The left inferior parietal cortex has been claimed to be the site of the verbal short-term store, yet imaging studies report activity of a homologous right-hemi sphere region in verbal working memory tasks as well. In spite of its prevalent activity, right parietal contributions to verbal working memory are poorly understood. To clarify its role in verbal working memory performance, we tested a patient with a lesion in the right parietal lobe on verbal and spatial versions of the N-back task. The patient was impaired in all the spatial conditions regardless of load (0-, 1-, and 2-back), whereas in the verbal N-back he was impaired only in the conditions with a memory demand (1- and 2-back). Given that we had presented stimuli at multiple locations in the verbal N-back, however, it remained possible that the lesion impaired spatial representation rather than verbal working memory per se. With central stimulus presentation, his performance dramatically improved indicating that his difficulty with the N-back task was largely due to his poor visuospatial abilities. Although emerging neuropsychological evidence supports the involvement of temporal areas, and in particular the right superior temporal gyrus (STG), in allocentric neglect deficits, the role of STG in healthy spatial processing remains elusive. While several functional brain imaging studies have demonstrated involvement of the STG in tasks involving explicit stimulus-centered judgments, prior rTMS studies targeting the right STG did not find the expected neglect-like rightward bias in size judgments using the conventional landmark task. The objective of the current study was to investigate whether disruption of the right STG using inhibitory repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) could impact stimulus-centered, allocentric spatial processing in healthy individuals. A lateralized version of the landmark task was developed to accentuate the dissociation between viewer-centered and stimulus-centered reference frames. We predicted that inhibiting activity in the right STG would decrease accuracy because of induced rightward bias centered on the line stimulus irrespective of its viewer-centered or egocentric locations. Eleven healthy, right-handed adults underwent the lateralized landmark task. After viewing each stimulus, participants had to judge whether the line was bisected, or whether the left (left-long trials) or the right segment (right-long trials) of the line was longer. Participants repeated the task before (pre-rTMS) and after (post-rTMS) receiving 20 min of 1 Hz rTMS over the right STG, the right supramarginal gyrus (SMG), and the vertex (a control site) during three separate visits. Linear mixed models for binomial data were generated with either accuracy or judgment errors as dependent variables, to compare 1) performance across trial types (bisection, non-bisection), and 2) pre- vs. post-rTMS performance between the vertex and the STG and the vertex and the SMG. Line eccentricity (z = 4.31, p < 0.0001) and line bisection (z = 5.49, p < 0.0001) were significant predictors of accuracy. In the models comparing the effects of rTMS, a significant two-way interaction with STG (z = −3.09, p = 0.002) revealed a decrease in accuracy of 9.5% and an increase in errors of the right-long type by 10.7% on bisection trials, in both left and right viewer-centered locations. No significant changes in leftward errors were found. These findings suggested an induced stimulus-centered rightward bias in our participants after STG stimulation. Notably, accuracy or errors were not influenced by SMG stimulation compared to vertex. This study investigated if the neural mechanisms involved in processing distance (near and far) and frame of reference (egocentric and allocentric) can be dissociated. 36 participants completed a conjunction visual search task using either an egocentric (deciding if the target was to their left or right) or an allocentric (deciding if the target was to the left or right of a reference object) frame. Both tasks were performed in near (57 cm) and far (171 cm) space conditions. Participants were separated into three groups, and each received transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to a different site; right posterior parietal cortex (rPPC), right ventral occipital cortex (rVO), or right frontal eye field (rFEF) in addition to sham TMS. The results show that rFEF is critical in the processing of each search at each distance whereas, contrary to previous detection results, TMS over rVO did not affect performance for any condition. TMS over rPPC revealed that specialised egocentric processing in the parietal cortex does not generalise to far space, providing evidence of a separation of the reference frame/distance conflation in the literature. Pure alexia is characterized by an increased word-length effect in reading. However, this disorder is usually accompanied by right homonymous hemianopia, which itself can cause a mildly increased word-length effect. Some alexic studies have used hemianopic patients with modest word-length effects: it is not clear (a) whether they had pure alexia and (b) if not, whether their results could be explained by the field defect. Our goal was to determine if impairments in visual processing claimed to be related to alexia could be replicated in homonymous hemianopia alone. Twelve healthy subjects performed five experiments used in two prior studies of alexia, under both normal and simulated hemianopic conditions, using a gaze-contingent display generated by an eye-tracker. We replicated the increased word-length effect for reading time with right homonymous hemianopia, and showed a similar effect for a lexical decision task. Simulated hemianopia impaired scanning accuracy for letter or number strings, and slowed object part processing, though the effect of configuration was not greater under hemianopic viewing. Hemianopia impaired the identification of words whose letters appeared and disappeared sequentially on the screen, with better performance on a cumulative presentation in which the letters remained on the screen. The reporting of trigrams was less accurate with hemianopia, though syllabic structure did not influence the results. We conclude that some impairments that have been attributed to the processing defects underlying alexia may actually be due to right homonymous hemianopia. Abstract: In patients with right brain damage and left visual neglect, attention tends to be captured by right-sided objects and cannot easily disengage from them. While these phenomena can account for several clinical and experimental patterns of performance such as biased visual search, its role is more controversial for other neglect-related signs, such as the typical rightward shifts in horizontal line bisection. It is thus important to see whether and how attentional orienting can bias line bisection in normal participants using standard clinical bisection stimuli. In 3 experiments, we explored the Attentional Repulsion Effect (ARE, ) on pre-bisected lines. Normal observers saw horizontal lines with a vertical bisection mark near the center, preceded by a cue to the left or right of the line, or by no cue. On each trial, observers indicated whether they saw the bisection mark to the left or at the right of the midpoint. We plotted the proportion of ‘seen-at-right’ responses as a function of the mark''s actual position. For uncued lines, the point of subjective equality was slightly at the left of the true center, consistent with the pseudoneglect phenomenon. Right-sided cues shifted the apparent bisection point to the left (and vice versa), as predicted by the ARE. Similar results occurred with different task instructions (compare the length of the left-sided line segment to the right-sided segment) and in the presence or absence of central fixation marks. These results obtained in normal participants support attentional accounts of biased line bisection in neglect patients. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Visual deficits in early and high level processing nodes have been documented in Parkinson''s disease (PD). Non-motor high level visual integration deficits in PD seem to have a cortical basis independently of a low level retinal contribution. It is however an open question whether sensory and visual attention deficits can be separated in PD. Here, we have explicitly separated visual and attentional disease related patterns of performance, by using bias free staircase procedures measuring psychophysical contrast sensitivity across visual space under covert attention conditions with distinct types of cues (valid, neutral and invalid). This further enabled the analysis of patterns of dorsal–ventral (up–down) and physiological inter-hemispheric asymmetries. We have found that under these carefully controlled covert attention conditions PD subjects show impaired psychophysical performance enhancement by valid attentional cues. Interestingly, PD patients also show paradoxically increased visual homogeneity of spatial performance profiles, suggesting flattening of high level modulation of spatial attention. Finally we have found impaired higher level attentional modulation of contrast sensitivity in the visual periphery, where mechanisms of covert attention are at higher demands. These findings demonstrate a specific loss of attentional mechanisms in PD and a pathological redistribution of spatial mechanisms of covert attention. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The spatial relation between two objects may be described either precisely or more coarsely in abstract terms, denoted as coordinate and categorical descriptions, respectively. These descriptions may reflect the outcomes of two spatial coding processes, which are realized in the left- and right-hemisphere. Support for this account comes from visual field effects in categorical and coordinate judgment tasks and from patient studies. In the current study, this hypothesis was tested by using event-related potentials (ERPs) and source localization. ERPs yield information about the processing stage at which the hypothesized categorical and coordinate processing diverge due to different task demands, especially in our S1–S2 version of the Bar Dot task. A centrally presented Bar Dot (S1) was followed after 2.5s by a second one (S2) in the left or right visual field; participants had to judge whether S2 matched S1 at the categorical, or, in a second task, at the coordinate level. Behavioral measures revealed a left-field advantage in the coordinate task that was absent in the categorical task. S1s elicited stronger early and late bilateral posterior responses in the coordinate than in the categorical task, possibly related to a compensatory strategy at the level of encoding and spatial memory. S2s elicited only stronger early contralateral responses, and stronger late right-hemisphere responses in the categorical task. It is proposed that the left-field advantage in the coordinate task may be due to differences in spatial resolution in perceptual encoding of the left- and right-hemispheres that are largely unaffected by the task at hand. Abstract: Many aspects of spatial neglect can be explained as arising from competition for attentional selection, with salient ipsilesional stimuli emerging as the winner more often than contralesional stimuli. The outcome of the competition, however, can be affected both by bottom-up perceptual factors such as the gestalt properties of the display and by top-down factors such as expectancy or stimulus blocking. This study examines whether the competition for attentional selection can be modulated by manipulating the probability of the target''s location in hemispatial neglect. Five patients with left-sided hemispatial neglect and a group of control participants performed a visual target discrimination task. In equal probability blocks, the target appeared randomly in any of six possible horizontal locations (three left, three right) whereas in biased blocks, the target appeared in the mid-location on the left on 50% of the trials and in each of the other locations on 10% of the trials. The target appeared either alone or was accompanied by a distractor on the opposite side. The results showed that the spatial bias facilitated detection of all left-sided targets in the neglect group, but was more spatially specific in the control group. Furthermore, while distractors on either side interfered with target processing in both groups, the patterns differed across the visual field. Finally, the magnitude of facilitation due to the bias was greatest in the condition with the most inhibition, i.e. a left-sided target accompanied by a right-sided distractor in the neglect group. These data underscore the competitive push–pull relationship between different bottom-up and top-down attentional factors, particularly within neglect patients, in whom a strong ipsilesional attentional bias already exists. Peripersonal space (PPS) represents the region of space surrounding the body. A pivotal function of PPS is to coordinate defensive responses to threat. We have previously shown that a centrally-presented, looming fearful face, signalling a potential threat in one's surroundings, modulates spatial processing by promoting a redirection of sensory resources away from the face towards the periphery, where the threat may be expected - but only when the face is presented in near, rather than far space. Here, we use electrophysiological measures to investigate the neural mechanism underlying this effect. Participants made simple responses to tactile stimuli delivered on the cheeks, while watching task-irrelevant neutral or fearful avatar faces, looming towards them either in near or far space. Simultaneously with the tactile stimulation, a ball with a checkerboard pattern (probe) appeared to the left or right of the avatar face. Crucially, this probe could either be close to the avatar face, and thus more central in the participant's vision, or further away from the avatar face, and thus more peripheral in the participant's vision. Electroencephalography was continuously recorded. Behavioural results confirmed that in near space only, and for fearful relative to neutral faces, tactile processing was facilitated by the peripheral compared to the central probe. This behavioural effect was accompanied by a reduction of the N1 mean amplitude elicited by the peripheral probe for fearful relative to neutral faces. Moreover, the faster the participants responded to tactile stimuli with the peripheral probe, relative to the central, the smaller was their N1. Together these results, suggest that fearful faces intruding into PPS may increase expectation of a visual event occurring in the periphery. In hearing individuals, vestibular and visuo-spatial functions seem to be functionally linked. Previous studies have suggested that congenitally deaf individuals are at a higher risk for vestibular problems, which in hearing adults have often been found to be associated with impairments in visuo-spatial processing. However, communicating in a sign language provides extensive practice in visuo-spatial processing, which might counteract negative effects of vestibular impairments. Here, we investigated whether the functional link between vestibular and visuo-spatial functions is mandatory, that is whether it is impenetrable to experience or context, or whether it is dependent on specific sensory and cognitive experiences. To this end, we tested a group of congenitally deaf native signers and a group of hearing nonsigners on mental rotation and balance tasks. Compared to hearing nonsigners, mental rotation was superior in the deaf signers in conditions crucial for sign language comprehension. By contrast, the balance performance of the group of deaf signers was impaired. While in the group of hearing nonsigners, balance skills correlated with mental rotation abilities, no such relationship was observed in the group of deaf signers. These results suggest that the link between vestibular and visuo-spatial functions is not fixed but can be altered or even cancelled out by certain sensory or cognitive experiences, such as the acquisition of a sign language., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) are a globally rising issue. It is necessary to detect such diseases early to find strategies for prevention. Typically, patients with MCI or AD show deviant neuronal patterns, which could be detected early through brain imaging techniques enabling assumptions about pre-existing diseases. Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) is an appropriate imaging method because of its easy and economical nature with hardly any drawbacks. An early measurable risk factor indicating neurodegenerative processes could be a deficit in visual-spatial processing, which is localized in the parietal cortex. In this study, we aimed to measure the hemodynamic response of the visual-spatial processing in the healthy elderly participants of our long-term Vogel Study with fNIRS during the clock-hand-angle-discrimination task (ADT) to deepen our understanding of healthy brain mechanisms. Our results revealed for our healthy sample a significantly increased neuronal brain activity with increasing task difficulties, namely from the long to the middle to the short clock hand during ADT and significantly higher activation in the right hemisphere compared to the left hemisphere as well as in the superior parietal cortex compared to the inferior parietal cortex. Additionally, our behavioral data demonstrated longer reaction times and more errors with an increasing task requirement. We, therefore, assume that visual-spatial processing can successfully be operationalized with fNIRS for healthy elderly people based on ADT. Previous studies have shown that arousal can influence hemispatial bias, suggesting that changes in arousal affect the neural networks involved in spatial attention control. The goal of the present study was to measure the effects of increased arousal on endogenous attentional orienting. We used a Spatial Orienting Paradigm to quantify attentional benefits and costs as measures of attentional orienting and re-orienting responses and exposed participants (N = 25; Experiment 1) to a bilateral feet Cold Pressor Test (CPT) to manipulate arousal. Increases in subjective distress ratings and blood pressure confirmed the effect of CPT on arousal. Although no overall effects of CPT on reaction times in the Spatial Orienting Paradigm were detected, an exploratory analysis of sex-specific effects revealed a left-lateralised decrease in benefits and increase in costs after CPT exposure in the male subsample (N = 11). To confirm these preliminary results, we repeated the experiment in a larger sample (N = 29, all male), but found no effect of CPT on orienting, with moderate to strong evidence in favour of a model excluding all (interaction) effects of CPT exposure (all BF Incl  < 0.3). Instead, our replicated results indicate that voluntary orienting is unaffected by CPT-induced increases of arousal. In the light of previous studies, and keeping in mind the interpretative challenges of null results, we discuss how and why our findings may be specific to endogenous as opposed to exogenous orienting and how arousal could possibly lead to the previously established effects on visuospatial bias without simultaneously affecting orienting and the underlying attention control networks., (Copyright © 2019 The Authors. Multitasking is ubiquitous in everyday life. It can have a detrimental effect on several cognitive abilities including spatial processing in both brain-damaged and healthy participants. The present study investigated, in healthy adults, the electrophysiological mechanisms associated with correct detection vs. misdetection of peripheral visual target(s) while processing concurrent visual or auditory stimuli. Correct responses were coupled with increased N1 amplitude under visual (i.e., intra-modal) load but not under auditory (i.e., cross-modal) load. Under visual load, error responses were associated to opposite patterns on N1/N2 components for unilateral and bilateral stimuli. In particular, errors were marked by significantly reduced N1 and N2 amplitude for the left and right visual field, respectively, whereas higher N1 amplitude was found for errors to bilateral targets. This suggests that early negative components represent the biological marker of target awareness under visual load, whereby correct target detection is grounded on a threshold criterion. These results provide an electrophysiological correlate for the allocation of capacity-limited cognitive resources during the concurrent processing of multiple and heterogeneous visual stimuli. • Multitasking affects behavioral and ERP visuo-spatial processing. • The automatic N1 component is modulated by visual attentional load. • Omission of visual targets is reflected in the modulation of N1 and N2 components. • A threshold criterion seems to be involved in visuo-spatial awareness. Introduction: Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB) is characterized by a prominent deficit in visuospatial abilities. Visuospatial impairment is also detectable in the course of Alzheimer's dementia (AD). However, visuospatial impairment presents some differences in these two conditions, suggesting pathological involvement of distinct brain circuits. Recent studies applied a new method to score the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) pentagon copy subtest, namely the Qualitative Scoring Pentagon Test (QSPT), which is a sensitive measure of visuospatial abilities. Using [ 18 F]fluorodeoxy-glucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET), we assessed the relationship between in vivo brain metabolic dysfunction and visuospatial deficits, in terms of QSPT total value, in DLB and AD., Materials and Methods: Sixty Patients were diagnosed as DLB (n = 35) and AD (n = 25) dementia according with the standard research diagnostic criteria. Each patient underwent a FDG-PET scan as support for the final diagnosis. Patients underwent an extended neuropsychological evaluation, including MMSE, language, memory, executive functions and visuospatial abilities tests. The MMSE QSPT scoring was calculated following the methods by Caffarra et al. (2013). Offline voxel-wise correlation analysis between QSPT total scores and FDG-PET brain metabolism was then performed, correcting for MMSE, sex and disease duration., Results: Both groups presented reduced visuospatial performances, as assessed by QSPT scores. DLB compared to AD showed a statistically significant difference in QSPT rotation parameter (p = 0.022). In DLB, worse performance at QSPT total score, i.e. more severe visuospatial impairment, correlated with brain occipital hypometabolism (i.e. lateral occipital cortex, calcarine cortex, fusiform and lingual gyri). In AD, worse performance at QSPT total score correlated with brain hypometabolism in the right parietal cortex (i.e. superior and inferior parietal cortex and angular gyrus)., Discussion: These findings reveal that visuospatial deficits may derive from distinct brain alterations in AD and DLB. We propose that the inabilities to perform correctly the QSPT task is related to altered visuoperceptual process in DLB, and visuospatial process in AD. In this paper, we examine brain lateralization patterns for a complex visual-spatial task commonly used to assess general spatial abilities. Although spatial abilities have classically been ascribed to the right hemisphere, evidence suggests that at least some tasks may be strongly bilateral. For example, while functional neuroimaging studies show right-lateralized activations for some spatial tasks (e.g., line bisection), bilateral activations are often reported for others, including classic spatial tasks such as mental rotation. Moreover, constructive apraxia has been reported following left- as well as right-hemisphere damage in adults, suggesting a role for the left hemisphere in spatial function. Here, we use functional neuroimaging to probe lateralization while healthy adults carry out a simplified visual-spatial construction task, in which they judge whether two geometric puzzle pieces can be combined to form a square. The task evokes strong bilateral activations, predominantly in parietal and lateral occipital cortex. Bilaterality was observed at the single-subject as well as at the group level, and regardless of whether specific items required mental rotation. We speculate that complex visual-spatial tasks may generally engage more bilateral activation of the brain than previously thought, and we discuss implications for understanding hemispheric specialization for spatial functions., (Copyright © 2017 The Authors. Eyetracking technology has had limited application in the dementia field to date, with most studies attempting to discriminate syndrome subgroups on the basis of basic oculomotor functions rather than higher-order cognitive abilities. Eyetracking-based tasks may also offer opportunities to reduce or ameliorate problems associated with standard paper-and-pencil cognitive tests such as the complexity and linguistic demands of verbal test instructions, and the problems of tiredness and attention associated with lengthy tasks that generate few data points at a slow rate. In the present paper we adapted the Brixton spatial anticipation test to a computerized instruction-less version where oculomotor metrics, rather than overt verbal responses, were taken into account as indicators of high level cognitive functions. Twelve bvFTD (in whom spatial anticipation deficits were expected), six SD patients (in whom deficits were predicted to be less frequent) and 38 healthy controls were presented with a 10 × 7 matrix of white circles. During each trial (N = 24) a black dot moved across seven positions on the screen, following 12 different patterns. Participants' eye movements were recorded. Frequentist statistical analysis of standard eye movement metrics were complemented by a Bayesian machine learning (ML) approach in which raw eyetracking time series datasets were examined to explore the ability to discriminate diagnostic group performance not only on the overall performance but also on individual trials. The original pen and paper Brixton test identified a spatial anticipation deficit in 7/12 (58%) of bvFTD and in 2/6 (33%) of SD patients. The eyetracking frequentist approach reported the deficit in 11/12 (92%) of bvFTD and in none (0%) of the SD patients. The machine learning approach had the main advantage of identifying significant differences from controls in 24/24 individual trials for bvFTD patients and in only 12/24 for SD patients. Results indicate that the fine grained rich datasets obtained from eyetracking metrics can inform us about high level cognitive functions in dementia, such as spatial anticipation. The ML approach can help identify conditions where subtle deficits are present and, potentially, contribute to test optimisation and the reduction of testing times. Functional motor disorder (FMD), also called psychogenic motor disorder or conversion disorder, describes impairments of motor function where there is no evidence of organic disease. The diagnosis is usually confirmed by positive clinical signs, such as Hoover's sign, in which normal power returns when attention is diverted away from the affected limb. This suggests that selective attention is an important determinant of these functional symptoms. The present study is the first specifically to explore the shifting of spatial attention in relation to the side of FMD. We tested 14 patients with unilateral functional upper limb weakness on three tasks requiring detection of visual targets close to the affected or unaffected hand, or touches to the hand itself. Targets were preceded by central cues promoting voluntary shifts of attention, or peripheral cues promoting automatic shifts. We observed a reduced response to visual and/or tactile targets on the affected side in around half of the patients, by comparison with age-matched controls, indicating that some degree of detection cost often accompanies FMD. Additionally, although the patient group showed normal cueing effects on the visual tasks, they had a unilateral absence of cueing effect on the affected side in the tactile task. Consideration of the data in the context of recent theory suggests that the abnormality may be not in the shifting of attention itself, but rather in the consequences of attending to the affected side. Specifically, the expected cueing effects may be absent on the affected side, because attention to a functionally weak limb increases the perception of the symptom, including any reduced sensory response. The influence of visuo-spatial skills on numerical magnitude processing is the subject of a long-standing debate. As most of the numerical and non-numerical magnitude abilities underpinning mathematical development are visual by nature, they are often assessed in the visual modality, thereby confusing visuo-spatial and numerical processing. In order to assess the influence of visuo-spatial processing on numerical magnitude representation, we examined magnitude processing in patients with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS), a genetic condition characterized by a cognitive profile with a relative weakness in visuo-spatial abilities but with preserved verbal abilities. Twenty-seven participants with 22q11DS were compared to two control groups (one matched on verbal intelligence and the other on visuo-spatial abilities) on several magnitude comparison tasks each with different visuo-spatial processing requirements. Our results showed that participants with 22q11DS present a consistent pattern of impairment in magnitude comparison tasks requiring the processing of visuo-spatial dimensions: comparison of lengths and collections. In contrast, their performance did not differ from the control groups in a visual task with no spatial processing requirement (i.e. numerical comparison of flashed dot sequences) or in auditory tasks (i.e., duration comparison and numerical comparison of sound sequences). Finally, a specific deficit of enumeration processes was observed in the subitizing range. Taken together, these results show that deficits in magnitude can occur as a consequence of a visuo-spatial deficit. Spontaneous eye movements during imagery are not random and can be used to study and reveal mental visualization processes (Fourtassi et al., 2013; Johansson et al. 2006). For example, we previously showed that during memory recall of French towns via imagery healthy individuals looks straight ahead when recalling Paris and their subsequent gaze positions are significantly correlated with the real GPS coordinates of the recalled towns. This correlation suggests that memory retrieval is done via depictive representations as it is never found when the towns are recalled using verbal fluency. In the present paper we added to this finding by showing that the mental image is spontaneously centered on the head or body midline. In order to investigate the capacities of visual imagery in patients, and by extension, the role of primary visual cortex and fronto-parietal cortex in spatial visual imagery, we recorded gaze positions during memory recall of French towns in an imagery task, a non-imagery task (verbal fluency), and a visually-guided task in five patients with left or right hemianopia and in four patients with hemineglect (two with left hemianopia and two without). The correlation between gaze position and real GPS coordinates of the recalled towns was significant in all hemianopic patients, but in patients with hemineglect this was only the case for towns located on the right half of the map of France. This suggests hemianopic patients can perform spatially consistent mental imagery despite direct or indirect unilateral lesions of the primary visual cortex. In contrast, the left-sided towns recalled by hemineglect patients, revealed that they have some spatial inconsistency or representational difficulty. Hemianopic patients positioned and maintained their gaze in their contralesional hemispace, suggesting that their mental map was not centered on their head or body midline. This contralesional gaze positioning appeared to be a general compensation strategy and was not observed in patients with neglect (with or without hemianopia). Instead, neglect patients positioned their gaze in their ipsilesional hemispace and only when performing the visual imagery task. These findings are discussed in the context of the role of occipital and fronto-parietal cortices in the neuroanatomical model of visual imagery developed by Kosslyn et al. Spatial localization of touch is critically dependent upon coordinate transformation between different reference frames, which must ultimately allow for alignment between somatotopic and external representations of space. Although prior work has shown an important role for cues such as body posture in influencing the spatial localization of touch, the relative contributions of the different sensory systems to this process are unknown. In the current study, we had participants perform a tactile temporal order judgment (TOJ) under different body postures and conditions of sensory deprivation. Specifically, participants performed non-speeded judgments about the order of two tactile stimuli presented in rapid succession on their ankles during conditions in which their legs were either uncrossed or crossed (and thus bringing somatotopic and external reference frames into conflict). These judgments were made in the absence of 1) visual, 2) auditory, or 3) combined audio-visual spatial information by blindfolding and/or placing participants in an anechoic chamber. As expected, results revealed that tactile temporal acuity was poorer under crossed than uncrossed leg postures. Intriguingly, results also revealed that auditory and audio-visual deprivation exacerbated the difference in tactile temporal acuity between uncrossed to crossed leg postures, an effect not seen for visual-only deprivation. Furthermore, the effects under combined audio-visual deprivation were greater than those seen for auditory deprivation. Collectively, these results indicate that mechanisms governing the alignment between somatotopic and external reference frames extend beyond those imposed by body posture to include spatial features conveyed by the auditory and visual modalities - with a heavier weighting of auditory than visual spatial information. Healthy adults bisect visual horizontal lines slightly to the left of their true center. This bias has been termed "pseudoneglect" and is considered to reflect right hemisphere dominance in the orienting of spatial attention. A previous investigation reported a positive correlation between pseudoneglect and a corresponding negative bias towards numbers lower than the true midpoint, i.e. supposedly to the left of the midpoint, during the mental bisection of number intervals that were defined by two visual arabic digits presented one to the left and one to the right of a horizontal line (Longo and Lourenco, 2007, Neuropsychologia, 45, 7, 1400-1407). Here, studying a sample of 60 healthy participants we verified whether this correlation still holds when the endpoints of number intervals are defined verbally, i.e. with no visual-spatial cues suggesting their left-to-right arrangement. Participants bisected horizontal lines (2 cm, 10 cm and 20 cm), short number intervals (3-, 5-, 7- and 9-unit) and large number intervals (16-, 24-, 32-, 40-, 48-, 56-, and 64-unit). Pseudoneglect was observed both in line and number interval bisection, confirming the results of Longo and Lourenco (2007). Nonetheless, the study of correlations between bisection biases averaged across different line and number intervals lengths and between all possible pairings of line and number interval lengths revealed no significant or systematic pattern. During line bisection pseudoneglect increased as a function of line length while with short number intervals pseudoneglect decreased and turned into an opposite positive bias as a function of interval length. With large number intervals no linear relationship was present between bisection bias and interval length and, as in Longo and Lourenco (2007), the higher was the starting point of the number interval the larger was pseudoneglect. These results show that verbally defined number intervals are not mentally inspected with the same mechanisms that are engaged by the bisection of horizontal visual lines. This suggests that number intervals are not inherently arranged along the mental equivalent of a left-to-right oriented horizontal line. This spatial representation seems rather adopted when, as in the case of the SNARC task, "left" vs. "right" codes must be used for the selection of responses associated with numbers or when, as in the case of Longo and Lourenco (2007), the numerical material to be processed is arranged in left-to-right order., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Echolocation is the extraordinary ability to represent the external environment by using reflected sound waves from self-generated auditory pulses. Blind human expert echolocators show extremely precise spatial acuity and high accuracy in determining the shape and motion of objects by using echoes. In the current study, we investigated whether or not the use of echolocation would improve the representation of auditory space, which is severely compromised in congenitally blind individuals (Gori et al., 2014). The performance of three blind expert echolocators was compared to that of 6 blind non-echolocators and 11 sighted participants. Two tasks were performed: (1) a space bisection task in which participants judged whether the second of a sequence of three sounds was closer in space to the first or the third sound and (2) a minimum audible angle task in which participants reported which of two sounds presented successively was located more to the right. The blind non-echolocating group showed a severe impairment only in the space bisection task compared to the sighted group. Remarkably, the three blind expert echolocators performed both spatial tasks with similar or even better precision and accuracy than the sighted group.
