techniques to enhance and change one's everyday practices for improving and enhancing patient and employee satisfaction to provide a better community and healthcare to the patients. The analysis reveals that building a cultural environment around the staff, in addition to better communication and rewarding the successful are the few essential steps to be taken.

A community hospital's work site wellness program successfully worked with participating employees towards improving health, reducing sick leave use and demonstrating management's concern for employee health and well-being. The program offered ten indicators of wellness which included a reduction of cholesterol, seat belt use, exercise, and smoking cessation. The results of the program reflect the benefits of good health and a healthy work environment.

Hospitals consider a wide array of retention strategies in order to retain the retiring nurses, such as developing a succession plan, discussing retirement plans during annual evaluations, clarifying their retirement goals, and determining if they would like to continue in direct patient care. It is necessary to discuss ergonomic issues with the nurses, and develop positions that capitalize on nurse experience and expertise to keep them involved and satisfied.

Health care consultants continue to promote the notion that more and better patient care can be delivered with fewer nurses. Statistics and graphics notwithstanding, costs of care and health care stocks continue to rise, while access to care had fallen. While staffing has been reduced, patient satisfaction has fallen, errors are more common, and complications have risen. Cutting costs without reducing profits will not improve care.

A nursing staff management model which offers enhanced team building, better patient care, and cost reduction is presented. The model involves evaluating productivity standards for staff units and determining staffing needs by shift or department. Data from the model can be easily collected and used by personnel and management.

Celebration of National Nurses' Week was revitalized at a community hospital in southwestern Pennsylvania by a community service project. Nurses collected items needed by residents of a local women's shelter for domestic violence victims and participated in a Habitat for Humanity project. These activities were rated as the most satisfying part of Nurses' Week by 75% of the nurses. The appeal to nurses' altruism and involvement of staff early in the project contributed to the project's success.
