Anterior brain asymmetry, assessed through the alpha and beta band in resting-state electroencephalogram (EEG) is associated with approach-related behavioral dispositions, particularly with aggression in the general population. To date, the association between frontal asymmetry and aggression has not been examined in highly aggressive groups. We examined the topographic characteristics of alpha and beta activity, the relation of both asymmetry metrics to trait aggression, and whether alpha asymmetry was extreme in anterior regions according to clinical standards in a group of imprisoned violent offenders. As expected, these individuals were characterized by stronger right than left-hemispheric alpha activity, which was putatively extreme in anterior regions in one third of the cases. We also report that in line with observations made in the general population, aggression was associated with stronger right-frontal alpha activity in these violent individuals. This suggests that frontal alpha asymmetry, as a correlate of trait aggression, might be utilizable as an outcome measure in studies which assess the effects of anti-aggressiveness training in violent offenders., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Sixteen chronic back pain (CBP) patients, 16 tension headache (THA) patients and 16 healthy controls (HC) were exposed to four series of ten electric stimuli at perception threshold, pain threshold and 10% below pain tolerance. The EEG was recorded from three sites, in addition, the EMG from the m. frontalis and m. erector spinae, heart rate and skin conductance were assessed. The CBP patients showed significantly lower pain threshold and pain tolerance values than the HC and the THA patients whereas the THA patients displayed a higher pain tolerance. Habituation was reduced in the CBP group. N150, P260, P300 and N500 were not significantly different between the groups nor were there significant group differences in the peripheral measures. However, since the stimulation intensity was significantly lower in the CBP patients, these data are indicative of both enhanced central and peripheral reactivity. The observed lack of habituation may contribute to the persistence of chronic pain.

The objective of this study was to develop and test a brief and unobtrusive instrument to detect exaggeration and simulation in whiplash syndrome. The instrument consists of eight scenarios with ten response options that have to be ordered according to how easy a behavior is to perform. Twenty-five simulating and 25 non-simulating patients with whiplash syndrome of grades 2 and 3 according to the Quebec Task Force classification as well as 25 simulating and 25 non-simulating controls completed the instrument. In a cross-validation study 20 controls and 20 patients participated. Malingering and exaggeration scores were determined for each subject and patient. The scores were summed up and compared across malingering and exaggerating subjects and controls and cut-off values were determined to classify the patients. T-tests and a discriminant analysis were used to determine classification accuracy. The instrument correctly identified 94% of the simulators and 84% of the exaggerators in both samples. This brief and unobtrusive instrument can detect exaggeration and simulation in whiplash syndrome.

While psychopaths (PP) lack anticipatory fear, social phobics (SP) are characterized by excessive fear. Criminal PP, SP and healthy controls (HC) participated in differential aversive delay conditioning with neutral faces as conditioned (CS) and painful pressure as unconditioned stimuli. Functional magnetic resonance imaging revealed differential activation in the limbic-prefrontal circuit (orbitofrontal cortex, insula, anterior cingulate, amygdala) in the HC. By contrast, the PP displayed brief amygdala, but no further brain activation. The SP showed increased activity to the faces in the amygdala and orbitofrontal cortex already during habituation. Thus, a hypoactive frontolimbic circuit may represent the neural correlate of psychopathic behavior, whereas an overactive frontolimbic system may underly social fear.

We studied the effects of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) on slow cortical potentials (SCPs) of the brain elicited during performance of a feedback and reward task. Ten healthy participants were trained to self-regulate their SCP amplitude using visual feedback and reward for increased or decreased amplitudes. Subjects participated in 27 runs (each comprising 70 trials) under three different conditions: single-pulse TMS delivered with the coil centered over Cz (vertex), over a lateral scalp position (LSP), which increased task difficulty, and in the absence of stimulation. Cz stimulation led to a non-significant enhancement of negative SCPs, while LSP stimulation led to a significant increase of positive SCPs. These results are consistent with the idea that enhanced task difficulty, as in LSP stimulation, enhances cognitive processing load leading to an increase of positive SCPs. Additionally, the data raise the hypothesis that TMS delivered to bilateral midcentral regions could modulate the amplitude of negative SCPs.

The primary sensory cortex has usually been regarded as a necessary step in the information processing stream leading to conscious awareness. Recently, it has been proposed that that higher order associative areas rather than the primary sensory areas are the neural basis of conscious perception. In two patients with tumors near the central region we recorded magnetic somatosensory evoked fields. Magnetic source imaging revealed early (40 ms) neural activation in primary somatosensory cortex and absence of later (>60 ms) neural activation in the primary and associative areas in these patients. None of the patients showed conscious awareness of somatosensory stimuli applied to the corresponding body site although the first component of the evoked field was within normal limits. The time course of the magnetic responses and additional evidence on intensity ratings of somatosensory stimuli suggest that early activity in the primary somatosensory cortex is not sufficient for conscious experience to emerge.

Recording of slow brain potentials (SPs) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TCMS) of the human motor cortex were combined to probe the relationship between SP level and excitability of cortical neurons. In experiment 1, TCMS was applied during and shortly after the warning interval in a forewarned reaction time task. Electromyographic (EMG) responses to TCMS increased only slightly during the warning interval and were significantly elevated 150 ms after the imperative stimulus. In experiment 2, TCMS was applied during biofeedback-induced cortical positivity and negativity. In this non-motor task a dependence of TCMS response on SP amplitude was not significant. Results indicate higher local excitability of motor cortex during cortical negativity when a preparatory motor task is required. TCMS may better be suited to probe processes involved in motor tasks rather than non-motor and cognitive conditions.

The present study investigated the processing of painful electrical stimuli in patients with unilateral frontal or parietal lobe damage and matched control subjects. Patients with frontal lesions showed increased pain thresholds when the stimuli were administered contralateral to the lesion. While the peak-to-peak amplitudes of the N150/P250 components of the somatosensory potentials increased linearly with stimulus intensity in the control subjects, the responses in the frontal group did not change significantly between stimulation at pain and tolerance threshold. There was no evidence for altered pain processing in patients with parietal lobe lesions. The findings of the present study support the hypothesis of an involvement of the frontal cortex in pain perception in humans.

Differential hemispheric involvement in controlling simple and complex motor movements was investigated in humans using EEG spectral responses. Analysis of spectral power in the alpha band revealed the following. While during a simple motor task (tapping) signs of unilateral cortical activation were present, more complex sequential motor behaviour (Luria finger apposition task) led to symmetrical bihemispheric activation. It appears that unilateral cortical processing is present in the normal brain when very simple computations are performed. Bilateral hemispheric activity and interhemispheric interaction may be general features of more complex information processing in the cortex.

The purpose of this study was the determination of the relationship between the dimensional complexity of the electroencephalogam (EEG) and the level of intelligence in humans. In two experiments 34 male subjects were divided into two groups, with high and low levels of intelligence (as measured by the intelligence quotient (IQ)). During a resting phase and various mental imagery conditions the EEG was recorded from several scalp sites. Nonlinear analysis, based on the theory of deterministic chaos, revealed that subjects with high IQs demonstrate higher dimensional complexity of the EEG attractors than subjects with low IQs only during resting conditions. During performance of the imagery tasks the less intelligent subjects increase the complexity of electrical brain dynamics such that IQ-dependency vanishes. The gross (mass) neuronal manifestation of general intelligence seems to depend on task conditions and may be related to the individual brain dynamics only when no specific task is present.
