Abstract

Excited states of the neutron deficient Ag-101 nucleus have been investigated via the Cr-50(Ni-58, 3rho1alpha) heavy-ion induced reaction at 261 meV by use of in-beam spectroscopic methods. On the basis of the measured gammagamma-cincidence relations and angular distribution ratios high-spin bands have been extended up to I-pi = 35/2(+), 45/2((-)) and (49/2(-)). The negative parity states at the highest energy have been interpreted as terminating non-collective oblate states in the framework of the Nilsson-Strutinsky cranking formalism.

Abstract

High-spin states of the neutron deficient (100)pd nucleus have been investigated via the Cr-50(Ni-58, 4p alpha) and Zn-70(S-36,6n) heavy-ion induced reactions. For the detection of evaporated particles and gamma rays the NORDBALL array equipped with ancillary detectors and the EUROGAM II detector system were utilized. By the use of in-beam spectroscopic methods 89 transitions belonging to (100)pd have been observed, 49 of which were identified for the first time. The level scheme has been extended up to E-X approximate to 16 MeV excitation energy and I approximate to 25h. The experimental results were compared with the predictions of cranked shell model calculations. Maximal spin alignments were found in the (pig(9/2))(12+)(-4) (vd(5/2),g(7/2)(3)h(11/2))(13-) and (pig(9/2)(-3)p(1/2))(11-)(vd(5/2)g(7/2)(3)h(11/2))(13-) configurations. Possible existence of octupole correlations is discussed on the basis of 6 (E 1)lB(E2) values deduced for the decays of high-spin levels in the yrast negative-parity band. Abstract

Excited states of As-68 nucleus were populated through the C-12(Ni-58,pn) reaction and investigated by in-beam gamma-spectroscopic methods. The NORDBALL detector array equipped with charged particle and neutron detectors was used to detect the evaporated particles and gamma-rays. The level scheme of As-68 was constructed on the basis of gamma gamma-coincidence relations up to 6 MeV excitation energy and J(pi) = (15(+)). The structure of the nucleus is discussed in the framework of the interacting boson-fermion-fermion model. The states below 2.3 MeV are described as members of proton-neutron-phonon multiplets. Abstract

Neutron deficient nuclei close to 100Sn have been studied using the NORDBALL Ge-detector array together with ancillary particle detectors. Evaporation residues from the compound nucleus 108Te were identified with charged particle and neutron detectors. In this paper a considerable extension of the level scheme of the nucleus 102Cd is presented. The strongest cascade of the new level scheme reveals an irregular sequence of dipole transitions above Iπ = 10+ extending up to spin 17. A strongly populated rather regular side band consisting of four quadrupole transitions ranging from spin 9 to spin 17 was also discovered. This band was tentatively assigned negative parity. Shell model calculations were performed and a very good agreement with the experimental results was found. The excited states could successfully be interpreted as neutron particle and proton hole excitations with respect to the doubly closed core 50100Sn50.

Abstract

High-spin states of the isotopes In-103,In-105,In-107,In-109 have been investigated using in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopic methods. Results from three different experiments are presented. Targets of Fe-54, Cr-50, and Mo-92 were bombarded by a 270 and 261 MeV Ni-58 beam and by a 95 MeV F-19 beam, respectively. Reaction channel separation was achieved with a charged-particle detector array and in the first two experiments also with a 1 pi neutron detector system. As a result of these experiments the level schemes of In-103,In-105,In-107,In-109 were significantly extended. Excited states of these odd-A indium isotopes are discussed within the framework of the nuclear shell model and the hole-core coupling scheme. The systematics of excited states of light odd-A indium isotopes is also discussed. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract

Excited states of Cd-103 were studied in the reaction Ni-58(Cr-50,4pn)Cd-103. The NORDBALL array with neutron and charged particle detectors was employed for the detection of gamma rays and light evaporated particles. The level scheme of Cd-103 was significantly extended. A strong cascade of E2 transitions connecting negative parity states was found, Shell model calculations were performed and positive parity excited states were interpreted in terms of neutron-particle and proton-hole excitations with respect to the doubly magic N = Z = 50 core. Abstract

High spin states in 105Cd have been studied using reactions 106Cd(p, pn), 106Cd(3He, 2p2n), 92Zr(16O, 3n) and 76Ge(34S, 5n). The excited levels are dominated by a negative parity band structure up to spin 47 2 − and a positive parity structure up to spin 27 2 + . The negative parity structure is based on ν h 11 2 excitations and undergoes a band crossing at h ω ≈ 0.44 MeV . This band crossing is interpreted as an alignment of a g 7 2 neutron pair. The positive parity excitations are understood as due to ν g 7 2 and ν d 5 2 configurations. The results are discussed in terms of spin diabatic surface calculations.

Abstract

Experimental studies at the OSIRIS fission-product mass separator have yielded a wealth of new results on the doubly-magic region near 132 Sn. In the following we focus on two aspects of the new results: on the evidence for octupole collectivity of the 3 1 − state in 132 Sn and on the similarity of the 208 Pb and 132 Sn regions as evidenced from the modelling of the low excitations in 132 Sb. The Stage-I of the PIAFE facility recently proposed at Grenoble will offer exciting possibilities for even more detailed studies of the doubly magic regions near 132 Sn and 78 Ni (the latter for the first time).

Abstract

A spectroscopic study of Sb-108 has been carried out as a part of a larger experiment where in total twenty-nine different residual nuclei were identified. This study gives the first information on excited levels in this nucleus. A low-lying two-quasi-particle multiplet together with some of the higher lying levels are discussed within the framework of the nuclear shell model. A rotational, strongly coupled, band is identified as, most likely, being built on the deformed pig9/2(-1) nuh11/2 configuration in accordance with total routhian surface calculations. Tentative spins and parities are presented as well as B(M1)/B(E2) ratios for some of the transitions in the strongly coupled band.

Abstract

Bose-Einstein (BE) correlations between like-sign charged pions were studied in pp annihilations at rest into four-prong events, using data taken with the CPLEAR detector at LEAR (CERN). A strong enhancement was found in the production of pairs of like-sign pions of similar momenta, with respect to the pairs of unlike-sign pions. The observed BE- enhancement was used to extract the values for the strength λ of the effect and the radius r of the pion emitting source. The extracted value of λ >l is of relevant importance and clearly does not depend on the assumed parametrization of the correlation function. The influence of the normalization and fitting procedure, the detector resolution, the resonances production and decay and the neutral-pion multiplicity cuts, on the size of the pion source and the strength of the effect was investigated.

Abstract

Excited states of 14460Nd84 have been studied using the 142 Ce (α,2 n γ) 144 Nd reaction. Singles γ-ray, γ-γ coincidence spectra, angular and time distributions of γ-rays with respect to the beam bursts have been measured. Excited states up to 4.986 MeV with spin values up to 13 were populated. The majority of the observed states with spin values up to 12 can be interpreted as two-quasiparticle states. Several of the highest-spin levels can also be explained quantitatively as four-quasiparticle states. No isomeric states with a half-life longer than 1 ns have been found.

38. High-spin states and evidence for particle-core coupling in the N = 83 isotones: 143Nd, 145Sm and 147Gd

Abstract

The level structure of the 143Nd, 145Sm and 147Gd nuclei has been studied using the 142 Ce (α, 3 n γ) 143 Nd , 144 Nd (α, 3 n γ) 145 Sm and 144Sm(α, nγ)147Gd reactions. Singles γ-ray, γ-γ coincidence spectra, angular and time distributions with respect to the beam bursts have been measured at various bombarding energies. Gamma transitions between excited states with spin values up to 25 2 + have been observed in all the nuclei investigated. The lifetime and angular distribution measurements performed confirm the recently proposed reassignment of some low-lying high-spin states in the N = 83 isotones considered as 13 2 + excitations. The observed level structure in these N = 83 nuclei can be explained if the extra neutron outside the N = 82 closed shell is coupled to doubly even core excitations. The coupling of the neutron single particle excitations (mainly in the 2f 7 2 , 1h 9 2 and li 13 2 orbitals) to the lowest 2+ and 3− vibrations of the core is calculated within the framework of an intermediate coupling model. The results obtained in these calculations are in good agreement with the experimental data. The energies of the three-particle states, being the results of the coupling of the 2f 7 2 or the 1i 13 2 extra neutron to two-proton excitations in the core, are nicely reproduced in the calculations, when empirical values of the two-body interaction matrix elements are used.

Abstract

The structure of excited states in 132Sn, fed in the β-decay of 132In, has been investigated. Absolute intensities were deduced from γ-singles measurements. From multi-spectrum analysis of γ-lines the half-life of 132In was determined to be 186 ± 22 ms. A level scheme based on γγ and βγ coincidences is presented. The conversion electron spectrum has been studied and internal conversion coefficients deduced for two low-energy transitions. The total decay energy of 132In was determined, from γ-gated β-spectra, to be Qβ = 13.6 ± 0.4 MeV. A lower limit of 6.968 MeV for the neutron separation energy in 132Sn was deduced from the β-delayed neutron spectrum. The experimental results on the level structure of the doubly closed shell nucleus 132Sn show that the shell model is applicable even far from the valley of stability.

Abstract

The γ-rays following reactions induced by bombarding targets of 114, 116, 118, 120, 122 Sn with 118 MeV 12 C ions were investigated using six NaI(Tl) detectors in a two-dimensional coincidence arrangement. Experimental energy-correlation spectra were extracted from the original coincidence matrices. The energy-correlation spectra exhibit the features expected for rotational nuclei and were used to deduce information on the moment of inertia I (2) = ΔI/Δω . The gross properties of the behaviour of I (2) in the Ba-Xe region are discussed together with their interpretation within the cranked shell model (CSM).

Abstract

Excited states in 130Xe were populated in the reaction 130 Te (α, 4 n ) , and the subsequent de-excitation was studied using in-beam γ-ray spectroscopic methods. High-spin states were observed to a possible spin of 19 kh at an excitation energy of 7 MeV. Band-crossings due to h 11 2 neutrons and protons were observed. The triaxial cranked shell model was applied in order to study the quasiparticle content of different bands. Excitation energies of two-quasiparticle states were calculated in the framework of the semiempirical shell model.

Abstract

Using the OSIRIS on-line isotope separator facility, the decays of 130Sn and 130, 132Sb have been studied. On the basis of singles γ and γ-γ coincidence Ge(Li) spectra and conversion electron Si(Li) measurements, level schemes for 130Sb, 130Te and 132Te have been constructed. The corresponding half-lives have been measured using multiscaling technique. The 3.8 min ground state of 130Sn populates only positive parity states in the πν−3 nucleus 130Sb: the energetically lowest 5+ state with the (π1 g 7 2 , ν2 d 3 2 ) configuration assignment; the T 1 2 = 3.6 ± 0.3 ns 4 + state at 70.0 keV; the 2+ state at 262.5 keV; the (0, 1)+ state at 697.2 keV; the 3+ state at 813.1 keV and the 1+ state at 1042.3 keV excitation energy. A 1.7 min isomeric state in 130Sn, with the tentative spin assignment (7−), populates several odd parity levels in 130Sb. These arise from the (π1 g 7 2 , ν1 h 11 2 -1 ) and/or (π2 d 5 2 , ν1 h 11 2 -1 ) configurations and are located 84.7 keV (6−), 144.9 keV (7−), 688.5 keV and 1044.0 keV above the 40 min 8− β- decaying state. No transitions between odd and even parity states have been observed. The most important excited states in 130Te found in the β− decay of the 6.6 min 130Sb 5+ state are: 839.4 keV, 2+; 1632.8 keV, 4+; 1815.1 keV, 6+; 2100.8 keV, 5−. Levels in the π2ν−2 nucleus 132Te were observed in the β− decays of the 2.8 min 132Sb (4+) and the 4.2 min 132Sb (8−) states. Unique spin and parity assignments have been given to the following states: 973.9 keV, 2+; 1670.7 keV, 4+; 1774.1 keV, 6+; 1924.7 keV, 7−; 2053.0 keV, 5−.

Abstract

High-spin properties of even 118–122Xe isotopes have been studied in experiments when a 118 MeV 12C beam impinged on 114Cd and 116Cd targets. The γ-rays emitted following the reactions were detected by six NaI(Tl) counters. The coincidence events from the counters were sorted into a two-dimensional matrices, from which the energy-correlation spectra were extracted. From the energy correlation spectra the quantities of the collective moment of inertia I (2) are deduced and compared with data obtained for the same nuclei in previous experiments, as well as with results from theoretical studies.

Abstract

Levels of 132Xe and 131Xe have been studied in 130Te(α, 2nγ) and 130Te(α, 3nγ) reactions. In 132Xe the (h112, s12)5−, (h112, d32)7− and (h2112)10+ two-quasiparticle states have been investigated. The half-life of the 7− level was found to be 90 ± 10 ns. The three-quasiparticle states observed in 131Xe arise from the coupling of a h112 neutron-hole to the levels of 132Xe. The level having the highest-spin value 232+ (2194.7) keV has been interpreted as a member of the (h2112, d32) configuration. It decays to the levels (h2112, s12)192+, (h3112)192−(h3112)152− and (h112)112− by a straight cascade. The 192+ level in the cascade was observed to be an isomeric state with T12 = 14 ± 3 ns.

Abstract

Levels of even Te isotopes ( A = 122–126) have been studied in Sn(α, 2n) reactions. From intensity, angular distributions and excitation function measurements, members of the evenparity band up to 10 + are assigned. The negative-parity states 5 − and 7 − interpreted to have configurations ( h 11 2 , s 1 2 ) and ( h 11 2 , d 3 2 ) are also observed. The assignments in 124 Te are supported by γ-γ coincidence measurement. The level structure of high-spin states in doubly even Te ( A = 114–134) are discussed.

Abstract

Levels in 132Te were populated in the 2.8 and 4.2 min β-decays of 132Sb produced using the OSIRIS on-line isotope separator. The half-lives of the 1774 keV 6+ and 1925 keV 7− states in 132e were studied using the delayed coincidence method. Conversion coefficients were measured for the 151 keV 7− → 6+ E1 and the 103 keV 6+ → 4+ E2 transitions. The T 1 2 for the 6+ state was deduced to be 145 ± 8 ns, which implies that B(E2; 6+ → 4+) = 132 ± 8 e2 · fm4. The T 1 2 for the 7−3 state was determined to be 9 ± 2 μs, giving a hindrance factor of 1.2 × 108 compared to the Weisskopf estimate. The result is interpreted in terms of two-particle configurations: v( h 11 2 −1 , d 3 2 −1 ) 7− and π( g 7 2 2 6 + . The systematics of E even tellurium isotopes are discussed and comparison is made with available microscopic and macroscopic theories.

Abstract

The high-spin states of 125 Te have been investigated using the 124 Sn (α, 3nγ) reaction and the in-beam technique. Besides low-spin levels observed in the radioactive decay, the high-spin positive- and negative-parity bands have been established. As a possible explanation of the nature of the excited states in 125 Te the idea of the odd-neutron(hole)-core coupling is discussed.

49. Properties of 13052Te78 as observed in the 40 min β-decay of 130Sb

Abstract

Gamma-ray and conversion electron spectra associated with the decay of 40 min 130Sb have been measured with Ge(Li) and Si(Li) detectors. The antimony samples were produced using the on-line isotope separator OSIRIS to isolate the fission products from 235U. On the basis of the measured singles and γ-γ coincidence spectra, a new level scheme has been constructed. The most important states observed are: 839.4 keV, 2+; 1632.8 keV, 4+; 1815.1 keV, 6+; 2100.8 keV, 5−; and 2146.0 keV, 7−. Using delayed coincidence techniques a half-life of 9.8±0.5 ns was deduced for the 6+ state. This implies that the 182.3 keV transition connecting the 6+ and 4+ states has B(E2)exp = 240±12 e2 · fm4. This value is 2.8 times greater than that theoretically predicted if both states are assumed to be pure (g 7 2 )2 two-proton configurations. The T 1 2 . for the 7− state was determined to be 115±8 ns giving a hindrance factor of 1.8 × 107 with respect to the Weisskopf estimate for the 330.9 keV 7− → 6+ El transition. The origins of the 5− and 7− states are ascribed mainly to the ( 1 h 11 2 ), 3 s 1 2 ) and ( 1 h 11 2 , 2 d 3 2 ) two-neutron configurations, respectively.

By studying high-energy β − particles the 0.53±0.05 sec decay of 130 49 In 81 and excited states in the two-neutron-hole nucleus 130 50 Sn 80 have been observed. These states have been given the tentative assignments 2 + (1217 keV), 4 + (1992 keV) and 5 − (2119 keV).
