Magazine groups rely on sister publications to support weaker ones. So, Power & Motoryacht, which was up 29 percent from 2010 to 2011, offset other glossies and put Source Interlink up almost 4 percent in a year where 17 of 23 groups had ad page declines. Architectural Digest, Vogue and Wired each gained 9 percent, keeping losses by Conde Nast to 1 percent overall. One magazine in a small group carries a lot of weight: Intermedia Outdoors gained on the strength of Handguns, up almost 26 percent, and Departures, from American Express, was up 43 percent.
