The projected range distributions of 5–25 keV 4He+ ions in Nb, Cu, Al, and Be, spanning values of LSS reduced energy ϵ from 0.5 to 28, have been measured with an accuracy

Further analysis of the swelling of Nb under He irradiation at 5–25 keV reveals that the swelling is directly proportional to total fluence retained, i.e. 2 × 10 −23 cm 3 /He atom, irrespective of the energy (and hence of the width and shape of the He distribution). This is consistent with the hypothesis that local swelling is linearly related to local He concentration. We have also measured that concentration as a function of depth with a resolution of ∼ 10 nm by the elastic recoil ion-beam technique, in order to deduce, under the linearity hypothesis, the local swelling. It is found that at 20 keV the average swelling of the blister skin is ∼ 37%.
