28. Driving mechanism of sol plasma flow and effects on the divertor performance in JT-60U

Abstract

The measurements of the SOL flow and plasma profiles both at the high-field-side (HFS) and low-field-side (LFS), for the first time, identified the SOL flow pattern and its driving mechanism. ‘Flow reversal’ was found near the HFS and LFS separatrix of the main plasma for the ion ∇B drift direction towards the divertor. ‘Flow reversal’ at the main SOL was reproduced numerically using the UEDGE code with the plasma drifts included although Mach numbers in measurements were greater than those obtained numerically. Particle fluxes towards the HFS and LFS divertors produced by the parallel SOL flow and Er × B drift flow were evaluated from the measured profiles of Mach numbers, the density and the radial electric field. The drift flux in the private flux region was also evaluated, and it was found that its contribution to the HFS-enhanced asymmetry of the divertor particle flux was larger than the ion flux from the HFS SOL. The ion flux for the intense gas puff and divertor pump (‘puff and pump’) was investigated, and it was found that both the Mach number and density were enhanced, in particular, at the HFS. Ion flux at the HFS SOL can be enhanced so as to become larger than the drift flux in the private flux region.

29. Transport analysis of JT-60 plasma with the drift wave turbulence model

Abstract

Characteristics of the JT-60 plasma in both the Ohmic heating phase and the neutral beam heating phase have been studied numerically by using a one-dimensional tokamak transport code, with the thermal conductivities based on the drift wave turbulence (DWT) model. The numerical results for the central electron temperature Te(0) and the energy confinement time ?Eshow good agreement with the experimental data in the medium line averaged electron density range e~ 4 × 1019m?3, for both Ohmic heating and neutral beam'heating cases. The absorbed power degradation of is also reproduced with this model. On the other hand, the DWT model underestimates the plasma temperatures at low line averaged electron density, especially in the neutral beam heating phase, because of the strong dependence of the thermal conductivity on the electron temperature, and high temperature plasmas cannot be reproduced. This leads to a discrepancy in the edependence of ?Ebetween experiment and calculation. The current dependence of ?Eis not reproduced either, even when the Venetian blind model is used.

Abstract

By injection of high power lower hybrid (LH) waves of up to 6.0 MW into neutral beam heated (20 MW) plasmas in the medium electron density regime (e? 3.5 × 1019m-3) the plasma energy content is increased at the same incremental energy confinement time as it is increased with neutral beam heating alone. When LH heating is used in addition to thermal electron and ion heating, the beam ions are accelerated to energies considerably higher than the beam injection energy. In contrast to LH injection into ohmically heated plasmas in the same density regime, where substantial high energy electron production is observed, there are much less high energy electrons in the case of combined heating. The heating efficiency of LH waves during combined heating tends to decrease as the electron density is increased. Ray tracing analysis suggests that the accessibility condition prevents effective heating in a high density plasma. Calculation of wave damping, taking into account the beam component of the ion velocity distribution function, indicates that the waves are absorbed by beam ions before they are absorbed by electrons.

31. High ion temperatures and transport characteristics of high Zeffhydrogen plasmas in JT-60 limiter discharges

Abstract

Ion temperatures around 10 keV were obtained in JT-60 limiter plasmas by high power neutral beam heating (H0? H+), which is much higher than the maximum value of 6.6 keV obtained in JT-60 diverted plasmas. The experiment was performed in the parameter region of Ip= 1?2 MA, e(before heating) = (0.7?1.5)×1019m?3, e(end of heating) = (2.5?4.1)×1019m?3and = 19?21.8 MW. The Zeffvalues of the limiter plasmas were high (i.e. 4 to 7) compared with those of the diverted plasmas (i.e. 1 to 2). Transport analysis indicates that, since the deposition power to electrons, Pbe, increases with Zeff, high Zeffis effective in raising the electron temperature. Furthermore, it is shown that since the equipartition loss is reduced by both the increase in electron temperature and the decrease in the effective ion density, np+ nzZ2mp/mz, with increasing Zeff, high ion temperatures are obtained in limiter plasmas with high Zeff.

Abstract

The characteristics of ohmically and high power neutral beam heated (PNBI~ 20 MW) hydrogen divertor plasmas in JT-60 are analysed on the basis of a plasma fluid model. The calculated radiation loss of the divertor plasma and the density dependence of the neutral pressure in the divertor chamber are qualitatively in good agreement with the experimental results. The divertor radiation loss in ohmically heated discharges can be explained by hydrogen line radiation and impurity radiation. The higher neutral pressure in neutral beam heated discharges can be explained by the decrease of the global particle confinement time in comparison with that in ohmically heated discharges.

Abstract

Characteristics are presented of the energy confinement time resulting from neutral hydrogen beam heating of JT-60 tokamak plasmas with a plasma current, Ip, of 1-2 MA, a line averaged electron density, e, of 1.5-7 × 1019m?3and an absorbed beam power, Pabs, up to 20 MW. The plasma energy content follows an offset linear relation to the absorbed power. The incremental energy confinement time for thermal components, , is almost independent of Ipand eat 60 ms, while the incremental energy confinement time for the total plasma energy, , decreases with plasma density. The value of in JT-60 coincides with the prediction of the Shimomura-Odajima scaling of L-mode discharges.

34. A study of particle confinement properties in ohmically and neutral beam heated hydrogen plasmas in the JT-60 tokamak

Abstract

The characteristics of particle confinement and recycling of ohmically and neutral beam (NB) heated hydrogen plasmas in the JT-60 tokamak are investigated by using the global particle balance equation. The total number of ionization events is estimated by employing a simple formula for the H?radiation profile, and the gas fuelling efficiency is determined from the time derivatives of the electron density before and after gas feed termination. The global particle confinement time in the Ohmic heating divertor plasma decreases nearly inversely proportionally to the electron density, because of the enhancement of recycling in the plasma periphery. NB injection deteriorates the particle confinement time by a factor of about two. The effective particle confinement time closely related to the density control increases proportionally to the electron density in the Ohmic plasma. In contrast, the effective particle confinement time of the NB heated plasma is independent of the electron density although it decreases with the NB injection power. These results show that the plasma density can be controlled by the gas puff in both ohmically and NB heated hydrogen discharges.
