1. An assembly line for the construction of ultra-radio-pure detectors

Abstract

The 19 towers constituting the CUORE detector are an assembly of ultra-radio-pure components made of copper and PTFE plus tellurium dioxide crystals for a total of more than 10,000 pieces. A dedicated assembly line is mandatory to handle and assemble those parts and to minimize the risk of recontamination induced by external agents both during their construction and during their storage prior to installation inside the cryostat. The assembly strategy and the tool design proposed in this paper and developed for CUORE offer solutions that can be extended to the construction of similar-size detectors with strict requirements regarding contamination.

Abstract

TeO2 crystals are currently used as bolometric detectors in experiments searching for the neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te. The extreme rarity of the studied signal forces the experiments to reach an ultra low background level. The main background source is represented by α particles emitted by radioactive contaminants placed in the materials that compose and surround the detector. Recent measurements show that a particle discrimination in TeO2 bolometers detecting the light emitted by β / γ particles is possible, opening the possibility to make large improvements in the performance of experiments based on this kind of materials. In order to understand the nature of this light emission a measurement at room temperature with TeO2 crystals was performed. According to these results, the detected light was compatible with the Cherenkov emission, even though the scintillation hypothesis could not be discarded. In this work a Monte Carlo (MC) simulation of the Cherenkov radiation emitted by TeO2 crystal when crossed by cosmic muons was performed. The data from MC and the room temperature measurement are perfectly compatible and prove that the Cherenkov light is the only component of the light yield of TeO2 crystals.

Abstract

The BABAR detector has operated nearly 200 Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs), constructed as part of an upgrade of the forward endcap muon detector, for the past two years. The RPCs experience widely different background and luminosity-driven singles rates (0.01–10 Hz/cm 2 ) depending on position within the endcap. Some regions have integrated over 0.3 C/cm 2 . RPC efficiency measured with cosmic rays is high and stable. The average efficiency measured with beam is also high. However, a few of the highest rate RPCs have suffered efficiency losses of 5–15%. Although constructed with improved techniques and minimal use of linseed oil, many of the RPCs, which are operated in streamer mode, have shown increased dark currents and noise rates that are correlated with the direction of the gas flow and the integrated current. Studies of the above aging effects are presented and correlated with detector operating conditions.

Abstract

In this paper we describe the performance of several Glass RPCs, where the water-based graphite coating is replaced by a synthetic coating applied using the screen printing technique. As expected, the performance of the detectors is good and reproducible due to the accurate control of the coating resistivity value. The resistance of the coating to the action of mechanical and chemical agents permits an easy electrode cleaning and mounting with respect to the RPC coated with the graphite varnish. This coating, together with the use of float glass as electrode material, allows an industrial production, where the detector characteristics can be tailored as a function of the experiment requirements.

After discussing the motivations for the project, the automated equipment used for the BaBar Drift Chamber stringing is described. Details are given mainly concerning the crucial points of setting-up and calibration. The focus is on the high accuracy reached by a large and complex mechanical tool.

Abstract

The RD22 Collaboration has performed several measurements on the extraction of protons from the CERN-SPS by planar channeling in bent silicon monocrystals. Extraction efficiencies of about 10% have been routinely achieved for a bending angle of 8.5 mrad with the SPS running at 120 GeV.

Abstract

The L3 experiment is one of the six large detectors designed for the new generation of electron-positron accelerators. It is the only detector that concentrates its efforts on limited goals of measuring electrons, muons and photons. By not attempting to identify hadrons, L3 has been able to provide an order of magnitude better resolution for electrons, muons and photons. Vertices and hadron jets are also studied. The construction of L3 has involved much state of the art technology in new principles of vertex detection and in new crystals for large scale electromagnetic shower detection and ultraprecise muon detection. This paper presents a summary of the construction of L3.

Abstract

The principle of operation of a newly developed proximity focused Hybrid Photon Detector is described. The HPD characteristics, performance and calibration are reported. Results from beam tests of aerogel threshold counters read out by HPD and the particle identification performance are presented.

Abstract

A method to calibrate the L3 electromagnetic calorimeter with cosmic muons has been tested on a matrix of 100 tapered BGO crystals. Calibration constants in the energy range of 20–30 MeV were measured at the 2% level collecting about 200 muons per crystal. The results are in agreement with the calibration constant determined using a 10 GeV electron beam.

Abstract

The light response of individual cells of a homogenous calorimeter is expressed as a function of variables measured by cosmic rays. We derive a specific method to monitor the energy behaviour of the calorimeter by cosmic rays. A set of correction coefficients can be defined and applied to the calibration constants, should any variation of the light response occur.

A calibration study was performed on a prototype of the L3 BGO electromagnetic calorimeter. The accuracy and stability reached is a small fraction of the typical detector resolution.
