The STAR Time Projection Chamber was successfully operated during the first RHIC run in 2000. Most of the STAR contributions reported in these proceedings are based on the analysis of data from the TPC. In this article, we show that the performance achieved by the TPC, in terms of track reconstruction, position resolution, and particle identification are well suited for measuring precise and reliable physics observables.

We present some of the latest results from the E895 experiment conducted at the BNL AGS accelerator. Au+Au collisions were recorded by the EOS Time Projection Chamber (TPC) at beam energies of 2, 4, 6, and 8 A GeV. The TPC detector permitted the reconstruction of individual collision events with almost 4π acceptance and good particle identification. This capability allowed E895 to study global observables and two particle correlations with respect to symmetries of the event. Flow excitation functions are examined and discussed in the context of the Nuclear Equation of State.

The analysing power and differential cross sections of the elastic scattering of 3 He by 89 Y, 90,91 Zr, 207,208 pb and 209 Bi have been measured at E He = 33.3 MeV using a polarized 3 He beam. The elastic scattering has been successfully described by phenomenological and “folding” optical-model potentials based on the 3MY nucleon-nucleon interaction. The mass dependence of the spin-orbit part of the optical potential is discussed.

Product of charged kaons in central S + S and O + Au collisions at 200 GeV/nucleon has been studied in the NA 35 Streamer Chamber experiment. Mean multiplicities and transverse mass distributions were obtained. They were compared with nucleon-nucleon data and with model predictions.

Enhanced strange particle production, nonstatistical multiplicity fluctuations and two-pion Bose-Einstein correlations were measured in O, S-nucleus reactions at 60 and 200 GeV/nucleon. The results indicate significant collective effects in high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions.

Pion interferometry is the unique tool to study the space-time evolution of the systems created in the ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions. Five different data sets have been analyzed in terms of cylindrical coordinates, and all yield consistent results. We conclude that the system expands longitudinally, the decoupling proper time is ∼5 fm/c, the duration of particle emission is very short

Rapidity spectra of pions and participant protons in S + S collisions at 200 GeV/nucleon are compared with N + N data. The average energy loss of the participating nucleons increases by 23% and is balanced by the energy of the final state particles, through a twofold increase of strange particle production and a similar enhancement, assumed for baryon-antibaryon pairs.

The design of a Time Projection Chamber (TPC) detector with complete pad coverage is presented. The TPC will allow the measurements of high multiplicity (~200 tracks), relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions initiated with the heaviest, most energetic projectiles available at the LBL BEVALAC accelerator facility. The front end electronics, composed of over 15,000 time sampling channels, will be located on the chamber.

An analysis of the proton rapidity distribution in central {sup 16} O + Au collisions at 60 GeV/n measured in the NA35 streamer chamber detector at the CERN SPS is presented. The charge excess of positive particles over negative particles was measured. The rapidity distribution of the charge excess which can be associated with the primordial protons in the collision is studies in terms of the nuclear stopping power and is compared to the predictions of various models. 7 refs., 2 figs.

An exact decomposition of the scattering amplitudes into the nearside and farside components has been performed for the elastic scattering of 33 MeV 3 He particles by nuclei. Calculations have been carried out for 40 Ca, 54 Fe, 89 Y, 90,91 Zr, 207,208 Pb and 209 Bi and compared with the available cross section and polarization data. In particular the behaviour of the vector analysing powers is examined. Calculations of the interference between the nearside and farside components demonstrate that the interference plays a significant role in certain mass/energy regions. Regions where the scattering is dominated by the nearside component are discussed.

Recent results from the NA35 Collaboration are presented for the reactions of 60 and 200 GeV/nucleon p and 16 O, and 200 GeV/nucleon 32 S with various targets ranging from S to Au. Midrapidity transverse energy distributions and forward energy flow, p⊥ spectra and rapidity distributions of hadrons are presented. Two-pion interferometry results are discussed. Neutral strange particle yields and p⊥ distributions are presented. Conclusions are drawn from the experimental results.
