In linear registration, a floating image is spatially aligned with a reference image after performing a series of linear metric transformations. Additionally, linear registration is mainly considered a preprocessing version of nonrigid registration. To better accomplish the task of finding the optimal transformation in pairwise intensity-based medical image registration, in this work, we present an optimization algorithm called the normal vibration distribution search-based differential evolution algorithm (NVSA), which is modified from the Bernstein search-based differential evolution (BSD) algorithm. We redesign the search pattern of the BSD algorithm and import several control parameters as part of the fine-tuning process to reduce the difficulty of the algorithm. In this study, 23 classic optimization functions and 16 real-world patients (resulting in 41 multimodal registration scenarios) are used in experiments performed to statistically investigate the problem solving ability of the NVSA. Nine metaheuristic algorithms are used in the conducted experiments. When compared to the commonly utilized registration methods, such as ANTS, Elastix, and FSL, our method achieves better registration performance on the RIRE dataset. Moreover, we prove that our method can perform well with or without its initial spatial transformation in terms of different evaluation indicators, demonstrating its versatility and robustness for various clinical needs and applications. This study establishes the idea that metaheuristic-based methods can better accomplish linear registration tasks than the frequently used approaches; the proposed method demonstrates promise that it can solve real-world clinical and service problems encountered during nonrigid registration as a preprocessing approach.The source code of the NVSA is publicly available at https://github.com/PengGui-N/NVSA. Feature selection (FS) is considered as one of the core concepts in the areas of machine learning and data mining which immensely impacts the performance of classification model. Through FS, irrelevant or partially relevant features can be eliminated which in turn helps in enhancing the performance of the model. Over the years, researchers have applied different meta-heuristic optimization techniques for the purpose of FS as these overcome the limitations of traditional optimization approaches. Going by the trend, we introduce a new FS approach based on a recently proposed meta-heuristic algorithm called Manta ray foraging optimization (MRFO) which is developed following the food foraging nature of the Manta rays, one of the largest known marine creatures. As MRFO is apposite for continuous search space problems, we have adapted a binary version of MRFO to fit it into the problem of FS by applying eight different transfer functions belonging to two different families: S-shaped and V-shaped. We have evaluated the eight binary versions of MRFO on 18 standard UCI datasets. Of these, the best one is considered for comparison with 16 recently proposed meta-heuristic FS approaches. The results show that MRFO outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in terms of both classification accuracy and number of features selected. Recently, several metaheuristic optimization approaches have been developed for solving many complex problems in various areas. Most of these optimization algorithms are inspired by nature or the social behavior of some animals. However, there is no optimization algorithm which has been inspired by a game. In this paper, a novel metaheuristic optimization algorithm, named BRO (battle royale optimization), is proposed. The proposed method is inspired by a genre of digital games knowns as "battle royale." BRO is a population-based algorithm in which each individual is represented by a soldier/player that would like to move toward the safest (best) place and ultimately survive. The proposed scheme has been compared with the well-known PSO algorithm and six recent proposed optimization algorithms on nineteen benchmark optimization functions. Moreover, to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm on real-world engineering problems, the inverse kinematics problem of the 6-DOF PUMA 560 robot arm is considered. It is obvious from wider spectrum of successful applications that metaheuristic algorithms are potential solutions to hard optimization problems. Among such algorithms are swarm-based methods like particle swarm optimization and ant colony optimization which are increasingly attracting new researchers. Despite popularity, the core questions on performance issues are still partially answered due to limited insightful analyses. Mere investigation and comparison of end results may not reveal the reasons behind poor or better performance. This study, therefore, performed in-depth empirical analysis by quantitatively analyzing exploration and exploitation of five swarm-based metaheuristic algorithms. The analysis unearthed explanations the way algorithms performed on numerical problems as well as on real-world application of classification using adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) trained by selected metaheuristics. The outcome of empirical study suggested that coherence and consistency in the swarm individuals throughout iterations is the key to success in swarm-based metaheuristic algorithms. The analytical approach adopted in this study may be employed to perform component-wise diversity analysis so that the contribution of each component on performance may be determined for devising efficient search strategies. The performance of any algorithm will largely depend on the setting of its algorithm-dependent parameters. The optimal setting should allow the algorithm to achieve the best performance for solving a range of optimization problems. However, such parameter tuning itself is a tough optimization problem. In this paper, we present a framework for self-tuning algorithms so that an algorithm to be tuned can be used to tune the algorithm itself. Using the firefly algorithm as an example, we show that this framework works well. It is also found that different parameters may have different sensitivities and thus require different degrees of tuning. Parameters with high sensitivities require fine-tuning to achieve optimality.
