To identify the determinants of disability among individuals living with schizophrenia attending the psychiatric follow-up clinic at Jimma Medical Center (JMC). Methods: An institution-based unmatched case-control study was conducted among 98 Cases and 98 controls of individuals living with schizophrenia attending the JMC psychiatric clinic from September 1 to October 30, 2022. Consecutive sampling technique was used to recruit the required sample size of both groups. The cases group were participants who scored > 12 total on the WHO Disability Assessment Scale version 2– 0 (WHODAS 2– 0) whereas the control group were those who scored 12 total on the WHODAS 2– 0. Results: Being jobless (AOR = 2.29; 95% CI: 1.10– 4.77), longer than 5-year duration of illness without treatment (AOR = 3.13; 95% CI: 1.23– 7.98), poor social support (AOR = 2.54; 95% CI: 1.04– 6.22), negative symptoms (AOR = 2.45; 95% CI: 1.14– 5.29), known family history of mental illness (AOR = 3.59; 95%: 1.67– 7.73) and risky khat use (AOR = 4.37; 95% CI: 1.86– 10.29) were found to be determinants of disability among schizophrenia patients. Conclusion: Joblessness, longer than 5-year duration of illness without treatment, poor social support, negative symptoms, known family history of mental illness and risky khat use were found to be determinants of disability in schizophrenia patients. Interventions targeting reducing of disability and improving quality of life of schizophrenia patients should consider the aforementioned determinants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Epilepsy is a brain disease that is associated with electrocardiographic (ECG) abnormalities. However, this evidence is limited in Ethiopia. Studying ECG abnormality in epileptic patients could help minimize the cardiac problems and death of epileptic patients by early screening. This study was aimed to assess electrocardiogram abnormalities and associated factors among people with and without epilepsy at referral hospitals in Amhara Regional State (ARS), northern Ethiopia, 2022. Methods: Institutional-based comparative cross-sectional study was conducted from April 20 to June 20, 2022. Three referral hospitals in ARS were selected by simple random sampling. Epileptic patients were selected by systematic random sampling, and 403 age- and sex-matched participants were selected from attendants of patients in the outpatient department. Interviewer-administered questionnaire and digital electrocardiograph were used for data collection. Data were entered to EpiData version 4.6 and exported to stata version  14 for analysis. Variables with P value < 0.25 in bivariable analysis were entered to multivariable binary logistic regression. Strength of association was determined by adjusted odds ratio with a 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: The prevalence of ECG abnormality was 40.0% (95% CI = 34.7– 46.8) and 29.0% (95% CI =  23.2– 34.3) in epileptic and non-epileptic subjects, respectively. The odds of ECG abnormality was 58% higher among epileptic patients. Divorce, duration of epilepsy, uncontrolled epilepsy, former/current smoker, adequate physical activity, hypertension, and overweight/obesity were associated with ECG abnormality among epileptic patients. Conclusion and Recommendations: The proportion of ECG abnormality was higher among the epileptic than the non-epileptic group. This should be a wake-up call for stakeholders to establish appropriate measurements to reduce cardiac issues of epileptic patients. Background: Depression among tuberculosis patients remains a significant public health concern. Its burden and severity is increasing in low-income countries, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. Although it has negative impacts on quality of life, depression among tuberculosis patients is rarely studied in Ethiopia, particularly in the study area. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the magnitude of depression and associated factors among tuberculosis patients in Eastern Ethiopia. Methods: A facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted from April 15 to May 15, 2021, among 213 tuberculosis patients in public health facilities of the Harari Regional State, Eastern Ethiopia. Study participants were selected using a systematic sampling technique. Data were collected using interviewer-administered questionnaire. Depression was assessed using Patients Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Epi-data and SPSS were used for data processing and analysis. Bi-variable and multivariable logistic regressions were employed to determine the effects of predictors on depression. Statistical significance was considered at a p-value < 0.05. Results: The magnitude of depression among tuberculosis patients was 52.1% [95% CI (45.4, 58.8%)]. Patient's age of 25– 34 years [AOR = 0.31, 95% CI (0.128, 0.75)], female sex [AOR = 5.04; 95% CI (2.18, 11.62)], intensive phase of tuberculosis treatment [AOR = 2.56; 95% CI (1.118, 5.876)], HIV-positive status [AOR = 7.143; 95% CI (1.55, 32.93)], smoking history [AOR = 9.08; 95% CI (3.35, 24.61)] and having poor social support [AOR = 4.13; 95% CI (1.29, 13.22)] were factors statistically associated with depression. Conclusion: In this study, the magnitude of depression was relatively high as more than half of the participants had depression. Advanced age, female sex, intensive phase of tuberculosis treatment, HIV-positive status, smoking history, and poor social support were identified as associated factors with depression. Therefore, this result calls all stakeholders to give duly emphasis on incorporating and integrating mental health support programs as routine practice in tuberculosis follow-up clinics, as screening, early detection and treatment, and training for all health care providers are very crucial in tackling depression among tuberculosis patients. Background: Problematic khat use is an emerging health problem worldwide. Trauma experience, crime, and substance misuse is closely related. However, there is lack of evidence whether post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and life time trauma exposure has a relationship with problematic khat use among prisoners in our country Ethiopia, or elsewhere. Therefore, this study assessed the relationship between PTSD and life time trauma exposure with khat use disorder among newly admitted prisoners in Bench Shako and West Omo zone correctional institution, Mizan Aman, Ethiopia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 411 (N=422) prisoners from April 20 to July 19, 2019, by using a consecutive sampling technique. Trauma exposure and post-traumatic stress disorder were assessed with a life event check list and Post-traumatic stress disorder – civilian version (PCL-C), respectively. The WHO ASSIST tool was used to assess khat, alcohol, and tobacco use disorder. Antisocial personality disorder, criminal, and clinical history were also assessed. The data were entered into Epi-data version 3.1 and then exported to Statistical Package for Social Science version 21. A logistic regression model was used and variables with a p-value less than 0.05 in the final fitting model were stated as independent predictors of PTSD. Results: Nearly one out of four prisoners exposed to life time trauma exposure developed PTSD, and the prevalence of khat use disorder among prisoners with life time trauma exposure and PTSD was 45% and 85%, respectively. Prisoners with khat use disorder had more than 5 times higher odds of association with PTSD than their counterparts (AOR=5.3, 95% CI=2.4– 11.8). In addition, antisocial personality disorder (AOR=2.8, 95% CI=1.6– 5.5), criminal recidivism (AOR=2.5, 95% CI=1.5– 4.3), and being a driver (AOR=2, 95% CI=1.2– 3.3) were positively associated with PTSD. Conclusion: Khat use disorder was higher among prisoners with life time trauma exposure and PTSD, and khat use disorder was positively associated with PTSD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Ethiopia has seen the largest number of conflict-induced displacement. Mental disturbance has been identified as a major public health concern among conflict-affected people, including students. Due to the effect of continuous unfold of the COVID-19 epidemic in the conflicted affected setting, the mental health problem tends to be increased. This creates a double burden for students from conflict affected setting after school re-opening. As a result, the goal of this research was to evaluate the mental health impact and its correlates in students from conflict affected setting, Ethiopia. Objective: To assess the association of conflict-affected environment on Ethiopian students' mental health and its correlates during COVID-19 era. Methods: From April 1 to 30, 2021, an institutional-based cross-sectional survey was undertaken. A total sample of 795 students were participated through a systematic random sampling technique. The Kessler Psychological Distress Scale was used to assess mental distress (K10). The correlation between outcome and explanatory variables was investigated using bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses. Results: A total of 795 people were examined, with a 100% response rate. Mental distress was reported about 59.4% with a 95% CI of 57% to 62.9%. Conflicted related sexual abuse (AOR = 4.1, 95% CI 2.37 to 6.94), witnessed shooting (AOR = 3.49, 95% CI 2.7 to 5.89), threat to security and safety (AOR = 2.23, 95% CI 1.29 to 3.87), being female (AOR = 3.01, 95% CI 1.61 to 5.44), and poor academic performance (AOR = 2.1, 95% CI 1.08 to 4.08) were found to be substantially correlated. Conclusion: Students from conflict-affected areas are at high risk of mental distress. Therefore, the ministry of health, ministry of education of Ethiopia and humanitarian organizations should work collaboratively in providing consistent school-based psychosocial support and appropriate intervention for students.
