Mark Rutherford showed great care in dating the action in 'Clara Hopgood.' Rutherford exercised prudence in the last of fictional work since it contains a historical figure, the Italian revolutionary Mazzini. The latter was present in London during the time that events in the novel unfolded. Rutherford knew Mazzini's ideas and retained them faithfully in the latter's dialogues in the novel. 'Clara Hopgood' is set in London of Nov 1844 and tells of the failed relationship between Frank Palmer and Madge Hopgood.
