The present study used magnetoencephalography (MEG) to identify the neural correlates of audiovisual statistical learning, while disentangling the differential contributions of uni- and multi-modal statistical mismatch responses in humans. The applied paradigm was based on a combination of a statistical learning paradigm and a multisensory oddball one, combining an audiovisual, an auditory and a visual stimulation stream, along with the corresponding deviances. Plasticity effects due to musical expertise were investigated by comparing the behavioral and MEG responses of musicians to non-musicians. The behavioral results indicated that the learning was successful for both musicians and non-musicians. The unimodal MEG responses are consistent with previous studies, revealing the contribution of Heschl's gyrus for the identification of auditory statistical mismatches and the contribution of medial temporal and visual association areas for the visual modality. The cortical network underlying audiovisual statistical learning was found to be partly common and partly distinct from the corresponding unimodal networks, comprising right temporal and left inferior frontal sources. Musicians showed enhanced activation in superior temporal and superior frontal gyrus. Connectivity and information processing flow amongst the sources comprising the cortical network of audiovisual statistical learning, as estimated by transfer entropy, was reorganized in musicians, indicating enhanced top-down processing. This neuroplastic effect showed a cross-modal stability between the auditory and audiovisual modalities.

We propose a new measure, horizontal visibility graph transfer entropy (HVG-TE), to estimate the direction of information flow between pairs of time series. HVG-TE quantifies the transfer entropy between the degree sequences of horizontal visibility graphs derived from original time series. Twenty-one Rössler attractors unidirectionally coupled in the posterior-to-anterior direction were used to simulate 21-channel Electroencephalography (EEG) brain networks and validate the performance of the HVG-TE. We showed that the HVG-TE is robust to different levels of coupling strengths between the coupled Rössler attractors, a wide range of time delays, different sample sizes, the effects of noise and linear mixing, and the choice of reference for EEG data. We also applied HVG-TE to EEG data in 20 healthy controls and compared its performance to a recently introduces phase-based TE measure (PTE). We found that compared with PTE, HVG-TE consistently detected stronger posterior-to-anterior information flow patterns in the alpha-band (8–13 Hz) EEG brain networks for three different references. Moreover, in contrast to PTE, HVG-TE does not require an assumption on the periodicity of input signals, therefore it can be more widely applicable, even for non-periodic signals. This study shows that the HVG-TE is a directed connectivity measure to characterise the direction of information flow in large-scale brain networks.

Several recent studies have reported a frequency-dependent directional information flow loop in resting-state networks by phase transfer entropy, comprising an anterior-to-posterior information flow in the theta band and a posterior-to-anterior information flow in the alpha band. However, the functional roles of this information flow loop remain unclear. In the current study, we compared information flow patterns in four different brain states using electroencephalography: resting-state, fixation, working memory (WM) encoding and WM maintenance. An auditory (pure tones) WM span task was carried out. A consistent anterior-to-posterior information flow in the theta band and an opposite pattern in the alpha band were found in all four segments. Flows in both patterns were enhanced during WM encoding. In contrast, a prefrontal-to-central information flow in the alpha band was dominant during the resting-state. In addition, enhanced information flows from right temporal to other brain regions in the theta band were found during WM processing (WM encoding and maintenance). Comparison of the consistency and dynamical changes of information flows in these four brain states indicated their functional roles in central executive processes, internal attention, WM information maintenance, and the right-hemisphere advantage in pure tone processing.

Exploring brain networks is an essential step towards understanding functional organization of the brain, which needs characterization of linear and nonlinear connections based on measurements like EEG or MEG. Conventional measures of connectivity are mostly linear and bivariate. This paper proposes an effective connectivity measure called Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System Granger Causality (ANFISGC). The proposed measure is based on the symplectic geometry embedding dimension, Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) predictor, and Granger Causality (GC). It is a powerful predictor that detects both linear and nonlinear causal information flow. It is not bivariate and thus can distinguish between direct and indirect connections. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated and compared with those of the Linear Granger Causality (LGC), Kernel Granger Causality (KGC), combination of Pairwise Granger Causality and Conditional Granger Causality (PwGC + CGC), Transfer Entropy (TE), and Phase Transfer Entropy (PTE) methods using simulated and experimental MEG data. Simulation results show that ANFISGC outperforms the other methods in detecting both linear and nonlinear connections and, by increasing the coupling strength between nodes, the value of ANFISGC increases. In the analysis of the time series of the brain sources of epilepsy patients obtained from the MEG inverse problem, the regions found by ANFISGC were more similar to the clinical findings than those found by the other methods.

The interplay between structural connections and emerging information flow in the human brain remains an open research problem. A recent study observed global patterns of directional information flow in empirical data using the measure of transfer entropy. For higher frequency bands, the overall direction of information flow was from posterior to anterior regions whereas an anterior-to-posterior pattern was observed in lower frequency bands. In this study, we applied a simple Susceptible-Infected-Susceptible (SIS) epidemic spreading model on the human connectome with the aim to reveal the topological properties of the structural network that give rise to these global patterns. We found that direct structural connections induced higher transfer entropy between two brain regions and that transfer entropy decreased with increasing distance between nodes (in terms of hops in the structural network). Applying the SIS model, we were able to confirm the empirically observed opposite information flow patterns and posterior hubs in the structural network seem to play a dominant role in the network dynamics. For small time scales, when these hubs acted as strong receivers of information, the global pattern of information flow was in the posterior-to-anterior direction and in the opposite direction when they were strong senders. Our analysis suggests that these global patterns of directional information flow are the result of an unequal spatial distribution of the structural degree between posterior and anterior regions and their directions seem to be linked to different time scales of the spreading process.

A vast repertoire of methods is currently available to study effective brain connectivity based on neuroimaging data, among which lag-based measures can be distinguished. Although several studies have previously assessed the performance of such measures, their validity in different conditions remains unclear. In the current study, several lag-based effective connectivity measures are tested and benchmarked using simulated fMRI data, conceived to reflect a broad range of different situations with practical interest. The main goal is two-fold: 1) to provide a thorough overview of lag-based effective connectivity measures, and 2) to assess their performance in specific experimental conditions, thereby providing guidance for future effective connectivity studies involving fMRI. We focus on well-known lag-based measures, cover existing improvements and alternative formulations in some cases: Granger causality (GC), Geweke's Granger causality (GGC), directed transfer function (DTF), partial directed coherence (PDC), phase slope index (PSI), and transfer entropy (TE). Benchmarking consists in identifying causal relations in local field potential (LFP) networks that have their output convolved with a canonical hemodynamic response function (HRF) with varying node number, topology, coupling strength, neuronal delay, repetition time (TR), signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and HRF variability. In a first set of simulations, we cover all possible combinations of discretized values of the previous variables, for networks with 2 and 3 nodes, and find that the measure with best performance (time-domain Granger Causality) is able to detect neuronal delays of a few hundreds of milliseconds with TRs between 0.25 and 2 s and neuronal delays below 100 ms for TRs that are also below 100 ms, with more than 80% accuracy in realistic conditions. For networks with more than 3 nodes, we find that the number of nodes and the density of causal links degrade sensitivity, especially if the number of observations does not compensate for the increase in nodes, and that clustered networks can be more easily identified. In conclusion, this study argues in favor of the applicability of lag-based measures in the context of fMRI, provided that a stringent set of experimental specifications is met and that the chosen measure is applied with full knowledge of its limitations and specific constraints.

This paper presents a data-driven pipeline for studying asymmetries in mutual interdependencies between distinct components of EEG signal. Due to volume conductance, estimating coherence between scalp electrodes may lead to spurious results. A group-based independent component analysis (ICA), which is conducted across all subjects and conditions simultaneously, is an alternative representation of the EEG measurements. Within this approach, the extracted components are independent in a global sense while short-lived or transient interdependencies may still be present between the components. In this paper, functional roles of the ICA components are specified through a partial least squares (PLS) analysis of task effects within the time course of the derived components. Functional integration is estimated within the information-theoretic approach using transfer entropy analysis based on asymmetries in mutual interdependencies of reconstructed phase dynamics. A secondary PLS analysis is performed to assess robust task-specific changes in transfer entropy estimates between functionally specific components.

A common issue in blood-related brain-function measurements, such as optical topography, is that the observed signals are usually corrupted with strong noise that is primarily spontaneous low-frequency oscillations (LFOs) in cerebral hemodynamics, which are difficult to separate from the signals due to functional brain activity because of their common spectral range. We discuss the analysis of information transfer between LFOs around 0.1 Hz in the hemoglobin concentration change (HbCC) in the cerebral cortex, the heart rate (HR), and the mean arterial blood pressure (ABP) to understand the origin of spontaneous LFOs in cerebral hemodynamics. As measures of information transfer, we used transfer entropy (TE) for two-variable system analysis and introduced intrinsic transfer entropy for further analysis of three-variable systems by extending the original TE. Data for analysis were obtained from simultaneous measurements with optical topography and infrared finger plethysmography under rest conditions. The analysis revealed that the LFOs in oxy HbCC, a parameter of cerebral hemodynamics, mainly stem from HR, but its contribution is only about 20%. In addition, the intrinsic contribution of ABP is about 5% and the common contribution of HR and ABP is about 10%. From these, HR and ABP cannot account for more than the half the information carried with variable oxy HbCC, which suggests the origin of LFOs in cerebral hemodynamics may lie in the regulation of regional cerebral blood flow change and energetic metabolism rather than due to the systemic regulation of the cardiovascular system.
