Abstract There is now a considerable body of evidence to suggest that internal representations of the body can be meaningfully separated into at least two general levels; body image as a perceptual construct and body schema as a motor metric. However, recent studies with eating disordered individuals have suggested that there may in fact be more interaction between these two representations than first thought. We aimed to investigate how body image might act to influence body schema within a typical, healthy population. 100 healthy adult women were asked to judge the smallest gap between a pair of sliding doors that they could just pass through. We then determined whether these estimates were sufficient to predict the size of the smallest gap that they could actually pass through, or whether perceptual and attitudinal body image information was required in order to make these predictions. It was found that perceptual body image did indeed mediate performance on the egocentric (but not allocentric) motor imagery affordance task, but only for those individuals with raised body image concerns and low self-esteem; body schema was influenced by both the perceptual and attitudinal components of body image in those with more negative bodily attitudes. Furthermore, disparities between perceived versus actual size were associated with body parts that had larger variations in adipose/muscle-dependent circumference. We therefore suggest that it may be the affective salience of a distorted body representation that mediates the degree to which it is incorporated into the current body state. Although emerging neuropsychological evidence supports the involvement of temporal areas, and in particular the right superior temporal gyrus (STG), in allocentric neglect deficits, the role of STG in healthy spatial processing remains elusive. While several functional brain imaging studies have demonstrated involvement of the STG in tasks involving explicit stimulus-centered judgments, prior rTMS studies targeting the right STG did not find the expected neglect-like rightward bias in size judgments using the conventional landmark task. The objective of the current study was to investigate whether disruption of the right STG using inhibitory repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) could impact stimulus-centered, allocentric spatial processing in healthy individuals. A lateralized version of the landmark task was developed to accentuate the dissociation between viewer-centered and stimulus-centered reference frames. We predicted that inhibiting activity in the right STG would decrease accuracy because of induced rightward bias centered on the line stimulus irrespective of its viewer-centered or egocentric locations. Eleven healthy, right-handed adults underwent the lateralized landmark task. After viewing each stimulus, participants had to judge whether the line was bisected, or whether the left (left-long trials) or the right segment (right-long trials) of the line was longer. Participants repeated the task before (pre-rTMS) and after (post-rTMS) receiving 20 min of 1 Hz rTMS over the right STG, the right supramarginal gyrus (SMG), and the vertex (a control site) during three separate visits. Linear mixed models for binomial data were generated with either accuracy or judgment errors as dependent variables, to compare 1) performance across trial types (bisection, non-bisection), and 2) pre- vs. post-rTMS performance between the vertex and the STG and the vertex and the SMG. Line eccentricity (z = 4.31, p < 0.0001) and line bisection (z = 5.49, p < 0.0001) were significant predictors of accuracy. In the models comparing the effects of rTMS, a significant two-way interaction with STG (z = −3.09, p = 0.002) revealed a decrease in accuracy of 9.5% and an increase in errors of the right-long type by 10.7% on bisection trials, in both left and right viewer-centered locations. No significant changes in leftward errors were found. These findings suggested an induced stimulus-centered rightward bias in our participants after STG stimulation. Notably, accuracy or errors were not influenced by SMG stimulation compared to vertex. It has been established that processes relating to ‘spatial attention’ are implemented at cortical level by goal-directed (top-down) and stimulus-driven (bottom-up) networks. Spatial neglect in brain-damaged individuals has been interpreted as a distinguished exemplar for a disturbance of these processes. The present paper elaborates this assumption. Functioning of the two attentional networks seem to dissociate in spatial neglect; behavioral studies of patients' orienting and exploration behavior point to a disturbed stimulus-driven but preserved goal-directed attention system. When a target suddenly appears somewhere in space, neglect patients demonstrate disturbed detection and orienting if it is located in contralesional direction. In contrast, if neglect patients explore a scene with voluntarily, top-down controlled shifts of spatial attention, they perform movements that are oriented into all spatial directions without any direction-specific disturbances. The paper thus argues that not the top-down control of spatial attention itself, rather a body-related matrix on top of which this process is executed, seems affected. In that sense, the traditional role of spatial neglect as a stroke model for ‘spatial attention’ requires adjustment. Beyond its insights into the human stimulus-driven attentional system, the disorder most notably provides vistas in how our brain encodes topographical information and organizes spatially oriented action – including the top-down control of spatial attention – in relation to body position. Neglect patients show contralesional deficits in egocentric and object-centred visuospatial tasks. The extent to which these different phenomena are modulated by sensory stimulation remains to be clarified. Subliminal galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) induces imperceptible, polarity-specific changes in the cortical vestibular systems without the unpleasant side effects (nystagmus, vertigo) induced by caloric vestibular stimulation. While previous studies showed vestibular stimulation effects on egocentric spatial neglect phenomena, such effects were rarely demonstrated in object-centred neglect. Here, we applied bipolar subsensory GVS over the mastoids (mean intensity: 0.7 mA) to investigate its influence on egocentric (digit cancellation, text copying), object-centred (copy of symmetrical figures), or both (line bisection) components of visual neglect in 24 patients with unilateral right hemisphere stroke. Patients were assigned to two patient groups (impaired vs. normal in the respective task) on the basis of cut-off scores derived from the literature or from normal controls. Both groups performed all tasks under three experimental conditions carried out on three separate days: (a) sham/baseline GVS where no electric current was applied, (b) left cathodal/right anodal (CL/AR) GVS and (c) left anodal/right cathodal (AL/CR) GVS, for a period of 20 min per session. CL/AR GVS significantly improved line bisection and text copying whereas AL/CR GVS significantly ameliorated figure copying and digit cancellation. These GVS effects were selectively observed in the impaired- but not in the unimpaired patient group. In conclusion, subliminal GVS modulates ego- and object-centred components of visual neglect rapidly. Implications for neurorehabilitation are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Spatial position of an object can be represented in the human brain based on two types of reference frames: allocentric and egocentric. The perception/action hypothesis of the ventral/dorsal visual stream proposed that allocentric reference frame codes object positions relative to another object/background subserving conscious perception of the external world while egocentric reference frame codes object positions relative to the observer's body/body parts subserving goal-directed actions towards the objects. In three experiments of the present study, by asking congenitally deaf participants and hearing controls to perform allocentric and egocentric judgment tasks on the same stimulus set and by using the spatial congruency effect between allocentric and egocentric positions of the same target object to indicate the extent of influences between the two frames, we aimed to investigate whether the two frames and the potential interaction between them are altered after early deafness. Our results suggested that deaf participants’ responses were significantly slower in the egocentric tasks as compared to hearing controls while the two groups showed comparable task performance in the allocentric tasks, indicating that egocentric reference frame was impaired after early deafness. Moreover, the pattern of interaction between the two frames was different between deaf and hearing groups: irrelevant egocentric positions caused more interference to allocentric processing than vice versa in the hearing group while the two frames caused equivalent interference to each other in the deaf group. Further control experiments suggested that the above effects were not caused by the impaired sense of balance in the congenitally deaf participants (via open-loop pointing test), and was independent of whether the speed of allocentric and egocentric processing was equivalent or not in the hearing group. Abstract: Following brain injury, many patients experience egocentric spatial neglect, where they fail to respond to stimuli on the contralesional side of their body. On the other hand, allocentric, object-based neglect refers to the symptom of ignoring the contralesional side of objects, regardless of the objects’ egocentric position. There is an established tradition for considering these two phenomena as both behaviorally and anatomically dissociable. However, several studies and some theoretical work have suggested that these rather reflect two aspects of a unitary underlying disorder. Furthermore, in a recent large study reported that acute allocentric neglect is only observed in cases where substantial egocentric neglect is also present. In a new sample of right hemisphere stroke patients, we attempted to control for potential confounds by using a novel continuous measure for allocentric neglect (in addition to a recently developed continuous measure for egocentric neglect). Our findings suggest a strong association between egocentric and allocentric neglect. Consistent with the work of , we found allocentric behavioral deficits only in conjunction with egocentric deficits as well as a large corresponding overlap for the anatomical regions associated with egocentric and with allocentric neglect. We discuss how different anatomical and behavioral findings can be explained in a unified physiologically plausible framework, whereby allocentric and egocentric effects interact. Abstract: Patients with right hemisphere lesions often omit or misread words on the left side of a text or the initial letters of single words, a phenomenon termed neglect dyslexia (ND). Omissions of words on the contralesional side of the page are considered as egocentric or space-based errors, whereas misread words can be viewed as a type of stimulus-centered error where the left part of a single perceptual entity (the word) is neglected. Previous patient studies have shown that optokinetic stimulation (OKS) significantly modulates many facets of the neglect syndrome, including the subjective body midline, line bisection and size distortions. An open question is whether OKS can also influence omissions and stimulus-centered errors in paragraph reading in ND. The current study compared the influence of OKS on both types of reading errors using controlled indented paragraph reading tests in a group of 9 right-hemisphere lesioned patients with ND, 7 patients without ND and 9 matched healthy controls. Leftward OKS significantly reduced omissions on the left side of the text in ND. In contrast, the pattern of stimulus-centered reading errors remained unchanged. In conclusion egocentric manipulations like OKS only appear to influence space-based attentional processes evident as omissions in paragraph reading but have no impact on stimulus-centered attentional processes evident as word-based errors during paragraph reading in ND. Abstract: Patients with right hemisphere lesions often omit or misread words on the left side of a text or the beginning letters of single words which is termed neglect dyslexia (ND). Two types of reading errors are typically observed in ND: omissions and word-based reading errors. The prior are considered as space-based omission errors on the contralesional side of the page, while the latter can be viewed as a kind of stimulus- or word-based reading errors where leftsided parts of a single perceptual entity (the word) are neglected. The head, trunk and eyes are part of a hypothetical egocentric reference frame that is aligned around our body and divides space into a left and right hemispace. Previous neglect studies have shown that head- and trunk-orientation significantly influence contralesional neglect. An open question is whether such egocentric manipulations also influence omissions and word-based errors in paragraph reading in ND. The current study investigated in a sample of right-hemisphere lesioned patients with ND vs. without ND and matched healthy control subjects the influence of head-rotation (HR) on both types of reading errors using controlled indented paragraph reading tests. Passive leftward HR significantly reduced omission errors on the left side of the text in ND, but had no effect on word-based reading errors. In conclusion egocentric manipulations like HR only appear to influence space-based attentional processes in neglect evident as omissions in paragraph reading but have no impact on those attentional processes involved in word identification evident as word-based errors in paragraph reading. Abstract: We have previously shown the visual form agnosic patient D.F. has spared sensorimotor utilization of visual information relative to her poor perceptual processing of the same stimulus attributes. Her visuomotor skills are, however, only normal when egocentric visual coding can be used in the task. In other words, her egocentric sensorimotor processing is intact while her ‘allocentric’ coding of spatial position is impaired. The current investigation extends these previous observations by comparing D.F.’s performance in bimanual pointing to pairs of stimuli directly (the egocentric task) versus pointing to the homologous positions on an adjacent workspace (pantomimed reaching, the allocentric task). The results showed greatly superior pointing accuracy in direct pointing compared to pantomimed pointing. The mechanisms supporting her limited but remaining sensitivity to spatial relationships during pantomimed pointing remain unknown. These residual skills may reflect partially spared categorical coding and/or internal sensorimotor self-cueing. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Two experiments are reported that were designed to measure the accuracy and reliability of both visually guided hand movements (Exp. 1) and perceptual matching judgments (Exp. 2). The specific procedure for informing subjects of the required response on each trial was manipulated so that some tasks could only be performed using an allocentric representation of the visual target; others could be performed using either an allocentric or hand-centered representation; still others could be performed based on an allocentric, hand-centered or head/eye-centered representation. Both head/eye and hand centered representations are egocentric because they specify visual coordinates with respect to the subject. The results reveal that accuracy and reliability of both motor and perceptual responses are highest when subjects direct their response towards a visible target location, which allows them to rely on a representation of the target in head/eye-centered coordinates. Systematic changes in averages and standard deviations of responses are observed when subjects cannot direct their response towards a visible target location, but have to represent target distance and direction in either hand-centered or allocentric visual coordinates instead. Subjects’ motor and perceptual performance agree quantitatively well. These results strongly suggest that subjects process head/eye-centered representations differently from hand-centered or allocentric representations, but that they process visual information for motor actions and perceptual judgments together. Abstract: We investigate the role of vestibular information in judging the gravity-referenced eye level (i.e., earth-referenced horizon or GREL) during sagittal body tilt whilst seated. Ten bilateral labyrinthine-defective subjects (LDS) and 10 age-matched controls set a luminous dot to their perception of GREL in darkness, with and without arm pointing. Although judgements were linearly influenced by the magnitude of whole-body tilt, results showed no significant difference between LDS and age-matched controls in the subjective GREL accuracy or in the intra-subject variability of judgement. However, LDS performance without arm pointing was related to the degree of vestibular compensation inferred from another postural study performed with the same patients. LDS did not utilize upper limb input during arm pointing movements as a source of graviceptive information to compensate for the vestibular loss. The data suggest that vestibular cues are not of prime importance in GREL estimates in static conditions. The absence of difference between controls and LDS GREL performance, and the correlation between the postural task and GREL accuracy, indicate that somatosensory input may convey as much graviceptive information required for GREL judgements as the vestibular system. The present study analysed task-dependent effects on the exploratory behaviour of neglect patients during their spontaneous search of the surroundings. We were asking whether different tasks would be associated with different structuring of the visual display and, therefore, would result in different forms of neglect in one and the same brain-damaged subjects. Neglect patients’ eye and head movements were recorded when they searched for a target within a homogeneous stimulus array surrounding the subjects. Subsequently, they explored the same array which was now segmented into different areas. When the patients’ attention was allocated to the whole surrounding space, all patients completely neglected the left hemispace and spontaneously attended to the right hemispace. No significant left–right asymmetry was detected in a selected segment located in the periphery of the attended, right hemispace. However, all patients completely ignored the left part of this segment when they had to concentrate visual search on this segment alone. The results suggest an important influence of task-dependent effects on the exploratory behaviour of neglect patients. They show that one and the same physical stimulus at one and the same location in a scene might be attended or, in another situation, neglected, just depending on the behavioural goal of the subject. The findings support the idea that the brain organises and reorganises continuously the representation of the same physical input according to the changing task requirements. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
