Abstract

The article focuses on the book The People Win Through, by U Nu. "If the King of Siam can compose music," Burma's Premier U Nu once jocularly remarked, "why can't I write plays?" Yet this is no dilettante exercise of a politician turned playwright. It was deadly serious business for U Nu when he wrote it in 1950 as an anti-Communist propaganda piece. First distributed in mimeographed form to local dramatic troupes, it was performed clandestinely throughout Burma at a time when civil war still raged in the land and Communist terrorism was still very much of a present danger. The play is a polemic against the capture of power by force, recounting the Burmese people's rebuff of a Communist insurrection.
