- Abstract
Poet Stephen Spender has survived some of the most interesting and wrenching episodes in the 20th century cultural/political affairs. In this article the author talks about the book "Stephen Spender: Journals 1939-1983," edited by John Goldsmith. This book is an account of emerging unscathed and intact from pre-war Germany, post-war European decline, the rebellious late 1960s and awful taints of brief flirtations with communism and homosexuality. Spender was formed by a deeply entrenched, sensible middle class value system, however much he espoused controversial and unconventional causes and experiences.
