Diabetic Retinopathy (DR), one of the most progressive sight-threatening diseases caused by the long-term diabetic condition, can lead to vision impairment and blindness later. Early diagnosis and timely treatment help control and avert DR from its progression. However, manual grading is exceptionally challenging and arduous due to the complex anatomical features in the retina. Therefore, developing an automated diagnostic method for screening DR is obligatory. This paper proposes a deep learning-enabled optimized feature selection approach to classify the stage of DR severity in the fundus image. At first, a pre-processing phase eradicates the noise and improves the contrast in the retinal fundus image. Then, blood vessel segmentation is performed using the Coherence Enhancing Energy Based Regularized Level Set Evolution method in the green channel fundus image. Subsequently, the optic disk is segmented with Canny Anisotropic Diffusion filter and morphological transformations. Next, the candidate lesion region is detected using an Attention-based Fusion Network (AFU-Net). Then, shape and texture features are extracted, and then, the optimal subset of features is selected using the Improved Harris Hawk Optimization algorithm. Finally, a deep Convolutional Neural Network classifies the DR stages, and the model weight is updated using the same algorithm. The proposed method achieved superior performance in two benchmark public datasets compared with the existing state-of-the-art methods using F1-score, accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity measures. Fingerprint pattern recognition and classification can be of assistance in the research on human personality. In some previous studies, fingerprints were classified into four categories to speed up recognition, but the method of that classification is not suitable for researching the diversity of human personalities. Therefore, in this paper, fingerprint patterns were classified into six types and the accuracy of the recognition was improved to facilitate the research on human personality characteristics. Based on this idea, a six-category fingerprint database is annotated manually and a convolutional neural network (CNN) is proposed for identifying real fingerprint patterns. The new CNN consists of four convolutional layers, three max-pooling layers, two norm layers, and three fully connected layers. The best accuracy the model achieved was 94.87% for a six-category fingerprint database and 92.9% accuracy for a four-category fingerprint database. The results of experimental tests show that the proposed model can recognize the pattern features from a large fingerprint database using the automatic learning and feature extraction abilities of the CNN to get a greater accuracy than in previous experiments. As the most direct media form in the Internet age, text information has received more and more attention in the era of the maturity of social networks and the rapid development of mobile terminals technology (general name). In this paper, the methods of removing invalid records, manually filling in vacancy values and using global constant to fill in vacancy values are used to preprocess semantic ontology. Then, the semantic ontology is further processed by using Chinese word segmentation to reduce the computational cost of later feature extraction and to increase the effectiveness of feature extraction. Using X2 statistic CHI(t , x) to extract the feature of ontology semantics, the high-dimensional data are mapped to low-dimensional space by transformation, which reduces the dimension of vector space and simplifies the calculation. Finally, using news data source and MATLAB software design platform to do classification experiment using convolutional neural network classification and from recall rate, correct rate and F-measure, three indicators to compare the classification effect of NB, KNN, SVM, the effectiveness of the experimental method is verified. Convolutional neural network is powerful for general object recognition. However, its excellent performance depends largely on huge training set. Facing task like military object recognition in which image samples for training are scarce, its performance will degrade sharply. To solve this problem, a deep transfer learning method is proposed in this paper. The main idea consists of two parts: transfer learning for prior knowledge embedding and mixed layer for better feature extraction. It has been proved that the ability of feature extraction learned in large dataset is helpful to related tasks and can be transferred to a new neural network. The transfer learning process is achieved by fixing the weights of some layers and then retraining the remained layers. The key problem for deep transfer learning is which part should be transferred and which part should be retrained to adapt the network to the new task. This problem is solved by extensive experiments, and it is found that retraining the last three layers and transferring prior to the other layers can reach the best performance. Besides, we used mixed layer scheme to make use of the current information. In each mixed layer, convolution filters in different scales are combined together, helping to adapt features in different scales. By employing these two methods, the proposed method exhibits a large improvement in military object recognition under small training set. Breast cancer is one of the most common female malignancies, as well as the second leading cause of mortality for women. Early detection and treatment can dramatically decrease the mortality rate. Recently, automated breast volume scanner (ABVS) has become one of the most frequently used diagnose methods for breast tumor screening because of its operator-independent and reproducible advantages. However, it is a challenging job to obtain the tumors' accurate locations and shapes by reviewing hundreds of ABVS slices. In this paper, a novel computer-aided detection (CADe) system is developed to reduce clinicians' reading time and improve the efficiency. The CADe system mainly contains three parts: tumor candidate acquisition, false-positive reduction and tumor segmentation. Firstly, a local phase-based approach is built to obtain breast tumor candidates for further recognition. Subsequently, a convolutional neural network (CNN) is applied to reduce false positives (FPs). The introduction of CNN can help to avoid complicated feature extraction as well as elevate the accuracy and efficiency. Finally, superpixel-based segmentation is used to outline the breast tumor. Here, superpixel-based local binary pattern (SLBP) is proposed to assist the segmentation, which improves the performance. The methods were evaluated on a clinical ABVS dataset whose abnormal cases were manually labeled by an experienced radiologist. The experiment results were mainly composed of two parts. At the FP reduction stage, the proposed CNN achieved 100% and 78.12% sensitivity with FPs/case of 2.16 and 0. At the segmentation stage, our SLBP obtained 82.34% true positive, 15.79% false positive and 83.59% Dice similarity. This paper presents a learning mechanism based on hybridization of static and dynamic learning. Realizing the detection performances offered by the state-of-the-art deep learning techniques and the competitive performances offered by the conventional static learning techniques, we propose the idea of exploitation of the concatenated (parallel) hybridization of the static and dynamic learning-based feature spaces. This is contrary to the cascaded (series) hybridization topology in which the initial feature space (provided by the conventional, static, and handcrafted feature extraction technique) is explored using deep, dynamic, and automated learning technique. Consequently, the characteristics already suppressed by the conventional representation cannot be explored by the dynamic learning technique. Instead, the proposed technique combines the conventional static and deep dynamic representation in concatenated (parallel) topology to generate an information-rich hybrid feature space. Thus, this hybrid feature space may aggregate the good characteristics of both conventional and deep representations, which are then explored using an appropriate classification technique. We also hypothesize that ensemble classification may better exploit this parallel hybrid perspective of the feature spaces. For this purpose, pyramid histogram of oriented gradients-based static learning has been incorporated in conjunction with convolution neural network-based deep learning to produce concatenated hybrid feature space. This hybrid space is then explored with various state-of-the-art ensemble classification techniques. We have considered the publicly available INRIA person and Caltech pedestrian standard image datasets to assess the performance of the proposed hybrid learning system. Furthermore, McNemar's test has been used to statistically validate the outperformance of the proposed technique over various contemporary techniques. The validated experimental results show that the employment of the proposed hybrid representation results in effective detection performance (an AUC of 0.9996 for INRIA person and 0.9985 for Caltech pedestrian datasets) as compared to the individual static and dynamic representations. In this paper, an architecture based on memristors is proposed to implement image convolution computation in convolutional neural networks. This architecture could extract different features of input images when using different convolutional kernels. Bipolar memristors with threshold are employed in this work, which vary their conductance values under different voltages. Various kernels are needed to extract information of input images, while different kernels contain different weights. The memristances of bipolar memristors with threshold are convenient to be varied and kept, which make them suitable to act as the weights of kernels. Electroencephalogram (EEG) is widely used to monitor the brain activities. The manual examination of these signals by experts is strenuous and time consuming. Hence, machine learning techniques can be used to improve the accuracy of detection. Nowadays, deep learning methodologies have been used in medical field to diagnose the health conditions precisely and aid the clinicians. In this study, a new deep one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D CNN) model is proposed for the automatic recognition of normal and abnormal EEG signals. The proposed model is a complete end-to-end structure which classifies the EEG signals without requiring any feature extraction. In this study, we have used the EEG signals from temporal to occipital (T5–O1) single channel obtained from Temple University Hospital EEG Abnormal Corpus (v2.0.0) EEG dataset to develop the 1D CNN model.
