Abstract

A multi-chip, large area hybrid silicon pixel detector has been integrated in a particle physics experiment for the first time. The plane had 72K 75 μm × 500 μm sensor elements, covering a total area of about 30 cm2. It was constructed and characterized in a collaboration between heavy-ion experiment WA97 and R&D project RD19. Several such planes will be incorporated in a hyperon telescope, in order to improve tracking in the high multiplicity environment of central lead-lead collisions at the SPS. Results on the characterization of this detector in a proton beam at the Omega spectrometer at CERN are presented and discussed.

Abstract

The uniformity of discriminator threshold and the precision of internal delay have been studied on single `Omega3/LHC1' pixel readout chips and on arrays of 24 chips containing 48 768 active pixels. On single chips we measured a threshold variation of 400e−r.m.s. for a mean threshold setting of 4000e−. The internal delay distribution shows a standard deviation of 6ns on a single chip and 16ns on the large arrays, after applying a 3-bit delay adjustment. These results, obtained using an electrical stimulus, were confirmed by tests in a beam of high-energy particles.

Abstract

The SYRMEP (SYnchrotron Radiation for MEdical Physics) collaboration is presently taking data at a beamline at the synchrotron ELETTRA in Trieste to study the performances of a digital silicon pixel imaging system for mammography. Images are obtained with a scanning technique in the energy range 15–30keV. The readout electronics operates in a single photon counting mode with a photon rate of about 106/(mm2s), which is still 4 times lower than the maximum rate reachable with the present beamline configuration. Two different detector layouts have been designed, the first one consisting of a single-layer silicon microstrip detector positioned edge-on with respect to the beam, and the second innovative one represented by a matrix of these detectors stacked to cover the full beam dimension (100×4mm2). We present here the results obtained with a single-layer detector and a double-layer detector (both 5cm wide) with mammographic phantoms and human breast tissue.

Abstract

The knowledge of the dose and of the energy spectrum of the X-rays delivered to the patient during a radiological examination allows in principle the computation of the number of photons per unit surface useful for a good mammography. The film-screen assembly detectors used in the present standard practice require a number of photons per unit surface which, from a statistical point of view, would be unnecessarily high if single photon counting detectors with efficiency near to one were available. We discuss a possible solid state detector with these characteristics. Moreover, we propose the use of an X-ray monochromatic beam from a synchrotron radiation source in order to perform the examination at the energy where the signal to noise ratio has a maximum. Using the proposed detector in such a beam a substantial dose reduction can be foreseen.

Abstract

The inner tracking system of the ALICE detector for PbPb collisions at the LHC require a very good granularity in the innermost planes, due to the high particle density, up to 8000 particles per unit of rapidity. The silicon drift detectors are a very good candidate for this application, but up to now no large system using this technology has been industrially produced and operated in experiments. One of the first steps towards large scale production is the study of the doping uniformity in commercially available Si wafers. The understanding of doping fluctuations is of fundamental importance since they introduce deviations of the electron trajectories from the expected ones. In addition, it is also necessary to know the changes possibly introduced by different processing steps in the resistivity profiles. We report here the results of measurements of resistivity profiles for NTD silicon wafers both before and after processing.

Abstract

The SYRMEP approach to digital mammography implies the use of a monochromatic X-ray beam from a synchrotron source and a slot of superimposed silicon microstrip detectors as a scanning image receptor. The microstrips are read by 32-channel chips mounted on 7-layer hybrid circuits which receive control signals and operating voltages from a MASTER-SLAVE configuration of cards.

Abstract

By use of extensive simulation, it is shown how a spread of the aluminium metallization over the interacthodic field oxide sensibly lowers the electric field at reverse biased p+n junctions, thus allowing use of higher drift fields. Based on the simulation results, the layout of a few test structures implementing alternative technological choices has been defined. The fabrication of these prototype detectors is presently in progress.
