As human beings age, they become weak, fragile, and feeble. It is a slowly progressing yet complex syndrome in which old age or some disabilities are not prerequisites; neither does loss of human parts lead to frailty among the physically fit older persons. This paper aims to describe the influences of transhumanist perspectives on human‐technology enhancements and replacements in the transcendence of human frailties, including those of older persons, in which technology is projected to deliver solutions toward transcending these frailties. Through technologies including genetic screening and other technological manipulations, intelligent machines and augmented humans improve, maintain, and remedy human‐linked susceptibilities. Furthermore, other technologies replace parts fabricated through inorganic‐mechanical processes such as 3D‐printing. Advancing technologies are reaching the summit of technological sophistication contributing to the transhumanist views of being human in a technological world. In New Zealand in 2006, a professional photographer undertook a photo essay of residents and staff in an aged care residential setting. The photographer captured the 'lifeworld' of the institution through photographing the images of daily life. The resulting photo essay, which included some photographs of older people naked and in semi-dress, was published in New Zealand's principal nursing journal in May 2006. There ensued an unprecedented reaction that divided New Zealand's nursing world. In this paper, I explore possible meanings of the 'photo furore', through discourse analysis of the numerous letters to the nursing journal editors. These letters reveal reactions and opinions from both 'sides'- rejection and disapproval, acceptance and approval - as the situation developed into dichotomy. In this paper, the further aim is to address the issue of attitudes and reactions of the exposed ageing body from theoretical perspectives. Results reveal conflicting discourses and attitudes within nursing towards photographs of the ageing body and underlying this, how nurses believe older people should be thought about and cared for. These attitudes are wide-ranging and, on the one hand, include ageism and a desire to protect and supervise older people versus a greater tolerance and acceptance of older people as competent, autonomous beings. This paper foregrounds some of the central themes that a group of older women in writing workshops identified as integral to their health and overall quality of life. In particular it looks at how these women felt about their relationship to professional health care providers, and the role that both play in the maintenance of the women’s health and well-being. The research that it is based on comes from narratives and autobiographical stories written by these women, which aimed both to identify the issues and concerns that affect them as older women, and to position them centrally as agents and collaborators in intellectual work. Their challenging words disrupted conventional story lines about the experiences of growing older, and confronted the narrow range of negative images of ageing and the accompanying stereotypes that currently pervade our culture. The Smart Home designed to extend older adults independence is emerging as a clinical solution to the growing ageing population. Nurses will and should play a key role in the development and application of Smart Home technology. Accordingly, conceptual frameworks are needed for nurse scientists who are collaborating with multidisciplinary research teams in developing an intelligent Smart Home that assists with managing older adults' health. We present a conceptual framework that is grounded in critical realism and pragmatism, informing a unique mixed methodological approach to generating, analyzing, and contextualizing sensor data for clinician‐based machine learning. This framework can guide nurse scientists in knowledge construction as they participate in multidisciplinary health‐assistive Smart Home and artificial intelligence research. In this paper, we review philosophical underpinnings and explicate how this framework can guide nurse scientists collaborating with engineers to develop intelligent health‐assistive Smart Homes. It is critical that clinical nursing knowledge is integrated into Smart Home and artificial intelligence features. Self‐management programmes provide strategies to optimise health while educating and providing resources for living with enduring illnesses. The current paper describes the development of a community‐based programme that combines a transdiagnostic approach to self‐management with mindfulness to enhance psychological coping for older people with long‐term multimorbidity. The six steps of intervention mapping (IM) were used to develop the programme. From a needs assessment, the objectives of the programme were formulated; the theoretical underpinnings then aligned to the objectives, which informed programme design, decisions on implementation, programme adoption and evaluation steps. Bandura's social cognitive theory informed the methods and practical strategies of delivery. Among the features addressed with participants are transdiagnostic dimensions such as fatigue, pain, breathlessness, sleep disturbances. The programme utilises mindfulness to aid coping and ameliorate the psychological distresses associated with chronicity. Findings from an initial feasibility study and subsequent pilot assisted in conceptualising our programme. In conclusion, applying IM gave the planners confidence the programme is robust and evidence‐based with clearly articulated links between the behavioural goals and design elements to obtain the desired outcomes. This review critically examines the current state of the science on the concept of family caregiver-care receiver mutuality, summarizes accomplishments and gaps and identifies directions for future theory development and research. Mutuality between family caregivers and care receivers is of increasing interest to researchers. However, no analysis of the current state of the science of this important concept has been published. Our literature search revealed 34 research articles that met inclusion criteria. The studies were assessed in terms of conceptualization of mutuality, instrument development, populations studied, research designs and methods and findings. Significant scientific progress during the past 30 years includes the development of clear definitions and new instruments, expansion of research beyond the clinical populations in which mutuality was first studied, the use of a variety of research designs, and increasingly sophisticated methods of data analysis. Growing evidence suggests that mutuality is associated with caregiver emotional health outcomes and may decrease over time in the context of chronic illness. Directions for future research include development of new theoretical frameworks grounded in relational theory, development of theory on the dynamics of mutuality over time, exploration of mutuality in diverse cultures and populations, and intervention studies aimed at enhancing mutuality. The aim of the study was to illuminate very old persons' experiences of feeling old in order to get a nuanced understanding of the ageing process in later life. Fifteen persons 85-96 years of age, living in their own homes, were interviewed in-depth. Data were analysed utilising a phenomenological-hermeneutic approach. Eight persons reported that they felt old. The experience of feeling old entailed four characteristics: being able to date the beginning of feeling old, fear of helplessness and of being unable to manage one's life situation, not recognising one's former self, and feeling different from others. These characteristics corresponded to the main properties of a transition process. The comprehensive understanding was that the very old persons who also felt old were in a phase of transition. The distinguishing qualities of those that felt old were also found to be in line with the dystonic dominance in the ninth stage designated by Joan Erikson of the previously described life cycle. Knowledge about transition processes and sensitivity to very old people's experiences of feeling old are of great importance to nursing in order to provide adequate health care services and prevent unhealthy transitions.
