Abstract

The article looks at politics and economic policy in Turkey as of May 2014, focusing on public anger over the fatal mine disaster in Soma, Turkey, and the response of the government under Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of the Justice and Development Party (AKP). The author expresses the view that the disaster may be linked to the 2005 privatization of the operation of the mine, noting its operator, Soma Holding, has sharply cut costs in ways that have affected mine safety.
