Abstract: A fuzzy inference system (FIS) architecture based on the Takagi–Sugeno–Kang (TSK) fuzzy model is developed for time series prediction. Our objective is to investigate and evaluate the proposed rule-based model against commonly used time series models including “standard” architectures such as autoregressive (AR) models and selected topologies of neural networks. The main architectural developments of the FIS involve fuzzy relational antecedents (viz., antecedents represented in the form of fuzzy relations) and recurrent neural networks forming the consequents of the rules. Fuzzy C-means (FCM) clustering is applied to the time series to determine the fuzzy relations for the antecedents of the rules. Experimental results are reported for single-time step prediction and multiple time step (p-step) prediction on several widely used time series. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This paper is concerned with a new architecture of a reinforced hybrid interval fuzzy neural networks (RHIFNN) classifier developed with aid of Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) clustering and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). The key objectives of this study concern the following: (a) selection of preprocessing techniques for the dimensionality reduction of input space. Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) or principal component analysis (PCA) algorithm forms a front end of the network to form the low-dimensional input variables. (b) The efficient process of dealing with uncertain information by interval type-2 fuzzy sets using Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) clustering. The premise (condition) part of the rules is realized by two FCM clustering algorithms, which are invoked by using different values of the fuzzification coefficient subsequently resulting in interval-valued type-2 membership functions. (c) The simultaneous structural and parametric optimization of network by evolutionary algorithm is completed. The parameters of the network including both the premise and consequent parts are optimized by means of the particle swarm optimization (PSO). In recent years, classical fuzzy clustering-based neural networks (FCNNs) have been successfully applied to regression tasks. The determination of the parameters such as cluster centers of the existing hard c-means (HCM) or fuzzy c-means (FCM), leads to the performance deterioration of the model because of the sensitivity of HCM or FCM to noise and outliers. Moreover, there are also several factors for over-fitting and degradation of the robustness of the ensuing model. To solve such problems, two improved clustering techniques and L 2 norm-regularization are considered in the proposed robust fuzzy clustering-based neural networks (RFCNNs) modeling. SVs-based hard c-means (SVs-based HCM) and SVs-based fuzzy c-means (SVs-based FCM) designed with support vectors (SVs) can reduce the interference of uncorrelated data, including noise and outliers, thereby enhancing the main data characteristics effectively, as well as leading to the construction on the improved network model. L 2 norm-regularization can be used to alleviate the degradation of robustness caused by overfitting. In terms of improving the performance of the model through SVs-based HCM or SVs-based FCM, as well as robustness completed through L 2 norm-regularization, the superiority of RFCNNs was verified by experimenting with synthetic data and publicly available data from machine learning datasets. Abstract: Several fuzzy c-means based clustering techniques have been developed to tackle many problems in a number of areas such as pattern recognition, image analysis, communication, data mining. Among all, a common use of such a class of clustering algorithms is in the training of radial basis function neural networks (RBFNNs). In this paper, we describe a novel approach to fuzzy clustering, which organizes the data in clusters on the basis of the input data and a ‘prototype’ regression function built, in the output space, as a summation of a number of linear local regression models. This methodology is shown to be effective in the training of RBFNNs leading to improved performance with respect to other clustering algorithms. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
