Black hole complementarity was a consensus among string theorists for the interpretation of the information loss problem. However, recently some authors find inconsistency of black hole complementarity: large N rescaling and AMPS argument. According to AMPS, the horizon should be a firewall so that one cannot penetrate there for consistency. There are some controversial discussions on the firewall. Apart from these papers, the authors suggest an assertion using a semi-regular black hole model and we conclude that the firewall, if it exists, should affect to asymptotic observer. The final status of the single module configuration for CUORE experiment will be illustrated. CUORE is a tightly packed array of 988 TeO2 bolometers and represents one of the best approaches to search for neutrinoless double beta decay (ββ0ν). TeO2 crystals production is now well established and specific attention was dedicated to test the complete infrastructures. During the last months, dedicated measurements, referred as CCVR (Chinese Crystal Validation Run), were done at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS). Results obtained in CCVR runs will be presented considering the detector performances achieved and the characteristics that can be attributed to all the final detectors parts. © 2011 Elsevier B.V.

This is a status report of the evaluation of the three-loop corrections to the static QCD potential of a heavy quark and an antiquark. The families of Feynman integrals that appear in the evaluation are described. To reduce any integral of the families to master integrals we solve integration-by-parts relations by the algorithm called FIRE. To evaluate the corresponding master integrals we apply the Mellin-Barnes technique. First results are presented: the coefficients of n_l^3 and n_l^2, where n_l is the number of light quarks.

The NA48/2 experiment at CERN performed a high precision study of direct CP-violation in charged kaon decays into three pions, using an upgraded NA48 setup and a novel design for simultaneous unseparated K ± beams. The asymmetry in the Dalitz plot linear slopes A g = ( g + − g − ) / ( g + + g − ) is measured to be A g c = ( − 1.3 ± 2.3 ) ⋅ 10 −4 by studying 3.1 ⋅ 10 9 K ± → π + π − π ± decays and A g n = ( 2.1 ± 1.9 ) ⋅ 10 −4 by studying 91 ⋅ 10 6 K ± → π ° π ° π ± decays. The unique K ± simultaneuos beam system, the design of the detectors and the method of analysis provide good control of the instrumental charge asymmetries and allow to keep the precision of the result limited by statistics, reaching accuracy one order of magnitude better than in previous experiments. The large amount of charged kaon decays collected allow also precision measurements of several rare decay processes.

The Spallation Neutron Source is now under construction in Oak Ridge, TN, USA. Commissioning of the accelerator complex began in 2002 and is scheduled to be complete in April 2006. In this paper we will briefly discuss the status of each major accelerator system and give some examples of some recent commissioning results.

Many key questions in particle physics and cosmology are unanswered today. Accelerator experiments together with astro(particle)physics observations can shed light on these questions. Together with the LHC the ILC will play a crucial role. This contribution deals with the ILC project comprising physics case, detector studies and accelerator development.

Geant 4 is an object-oriented toolkit for simulating the passage of particles through matter. At the very heart of Geant 4 there is a wide set of complementary, and sometimes alternative, physics models which describe the basic interaction of particles with matter. After a review of the main characteristics of the toolkit and a status report of the current activities, the results of a series of detailed tests for the quantitative validation of the electromagnetic models of Geant 4 are presented. Such precision tests demonstrate the reliability of the physics models provided in Geant 4 and are hence particularly relevant for critical applications of simulation models.

EUSO is 2.5 m diameter telescope to be installed on the International Space Station (ISS) to observe from above (∼400 km altitude), very high energy (10 19-21 eV) cosmic rays by detecting the UV light generated by the billions of electrons in the shower ionizing the atmosphere nitrogen. The European and Japanese parts of the collaboration depend on ESA for the mission and the results of phase A should be examined in November 2003.The US part of the collaboration has already been approved for phase B by NASA, to the condition of an OK by ESA. The status of the Monte Carlo programs for the simulation of the tau-lepton production and decay in high energy accelerator experiments is reviewed. A status report is given of the QCDOC project, a massively parallel computer optimized for lattice QCD using system-on-a-chip technology. We describe several of the hardware and software features unique to the QCDOC architecture and present performance figures obtained from simulating the current VHDL design of the QCDOC chip with single-cycle accuracy., Lattice2001(algorithms), 7 pages, 4 figures

We present a short status report of the NESTOR deep sea high energy muon and neutrino telescope now under construction in Pylos, Greece.

We give a status report on the present neutrino experiments at accelerators (NOMAD, CHORUS, NuTeV, LSND, KARMEN) and at reactors (CHOOZ, Palo Verde, MUNU). The emphasis is put on oscillation searches, but other physics topics are also briefly reviewed.

The latest evolutions of the ICARUS project are reviewed. During the present year the collaboration has been heavily involved into the construction of the first full scale prototypes of the 600 ton ICARUS detector. Cryogenic and purification tests as well as mechanical tests on a wires chamber module, are presently under completion. No major problems were found and we foresee to be ready for the commissioning of the major detector components by the end of the present year. Also, the Long Baseline Neutrino Oscillation program has been subject to a rapid acceleration. Following our formal proposal, submitted and approved at the beginning of this year by the CERN SPSLC, a working group has been formed to study the details of the beam and a sensitive program has been formulated by which first neutrinos can be sent to the Gran Sasso at the end of year 2001.

The goals of the collaboration are detailed together with a status report of the achievements and the work still to be done to make a km3 under-sea detector happen.

The ICARUS detector is the outcome of a graded, careful strategy of R&D to develop a new experimental technique which offers a “bubble chamber like” quality of events for non-accelerator experiments and neutrino physics. We describe the status of the project and discuss recent developments.

A status report is given on the achievements of the Baikal and AMANDA collaborations in their efforts to detectect High Energy Cosmic Neutrinos.

The ANTARES collaboration is building a large neutrino telescope at a depth of 2500 m in the Mediterranean Sea. This detector will allow the search for high energy cosmic neutrinos from (extra-)galactic sources, for dark matter signatures like neutralinos captured in the Earth or the Sun, and the study of atmospheric neutrinos. The results of a new generation string sector, a junction box and a deep-sea cable deployed in the sea are reviewed. The strings to be deployed in 2005-2007 are under construction.

NOMAD is an experiment searching for ν μ(e) → ν τ oscillations at the CERN SPS Wide-Band neutrino Beam. This search is performed via the appearance of ν τ in a predominantly ν μ beam of 24 GeV average energy. The experiment has been designed to allow a kinematical selection of ν τ charged current interactions from the background of ν μ and ν e charged and neutral current interactions and has maximum sensitivity in sin 2 2 θ for Δm 2 greater than 40 eV 2 , and some sensitivity remains for Δm 2 down to 1 eV 2 in the case of full mixing. NOMAD has taken data with the full detector since August 1995, and will pursue the oscillations search until the end of 1997. Charged and neutral current interactions of ν μ , ν¯ μ , ν e and V¯ e have been identified and comparisons between data and Monte-Carlo are presented. The status of the ν μ → ν τ oscillation search using various tau decay channels ( τ → μ , τ → e, τ → hadrons) is also reported.

A status report on the construction of the drift chamber for the KLOE experiment at the LNF DAΦNE Φ-factory is given. Physics requirements, detector design performance and its key mechanical features and components are briefly reviewed. The program currently consists of (i) the preparation of final detector components, complemented by (ii) extensive tests of prototypes of critical mechanical parts (like the end plates) and the “test construction” of a 1:1 chamber prototype. These two sub-programs are pursued in parallel. Single-component prototype checks include surveys of their shape and size, of accuracy of wire-hole drilling, measurements of their displacement or buckling under nominal load. The “test construction” is the debugging of mechanical assembly, survey and alignment of mechanics and of wire-stringing robotics, the actual stringing of a sample 2000 holes drilled on the prototype end plates, the measurement of electrical properties of strung wires, as well as of their mechanical tension. These extensive tests have been successfully completed; they represent an effective hands-on training of the construction group, and will allow a prompt and steady start of the drift chamber wire stringing as all necessary components became available at LNF.

A current status of the CERN CHORUS experiment is reported in this article. A beam exposure has been done in 1994 and 1995. 500K neutrino interactions have been accumulated in the emulsion target and a development of the target has been finished recently. A pilot analysis of 1/4 of the target extracted in advance is going on and a preliminary result using about 300 μ − events —a sub sample of located events so far — is presented.

This talk presents results of weak matrix elements calculated from simulations done on 170 $32^3 \times 64$ lattices at $\beta = 6.0$ using quenched Wilson fermions. We discuss the extraction of pseudoscalar decay constants $f_\pi$, $f_K$, $f_D$, and $f_{D_s}$, the form-factors for the rare decay $B \to K^* \gamma$, and the matrix elements of the 4-fermion operators relevant to $B_K$, $B_7$, $B_8$. We present an analysis of the various sources of systematic errors, and show that these are now much larger than the statistical errors for each of these observables. Our main results are $f_D=186(29) \MeV$, $f_{D_s}=224(16) MeV$, $T_1=T_2=0.24(1)$, $B_K(NDR, 2\GeV)=0.67(9)$, and $B_8(NDR, 2\GeV)=0.81(1)$., Comment: 8 pages. Talks presented at Lattice 95. Latex. After the completion of the first period of data taking in 1994, the status of the CHORUS experiment, aiming to detect νμ — ντ oscillations, and its perspectives are examined.

The aim of the NEMO collaboration is to search for neutrinoless double beta decay and thus to investigate physics beyond the Standard Model. The expected sensitivity for the effective neutrino mass is on the order of 0.1 eV. The NEMO3 detector will be completed and ready to start measurements by the end of the year 2001. Since June 2000, three contiguous sectors have been operating in the Frejus Underground Laboratory (France). This trial run has provided a check on the functionality of the counters and the tracking device.

The ANTARES project aims at the construction of an underwater neutrino telescope at the scale of 0.1 km^2 2400 m deep in the Mediterranean Sea. After a 4-year R&D program, the ANTARES project has entered the construction phase which will be concluded by the end of 2004. We report on the status of the Monte Carlo event generator KRONOS for deep inelastic lepton hadron scattering at HERA. kronos focusses on the description of electronmagnetic corrections beyond the existing fixed order calculations.

A status report of the French project to search for dark objects in the Galactic Halo via gravitational micro-lensing of stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud is presented. The search uses a combination of Schmidt photographic plates and CCD images and is sensitive to lensing by objects in the range 10−7 Me to 10−1 Me.

MINOS is a long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment designed to study the region in parameter space suggested by recent results on atmospheric neutrinos from Superkamiokande, Soudan 2, and MACRO. The detector, located at the Soudan mine in northern Minnesota, will be illuminated by a neutrino beam produced by the Fermilab Main Injector, 732 km distant. Data taking is expected to begin in 2003. We report here on the present status and future plans for MINOS R&D, construction and running.

The goal of the Borexino experiment is to measure the mono-energetic 0.86 MeV 7 Be solar neutrinos, a central feature in the on-going story of missing solar neutrinos. Borexino will accomplish this by detecting neutrino-electron scattering events in a low background liquid scintillator, well shielded from external radiation in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory.

We present a status report on the construction of the classical perfect action using the b = √3 renormalization group transformation (RGT) [1]. We investigate finite volume corrections and map the locality of the fixed-point action by tuning the RGT parameter, κ. We compare results with the previous calculation for b = 2 RGT [2].

The present situation concerning the observations of SN 1987A as well as their theoretical interpretation are reviewed. In particular, questions related to the unexpected blue appearance of the progenitor star, its presupernova evolution, the explosion mechanism, and apparant deviations from spherical symmetry and their origin will be addressed.

We give a brief status report on our on-going investigation of the prospects to discover QCD instantons in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) at HERA. A recent high-quality lattice study of the topological structure of the QCD vacuum is exploited to provide crucial support of our predictions for DIS, based on instanton perturbation theory., 6 pages, 5 figures, talk presented at the 7th International Workshop on Deep Inelastic Scattering and QCD (DIS 99), Zeuthen/Germany, April 19-23, 1999; to be published in the Proceedings (Nuclear Physics B (Proc. The Fermilab/Soudan Mine long baseline neutrino experiment design status is discussed, as well as the expected physics capabilities.

The status of the search for K + → π + ν ν and future prospects for the search for K L → π 0 ν ν are outlined in this report. AGS experiment 787, currently searching for the charged decay mode, has reached a single event sensitivity of 4.2 × 10 −10 with total background ∼ 3 × 10 −11 . Proposed AGS experiment 926 will search for the neutral version of this decay. Initial studies indicate that at the current Standard Model predicted rate for this decay, and 80 weeks of AGS 2000 running time [1], on the order of 70 K L → π 0 ν ν should be recorded with a background level of less than 10 events.

We present intermediate results on our ongoing investigation concerning semileptonic decays of heavy pseudoscalar mesons into pseudoscalar and vector mesons. The corresponding formfactors are evaluated at several momenta and appropriate combinations of four light and four heavy quarks, which are chosen to allow for an extrapolation into the B Meson region. In order to obtain clear groundstate signals we apply gauge invariant ``Wuppertal'' smearing to the quarks. The analysis is based on 32 quenched gauge configurations of size $24^3 \times 64$ at $\beta=6.3$, with Wilson fermions., Comment: 3 pages, uuencoded, contribution to Lat 94

The BPRS experiment is dedicated to particle Dark Matter search with low activity scintillators. Preliminary results on Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) have been already obtained with NaI(Tl) and CaF 2 (Eu) target-detectors. New detector developments are in progress. A new search for Strongly Interacting Massive Particles (SIMPs) with NaI(Tl) scintillators have been also performed.

This report summarizes the state of advancement of the LEP (Large Electron-Position) Project at CERN, as reached in May 1987. This collider will provide center-of-mass energies in the range 40 to 190 GeV; four experiments are actively under construction. Work on the LEP site started in autumn 1983, and machine tests are expected in late spring 1989

This is a status report on a research project aimed to study dynamically triangulated random surfaces embedded in a Euclidean “space-time”.

I present a status report about numerical computations of the hadronic mass spectrum and the heavy quark potential in quenched and full Quantum Chromo Dynamics. I stress the new methods that have been recently developed, the global scenario we have reconstructed up to now and the problems we are encountering.
