SESAME (Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Application in the Middle East) is a “third-generation” synchrotron light source. The Middle East’s first major international research centre, established as cooperative venture by the scientists and governments of the region, is situated in Jordan. On the basis of the agreement signed between INFN and SESAME, our collaboration has designed and is building a Fluorescence Detector System based on 64 SDDs, each having a 9 mm 2 non-collimated sensitive area, realized with eight monolithic arrays for a total collimated sensitive area of 499 mm 2 . The instrument will be used at the beamline dedicated to x-ray absorption spectroscopy in the energy range 3–30 keV with the capability of reaching a maximum counting rate of at least 3.2 Mcps. The energy resolution required for this application is below 150 eV FWHM @5.9 keV. We plan to have the system completely operative by July 2018. We report on the main building blocks of this system, dedicated to SESAME, and describe the experimental performances measured in the lab and on the XAFS beamline of ELETTRA Sincrotrone Trieste, Italy. In the very first tests the system was successfully operated up to 8 Mcounts/s. The energy resolution below 150 eV @5.9 keV was measured using a 1 . 6 μ s peaking time with the detector cooled to 10 °C.

FLARES is an innovative project in the field of rare events searches, such as the search for the neutrinoless double beta decay. It aims at demonstrating the high potential of a technique that combines ultra-pure scintillating crystals with arrays of high performance silicon drift detectors, operated at about 120 K, to reach a 1% level energy resolution. The proposed technique will combine in a single device all the demanding features needed by an ideal experiment looking for rare events. The performance of a first production of matrices of silicon drift detectors as well as first measurements of the low temperature light yield of a selection of high purity scintillating crystals will be presented and discussed. © 2016 Elsevier B.V.

Silicon drift detectors (SDD) of small dimensions (up to 1 cm 2 ) have been successfully employed in X-ray spectroscopy due to their small anode geometry, which allows to minimize the electronic noise due to the readout device. Many applications, however, require large sensitive areas to be covered (e.g. X-ray astronomy), so that these detectors are effectively impractical. We present the spectroscopic performance of a 53 cm 2 sensitive area, multi-anode SDD, measured at room temperature using an eight-channel readout setup. The measurements, taken using 55 Fe and 241 Am sources, and X-ray tubes generating energies down to 2 keV, show energy resolutions in the range 290–570 eV FWHM, at 20 °C, depending on the number of anodes collecting the signal. Further developments we are carrying out could improve the detector characteristics and allow to approach the performance of small area SDDs.

The Pamela apparatus will allow precise measurements of cosmic rays in Low Earth Orbit, mainly focusing on the antiparticles component. The apparatus is now ready for flight, and the launch is foreseen during June 2006. The paper briefly reports the status of the experiment, and the performances of the various components as measured before the launch.

PAMELA is a satellite-borne experiment designed to make long duration measurements of the cosmic radiation in Low Earth Orbit. It is devoted to the detection of the cosmic-ray spectra in the 100 MeV 300 GeV range with primary scientific goal the measurement of antiproton and positron spectra over the largest energy range ever achieved. Other tasks include the search for antinuclei with unprecedented sensitivity and the measurement of the light nuclear component of cosmic rays. In addition, PAMELA can investigate phenomena connected with solar and Earth physics. The apparatus consists of: a Time of Flight system, a magnetic spectrometer, an electromagnetic imaging calorimeter, a shower tail catcher scintillator, a neutron detector and an anticoincidence system. In this work we present some measurements of galactic, secondary and trapped particles performed in the first months of operation.

In the framework of the INFN R&D project CASIS, a 6-channel prototype of an integrated front-end circuit optimized for silicon calorimeters to be used in future astroparticle physics experiments was designed and realized in a CMOS 0.35 μm technology. Five channels feature a double-gain charge sensitive preamplifier with real-time automatic gain selection, a correlated double sampling filter and, for test purposes, a fully differential, 12-bit cyclic ADC. A sixth channel, featuring only the ADC, is also implemented. The circuit design and test results are presented in this paper. The design goals of a linear dynamic range of 10 4 MIP (50 pC) in “low-gain” mode and a signal-to-noise ratio of 5:1 for single-MIP signals (with an input capacitive load of 300 pF) in “high-gain” mode were achieved.

A new balloon-borne experiment is proposed which will measure high-energy light isotopes at the top of the Earth's atmosphere and cosmic ray muons at fixed altitudes within the Earth's atmosphere.

A silicon drift detector (SDD) prototype where the drift electrode also plays the role of a high-voltage divider has been realised and characterised for spectroscopic applications at near-room temperatures. Among the advantages of this design, is the absence of metal on the sensitive surface which makes this detector interesting for soft X-rays. The detector prototype has a large sensitive area (2]130 mm2) and the charge is collected by two anodes (butter#y-like detector). The energy resolution of a such a detector has been investigated at near-room temperatures using a commercial, hybrid, low-noise charge-sensitive preampli"er. A very low noise, 32-channel preamplifier/shaper chip has been designed for the analogue readout of silicon detectors. The circuit has been optimized in view of the operation of silicon drift detectors, which have very low capacitance and produce gaussian signals of σ of few tens of ns. The chip (OLA) has been designed and manufactured using the SHPi full-custom bipolar process by Tektronix. Each channel is composed by a preamplifier, a shaper and a symmetrical line driver, which allows to drive either a positive and a negative single ended output separately on 50 Ω impedance or a differential twisted pair. The intrinsic peaking time of the circuit is ∼60 ns , and the noise is below 250 electrons at zero input load capacitance. The power consumption is 2 mW/channel, mostly due to the output driver.

A silicon-tungsten calorimeter has been developed to be flown in the Wizard/CAPRICE balloon borne experiment to measure the flux of antiprotons, positrons and light nuclei in the cosmic radiation. The calorimeter is composed of 8 .r. .v silicon sampling planes [active area (48 X 48) cm’] interleaved with 7 tungsten absorbers (7 radiation lengths): it provides the topology of the interacting events together with an independent measurement of the deposited energy. Details of the front-end electronics and of the read-out system are given and the overall performances during pre-flight ground operations are described as well.

This report presents the results obtained with a prototype silicon-tungsten (Si-W) electromagnetic calorimeter, conceived as a fine-grained imaging device to carry out studies of the antimatter component in primary cosmic radiation. The calorimeter prototype contains 20 x , y sampling layers interleaved with 19 showering material planes. One sensitive layer is obtained with two silicon strip detectors (Si-D) (60 × 60) mm 2 , each divided into 16 strips, 3.6 mm wide; the two detectors are assembled back to back with perpendicular strips. This allows the transverse distributions of the shower in both coordinates at each sampling (0.5 X 0 ) to be pictured. The basic characteristics of the design and the experimental results obtained on a test beam at the CERN proton synchrotron (PS) for electrons and pions are reported. The main results presented are the response of the calorimeter to the electron at various energies (1–7 GeV), and the transverse shower profiles at different calorimeter depths as well as the patterns of the electromagnetic shower and those of the interacting and non-interacting pions. The capability of the calorimeter in measuring the direction of the incoming electromagnetic particle from the pattern of the shower has been evaluated at different energies. These results are encouraging in view of the possible use of this detector to search for high-energy γ sources in space.
